It is kind of true though, that the modders have made more for the game than his own people have. And the game is artist light, it is quite easy to mass produce a lot of art for it and introduce new things. Also the Creative mode is something I still very much so miss. I got bored having to first spend hours before I can finally get creative. It is like having to take your bike to some distant toy shop and cycle for 4 hours every time you want to play with your legos.

He also sold a lot of copies while it was in alpha, and if you sell an alpha product you kind of make a promise to people that there are going to be a lot of updates in the future. It is still alpha after all, so that means a lot more is to follow. That is the downside of this whole "fund my under development game" approach, people get expectations, and people get a sense that because they funded development, which is what they essentially did, they can demand and expect things to happen. It is also a bit of buying a cat in a bag. You don't really know what you are actually buying since the product is still evolving, further adding to the frustration. If you buy a finished game you know what you are getting. It is pretty much like giving a presentation. If you present some game concept and you only show an actual demo of the game all the way at the end of your presentation, people are going to be disappointed. Because by the time you got to the end of your presentation, they will have already developed their own view of the product, and your vision is never going to fit the version they've constructed in their own imagination. You really can't win that fight.

I wonder if that announced release date thing means retail release? Because I kinda see Minecraft doing absolutely horrible on store shelves, it's not the kind of game that can be sold on a game box. It's success has come from word of mouth and shared videos and stories.

I created a new level, spawned right above a dungeon and found this lil guy locked in a cage. Is this normal behavior for dungeons?

Monster spawners have a little version of the monster they spawn inside of them, so you can identify them without waiting around for stuff to spawn. Had that spawner not been out in broad daylight (wait for nightfall), it would start shitting out zombies.

There is so much potential with this thing. Obviously the current survival mode is most "game" of this...game...since it has inherent tension in it due to the day/night cycle combined with monsters and then of course the discovery element of the procedurally generated worlds. I know Notch has a planned Adventure mode which isn't supposed to allow for world modification...which in itself I think is a good additional mode to have...but I'd also like to see some kind of other mode using procedurally generated worlds that is exactly like survival mode except there is a pre-defined story or something. In other words, I think it would be fun to have say...um... a big prebuilt castle with walls of ...obsidian...or something that would require time/effort to gather materials/tools/geniusly-crafted-mechanisms-like-a-catapult-or-something-else-new-whatever to penetrate. Inside you have to do certain objectives like rescue the princess, kill the evil boss, free the slaves or possibly non-cliched video game objectives.

After playing a lot of the survival mode I think some players get a little sick of exploring and building. Having a meta objective thrown on top of that could be an interesting additional mode and attract a new audience not typically interested in pure sandbox play.

    Just an idea

You can download "Adventure" maps already. They're set up in an external map editor, with custom textures for signs and shit, and you just have to play by the rules and not break anything unless you're told to. I played through these two:

    And really loved the experience.

I don't know how I ended up watching this (I do really), but: http://d.hatena.ne.jp/video/niconico/sm14480092

Might take a while to start, though I imagine it'll be on youtube soon under IKA-TEN.
