The 3DS uses cameras to make the goggle-less 3D work AFAIK. They track your eyes and stuff, adjusting the picture appropriately.

As for the iPad, I'm not one for religiously getting every new iteration of hardware but I have to agree that your timing is remarkably bad. It's extremely likely that the iPad 2 is going to be announced within days, and the new model will be out in April. Apple tends to keep a very strict annual schedule (notice that every single iPhone has had a June/July release) so these rumours will almost certainly pan out.

I mean it's your money, but I'd personally wait a month or so if I were in the market for a iPad due to the likely inclusion of a 'retina' display (ie: double the resolution), as I personally think the original iPad's screen is significantly inferior to the iPhone 4's when it comes to sharpness, vibrancy, etc. In fact the iPhone 4 and the iPad have almost the same resolution.

It's most probably not too late to return it, so you know...

He'll still have to wait 3~4, maybe 5 months (max) before he can get this new shiny ipad (and thats IF apple stays with their time schedule).

Or he can enjoy his ipad right now, and sell it in 6 months and purchase this new shiny one if it really is that much better

It's most likely going to be early April, but yes there'll be a wait. He said he's waited a good while already though, and I know in the same situation I'd say it's worth waiting that bit longer in order to get a more refined product — especially when it's something that costs more than many people spend on first cars. Even if he were happy with the original iPad, Apple tends to knock prices of earlier hardware down massively when a successor comes out — with very little price reduction until then.

Just throwing the notion out as he's most probably still in the return/refund window. Not going to criticise the decision that's made, maybe he has more disposable money than poor souls like myself.

So the question is whether I want to wait 5 months (max) for a vastly (?) improved screen, and perhaps other worthwhile upgrades. I really don't know. I have ~two weeks to decide until I can't return it any more. I could, like Skjalg said, sell it and buy the next one when it releases. So I guess the question is whether the money lost on that trade is worth having the ipad for 5 months. If I used the Ipad for video I wouldn't hesitate for a second, but considering I'm almost exclusively using it for reading, browsing and mostly text-oriented activities I don't know how much it would benefit me. I'll think about it for a few more days. thanks for the input.

If you wait for the newest version, you're just going to end up with the same problem. I have similar dilemmas when looking to build or upgrade a computer, at one point you just have to pull the trigger. There's always going to be better versions of what ever you buy, sometimes as soon as a month down the road.

Ah, awesome. I knew the cameras were something to do with the 3D, guess my speculation was a bit off though.

My colleague has just been telling me about Google's new version of Android which is targeted at tablets. Have to admit that this fucker is giving the iPad a run for its money and I'm finding myself quite tempted. And it has Flash, so Flash games! Woo!

The first tablet to be using this OS will be Motorola's Xoom which itself looks rather superb:

I think HD 3D porn is the natural conclusion of this technology.

bought a Canon EF 50mm f 1.4 USM lense. it produces a fantastic depth of field due to the wide aperture. since it is no zoom lense it is also very usefull for low light situations.
