I had a difficult time trying to get it to work on the PC. Five days of reading forums and eventually installing a patch, made it possible to get started.

The visuals and some of the levels are stunning. Excellent design and it made my jaw drop several times. Unfortunately, the level design itself is bad. Each map conveniently ends right where it started. It eliminates backtracking but it looks really stupid. Sometimes, you can even see the main objective right from where you start, except you have to take a 20 minute detour just to get there.

Everything has invisible walls and/or is clipped. There is nothing to explore. You can't really move a lot in most places, you can't even jump of a cliff. Hell, you can't even fall to your death in most places. This is basically an onrails shooter.

Driving is fun in the beginning, but you have to backtrack the same routes, with the same respawning enemies, at the same exact points, to same locations, for so many times that it really becomes repetitive and you just try and get it over with as quickly as possible. Same goes for the maps. However impressive some might be, all the bigger locations are visited twice. The first time you go from A to B and the second time you go from B to A. This makes the maps really predictable. If you think about it, you can cut the game in half content wise, since it's just repeating itself.

Megatexture does look great and no repeating textures make for some pretty pictures. Except, it means that all the textures upclose are very blurry to say the least and nothing in the world [asset wise] can move. Hell, even simple cans are superglued to the table/desk/whatever. The open world look is misleading, since you can go nowhere and the world consists out of 2 town maps, 2 outside maps and a dozen of maps you keep revisiting while still taking up 21 gb.

The quest system is downright awkward at times and I especially like the fact you can choose to accept quests, even though [with some] if you refuse, you can't continue the game. Not to mention that some of them are bugged or really retarded to say the least. Especially when you just visit the first town. You get sent from one place to the next for atleast 15 minutes before actually being able to get the quest.

Racing is actually quite cool, but again, only a couple of maps, limited race options, limited tuning options and no real benefits make them quite useless. Yes it's fun for a couple of races but you just don't have any motivation to keep doing it.

There is simply no real story. You wake up, are given an gun and play errand boy for +/-13 hours. The authority is bad, since everybody keeps reminding you of that and you have no choice other then to help the resistance. No explanations, no questions, just do as your told.

Isn't there anything good to say, except the visuals? Well yes, the different ammo types are a lot of fun. You can build cool stuff to help you kill your enemies in variety of ways and gunplay feels excellent. Enemy AI is good and you will have a lot of fun shooting. Too bad the entire game is far too easy and that every mutant encounter comes down to holding of the waves.

In the end, Rage is a dumbed down, unbalanced and mediocre shooter at best. It's unbelievable that this is the result of 7 years of work and a game of the legendary Id. For me, it was a HUGE disappointment.

So now that id Software has redeemed itself, maybe they can go back to Rage and reboot it. I would love to see a remaster that addresses all the criticism and turns it into something great. Port it to the new engine, get some designers from Bethesda for the RPG parts, edit the levels, give the visuals a facelift, give it a story with interesting characters, more racetracks/cars/tuning, more multiplayer (horde modus with mutants) and a SnapTrack editor to build your own custom racetracks. Plus a discount for those that already own Rage.

    Spread the word @BJA!

I think RAGE was great. I had a great time when I played it :) I don't know why it has gotten so much hate.

I played it in the last year and didn't rate it too much, got a bit repetitive, wasn't bad but wasn't excellent, felt a bit rushed later on. Has a cool setting though.

Yeah, it has a ton of potential and the gun-play plus enemy AI is excellent. I really want to love the game but there's too much holding me back. So I'm very serious about wanting to see it rebooted and done right :)

The way it was, yeah, I totally agree. However, I do see potential. Kinda like they did it in the recent Mad Max game but with a focus on racing and not all that open world Ubistyle stuff.

I said it a million times, I'll say it again... this is the most underrated video game ever! Sure, had it's fair share of problems, and it seems everyone and their mother has an opinion about this game. Funny you reboot this thread, I was going through some of my old stuff and found my notes/critiques on Rage the first time I played it, figure I post it here.

Lacks variety in the environments / themes. As much beautiful as the environments look, they get old after being looked at for too long; players need changes of visual themes now and then to stay engaged. A good example of this is the surprisingly good difference in visual theme of the eastern wastelands and the last sci-fi level, they felt refreshing and awesome to look at. The game art direction could be so much better if it had more themes, take for instance HL2 or Uncharted games, as you progress in the game you see more different areas and themes, in Rage I had the feeling there was a lot of recycling. (Too much of the same wasteland and metal corridors)

    Design

You have always the feeling that you’re between two walls, even on the outdoors / wasteland there was too much driving between two walls of rock.

    - Too many invisible walls that block the player from going places that look accessible. A good guideline I always use in my work is, If it looks to the player that he can go to a certain place in the level, he should be able to, and not be blocked by a 1.5meter wall or fence that looks perfectly climable; it breaks the immersion and reminds you that you are on a on-rails shooter. Designers should have found better/smarter ways to block the player (Level boundaries)

    - You spend too much time on Hub areas (such as Wellsprings). Quests are given, you drivr somewhere, you fight trhough a linear level and get back to the Hub you can from, this is in a nutshell the gamedesign formula of Rage; and this mix between linear and open world gameplay feels a bit weird.

    - Main quests often felt too linear and too short.

    - Secondary quests felt too disconnected from the game. You accept a quest, and you get automaticly teleported somewhere, where you have to achieve an objective (like Snipe 30 incoming mutants) and once you finish it you receive money for it.

    - Same formula applies for the racing in the game, there’s no real incentive to go in there and race! I think the game stands in a weird place where it’s neither a “flow” shooter a-la HL2, nor RPG a-la Fallout3 and it’s missing elements that made those two good.

    - Game is too easy at times. Only a couple of levels like the Jackal Canyon actually posed a challenge to me.

    - I would like to see longer main quest levels AND some more gameplay elements other than run and shoot, something more like level specific basic puzzles or just some more gameplay challenges to keep the pacing and gameplay fresh throughout the game. (Example) HL2 buggy level, it has perfect pacing and was long enough, with some combat pauses like the Magnet crane area in the beach to move the buggy back into the main road. I was expecting something like this on Rage, something that actually ties racing and driving in the main game; and all I got was disconnected and optional races and sporadic vehicle encounters in the wasteland.

    - Regarding the games HUD and inventory, the idea of only being able to carry 4 gadgets at a time is very limiting, I would rather see something along the lines of Bioshocks Plasmids management; it’s perfect in the sense that you can select any plasmid anywhere antytime rather quickly without needing to pause the game and select the plasmid you wanna use. And speaking of Bioshock, I think the semi-RPG elements worked a bit better than the ones in Rage do, I wouldn’t mind seeing more of it there.

    - The inventory is a mess! Gadgets (Bots, turrets, grenades, etc) are mixed among with the trash you pick, and the engineering parts. So if the gadget you want to use is not in that 4 gadget quick-use panel you need to look for it in the middle of that mess. I would have loved to have an inventory more like the well-organized Fallout3’s Pip-boy.

I meant what you could do with your car (upgrades and stuff), that was sorely lacking in Rage. I thought the racing itself was pretty good btw.

Good points @(HP). My biggest problem with the game was the level design. It was just poorly done. The invisible walls you mentioned were one thing, but all the locked doors and cramped spaces annoyed the hell out of me. Most of all though, the ridiculous design that each level ended where you started, really pissed me off. It eliminated backtracking but it felt so cheap. Sometimes you could even see your objective at the start, but the game forced you to take a 30 min detour to get there, only to exit in same damn place you started in just because now all of a sudden the door or well is unlocked.

Or what about that clumsy broken quest system? They ask you if you want to do it, if you say no, you can't progress the main game so your only choice is to say yes. If that's so, why ask the fucking question in the first place?

Funny, The Doom rage (pun not intended) has made me really wanting to shoot some stuff today and I was looking at my steam library to install something. Was contemplating finally playing this game.

@Sprony does the game allow for concurrent quests? I mean can you choose at some points to do a certain quest or the other? That would be why to give the "no" option in case you don't like the sound of what they're offering at that moment? Or maybe you would just rather go to do some more racing…

Indeed it's probably the most underrated fps ever.

They did a great job with environments, I don't remember being this impressed with the art in general in any other game. Textures may seem low-res upclose which is a shame.. but still, I found myself staring at things on every corner.

I agree with pretty much everything said here, It's just one of those games I keep coming back to because of art.
