When he shot the water, I smirked to myself and though, why not just go and rip the hand model from bioshock while you're at it, guys. I just think are so many other options they could have gone with than a a cliché apocalyptic desert. But I suppose that's the new iD now though, right? Make a generic new ip and bash to death your old ones as they know they can't ever make anything ever again that could top their old stuff in terms of design and ideas.

I dunno, id kinda stopped being relevant gameplay-wise after Romero was fired and Tom Hall quit...

I largely agree with you. Their tech was (and still is) top notch, but gameplay wise, nothing has particularly interested me for a long time. I played a lot of Quake 3 but, as great a game as it was, it was just a refinement of an existing formula. Doom 3 was a snooze-fest. Hopefully RAGE will shake things up a bit and re-announce id as a gameplay innovator but I doubt it.

I'd be totally ok with id going back to making straight forward action shooters. Show those young whippersnappers that Halo and Gears aren't the only games in town to emulate. I'd fucking love a new old Doom renaissance in game design. Gimme lightning fast character movement, ten guns at once, hundreds of things to kill per minute over hiding behind cover and waiting for your shields to recharge any day of the week.

But Rage is ok, too Day one purchase for me from what I've seen so far.

I think a lot of these concerns will be put to rest about id's direction in design and innovation when Rage is released. They've really expanded their teams and brought in a lot of new blood since Zenimax/Bethesda bought them.

I hope I'm not as disapointed with this as I was with FarCry 2. Don't get me wrong, I liked FC2, but watching all of the trailers and supposed features that were going to be in the game... I was extremely disappointed with the final product.

Regardless how it turns out though, I always feel like doing some game art when I look at this game.

Ugh, the color cast on the dead city image is way too heavy.

Yeah, but the texture work is great. Mega texture really pays off... C'mon id, release this already.

Kind of hard to believe no one had thought of doing megatextures before with how similar it is to light mapping (ok, not really, but same basic concept, just with textures and not a shading "texture").

Sorry if this has already been addressed, but are megatextures really nothing more than a image pyramid?

Low res textures are the worst offender ever.

At least they don't have blocky shadows. I've had it up to here with that shit. I was playing Silent Hill 5 today and took this screenshot:

And that's at max settings on PC! [Blocked Image: https://migrationtest.mapcore.org/public/style_emoticons/default/mapcore_smilies/emot_shakehead.gif] Abysmal. Completely unforgivable.
