Google Chrome

    Topic says it all - the new Browser by Google going live today. Seems like it has some nice additions and thoughts in it, not too sure about it being a home-phoner itself (it's Google after all!) but the fact it's OpenSource will hopefully clear this up soon enough.

    It's an interesting step, but I'm very sceptical it'll outclass Firefox and Opera in the long run. Firefox and Opera pretty much define web browser innovation IMO, between them being responsible for most progress in web browsers during the last decade and beyond.

    A lot of people are getting starry-eyed about Chrome because, you know, it's Google. But when you think about it, Firefox and Opera really know what they're doing when it comes to browsers. They both deliver superb browsing experiences, and as of their latest versions they both have really attractive new designs too (Opera has the edge in this department I reckon).

    Plus let's not forget that the web browser market is crazily competitive, so any nice features Chrome has will almost certainly be pilfered by the other big players. And with the other browsers having such strong install bases and legions of fans, they've got a big challenge when it comes to gaining market share. Google may find themselves unable to compete — as strange as it sounds for such a big company — because they usually go into markets that have less if any strong competitors.

    One thing I am happy about is that Chrome's using WebKit for rendering HTML (as seen in Apple's Safari), which as a web designer means I don't have yet another browser's issues to cater for.

    That comic could just as easily be about Firefox seeing as that's open source too (Microsoft love this fact, and even Internet Explorer 8 has taken the 'awesome bar' from Firefox 3 which just came out).

    So far I have a mixed bag of impressed and unimpressed opinions. It seems really fast when you're not doing much, but I noticed when compiling maps and stuff at work while watching videos, it just can't keep up and will freeze. Firefox seems to go on through just fine. It's also missing the basic ability to scroll when I click & hold the mouse wheel and drag up or down. It does, however, score a 78 on the Acid3 test, where Firefox only scores a 69. As for now, I'll stick with my trusty Firefox.

    I'm experiencing some occasional hangups while posting on forums, namely this? Where nothing will happen, and then after a while, everything I've typed will just pop up on the screen. Smilies stop rotating and whatnot too. It's possibly due to the spellcheck.. Or it just doesn't like our smilies :X

    Still a sexy browser though.. But if this continues, I won't be able to cope :x

    guys remember this is still only in beta...so there will still be some problems..

    i had one today on facebook while i was browsing a photo gallery, i was clicking on an image and it would keep bringing me to image 29 instead of the image i clicked on... that was kind of weird.

    but yeah im sure they will fix this stuff for the full release...
