Aliens vs Predator

So guys I finally did the right thing and went and bought AvP... classic 2000. Again. HA. This kicks the shit out of AvP3. Rebellion truly lost all sense of greatness after AvP1.

"The first two AVP games were deeply divisive for their time. People either liked them or *hated* them, and reviews for both games tended to encompass both end of the spectrums. Ironically, some of the complaints were even the same--I remember people bitching about how weird the Aliens move, about how 'weak' the Marine felt, how overpowered the Predator seemed to be. In the shadow of games like Counterstrike, various iterations of Quake, and everything else, AvP had a niche.
...So why is anyone surprised that the new AVP is largely the same way? I think nostalgia's getting a hold of people here. AvP 1 was a dark and muddy game for its time. AvP was kind of ugly even for its time. They were however, intensely satsifying to people who were big into it. It more or less captured the imagination of the people who loved the films. Nobody gave a rats ass that the story was crap--the story was crap in all three games. You can not make AvP NOT have a crap story because the basic premise is completely insipid. It has to be SOME variation of "Some humans come onto a planet where the are aliens and stick around because they are stupid, and Predators hunt them). You were expecting more? Why?.
The gameplay isn't really screwy, obtuse, and possibly screwed up balance wise? Guess you haven't played the other two games. Balance issues were raged on all sides in both iterations. "Grenade spam" and "Predator's who use anything other than melee/spear are noobs" come to mind.
This whole thing just comes across to me as an abject lesson in what nostalgia does to people. I'm not even saying the new AVP is a bad game -- My personal interest level was only slightly over other-fairly flawed games, like Dark Void, and that was mostly due to the IP. But people are talking about what a fantastic, flawless experience 1-2 were, and I just have to wonder if we were playing a different game ."

Nice observation.I don't get some of these reviews, they're talking about how the gameplay is 5 years old and not upto standard with moden FPS's.. what like MW2? Seriously, as good as MW2 is, it doesn't do anything much different from the first COD gameplay wise so it's an irrelevant statement imho, besides, if it aint broke... why fix it? What else can be done to make FPS's fresh and new? Not a lot imho.

Nostalgia has nothing to do with it, the 3rd really is a pile of rubbish.
QuoteDisplay MoreGood:Pulse rifle - Almost no recoil.
Weapon and Ambient Sounds - Spot on, best part of the game.
Bad:
Sprint - No game should ever have the move faster ability mean you can't shoot, its just not fun.
FOV - game can't be played for long on widescreen monitor as either marine or predator, it just makes me feel sick :/. Alien FOV is better.
Press E to insa kill - pointless and slows the pace of the game and is just plain annoying - after the initial "That pretty cool" due to what actually occurs.
Pulse rifle - Although it doesn't look like the M41a described in "Aliens", I'd think it'd pack more of a punch than it does.
Flame Thrower - Just stupidly useless
Alien Sounds - Since when did a facehugger make a "vocal" noise when stalking? Part of the scare factor of them was the silence.
There is actually no dedicated servers available yet, and the browser warns that is is "in beta"
Matchmaking - is it developers or publishers that like this idea? Its just a terrible trend that we are going to have to ride out I guess.
Removal of crouch - I don't understand why but it seems to again follow a new trend of removing movement abilities from games.
Regenerating hit points
Checkpoint saves
Short single player
Unneeded weapon icon's in the middle of the screen.
Doesn't look all that impressive - another example of games not advancing due to the industies lust for cross platform games. If they keep developing games to work on consoles that had aged hardware on their release as well as the PC we will be playing games that look like this for the next 5 years. I personally don't mind consoles, but I also liked that if I had game A on the PC, the game with the same title as game A on say, the SNES, was a completely different game, same setting different gameplay, I don't agree with there not being any advantage/disadvantage of owning any system (beyond one or two games), since all of them get the same games.
Judged by todays standards of games being produced this game is not bad, just not great. However the top of todays standards which are considered great and just not.
The unfortunate thing about avp is the gameplay has changed alot since the first game. And thats the game that people enjoyed, its true of all sequels though. Almost like the Design team ask the question "What made our last game fun?" and once answered they decide "OK lets remove all that!". A problem that can be seen across alot of game series.
Its almost at the point where the next AAA title to be release should be boycotted, regardless of reviews. A gamers strike of sorts. Need less sub standard games.
Its all about profits these days.
If you feed people garbage for long enough, the next garbage you feed them will seem like high quality garbage. But at the end of the day, its still garbage.

Just spent the last three hours crawling around with the alien. And it has affected me in a really weird way. When I move my mouse over a window like the browser I feel like crawling on it and I am very disappointed when it does not work. fubared brain

I have to agree that most games (shooters only) are completely dumbed down because of the consoles.

You mean you only just noticed?

Yes, It's news for me...

LOL HP
I don't really know why I wrote this, as any early pc gamer, we all know this is the case. I have cooped with the fact that it is the way it is.

way too much retarded shit espoused in this thread.
talking about consoles dragging a PC game down is bullshit, rebellion develop games on pc, looking at the pc version and only fixing problems on the consoles - rather than designing for them. this is a big reason it looks like shit because they haven't actually bothered to play towards a certain consoles strengths.
look at MW2, looks great across all 3 platforms. why? because the developers aren't retards.
as for "the story couldn't be anything except blah blah" - take a look, again, at MW2. the story is ludicrous and frankly very loosely tied together - but it's presented in such a way that it becomes exciting and the content of the game becomes the story.
where rebellion lack is they cannot tell a convincing story; they cannot get past "move here, shoot these".

Damn bro... you're the necro master.
But ah well, since you've dug the body, let's at least pay it's respects, here's an awesome behind the scenes with one of the dudes who worked on the thing. Such a classic.

Yeah, I wish they would revisit the franchise. What I'd really like to see is another Monolith game in the universe. Rebellion might have come up with the foundation for the game, but Monolith really expanded on it with AvP2. I swear, sometimes I feel like picking up the old LithTech to make an AvP2 marine campaign...
There's this company called Cold Iron Studios that are working on a multiplayer aliens game. Curious to see how that will play out.

Still better use of lighting, atmosphere, design and immersion than most modern day titles.

Their back catalogue of games isn't very reassuring. Probably a mobile game or something.

"Currently, the team is working on a new PC and console shooter based on the Alien franchise"
I don't think that studio has made anything so far, maybe helped Fox on the side. I remember first seeing their job ads for the aliens game about 2 years ago. Apparently it's supposed to be some online shooter coming to PC as well as consoles if this source is true: https://www.tweaktown.com/news/67122/col…oter/index.html
