  • Goals for 2019?

    • grapen

My one goal for 2019 is to continue working on my own game, and have a preview trailer up before it’s over.

Switching engines somewhere along the way, I would guess. Scrapped work and hundreds of people that needs training in the new tools.

The texture scale should be 0.125 for these. Also try cranking up the ambient lighting, the shadows are looking very dark. Keep it up!

The only question is how to tell, the burden comes on us to enforce that, and it seems like it could be a tough one. We can certainly consider that, however. It all boils down to enforcement. You say "if people cheat that's on them", but actually it's on us if we're holding a contest. Part of building good rules is not making them so unenforceable and bordering on idea policing.

That’s much better than someone starting with an obvious 6-12 month advantage. That’s not really much of a contest anyway. Most of us won’t be doing this full time, so we’re already behind the curve, though there’s obviously nothing to be done about that, it is what it is.

Clearly our intention with that rule is to draw a reasonable line in the sand where people don't have a massive advantage building a fully-fleshed map that they can then immediately submit to the contest. Just about everyone has a greybox sitting around, the idea that we will be able to tell who was working on one etc. the problem with that, simply not a feasible rule to have. We did what was reasonably enforceable. Make sense?

Well, I sure don’t have a graybox, and I don’t need to tell anyone here that making one can take a long time unless you skip playtesting entirely. In a contest that spans six months that’s a huge advantage. I would much rather see fresh maps only, and if someone cheats then that’s on their conscience.

No the previous ruling was very ambiguous, see my reply to Ornatebaboon uo there ^. Some entries had been in production for more than six months last time.

Disappointed to hear that. Who’s doing the voting? Because seems to me like a majority of people in this thread wants to see fresh maps, for the spirit of competition. Makes me think the agenda here is something different entirely.

    • Maps already under construction. Unless I am mistaken, the last contest drew the line at maps that were anything more than a dev textured block out. In other words, if you added any models or textures to the map, you could not enter. The inherent problem here is that by including this kind of rule as a staple of any and all future contests, it can encourage a culture of secrecy. Mappers will hold back their arted work from the forum, through fear of violating the rules. Knowing if all maps have begun from when the contest is announced is also impossible.

This ruling was terrible in the previous contest. It read: Maps that were under creation prior to the announcement of this Contest can be entered, as long as a complete map version (layout and art) has not been released for public download. If that's not a half measure I don't know what is. Where do you draw the line and how is it fair? It was very sketchy. Imo the obvious answer is to not allow maps (a vmf) that was under construction prior to the contest. You'd have to assume most people will be honest with their submission.

Just now, Puddy said: hypothetically, i would theoretically like a contest which had a shorter deadline and was focused on creating a "neat whitebox" map which perhaps had a stated goal of trying to innovate the map structure (the latter not being necessary ofc)

by "neat whitebox", i mean a whitebox level that is fully playable and tested but also fairly fleshed out in terms of geo and architecture and where artistic considerations have been made to a large degree (architecture, shapes, vistas etc) but a full artpass hasn't been made

so the goal wouldn't be to have a 100% finished level, just a very promising base that has solid gameplay and the potential to look great when completed

I like this idea a lot. Contest length could be even shorter and smaller teams won't be so much of an issue. Then again you have the problem of funding for the contest since I'm sure faceit wants polished end products for their service. This doesn't bother me personally as I wouldn't mind a short contest without a cash prize. I think it's an interesting idea worth spinning.

No half measures this time, please. Let’s keep it simple. VMF’s, even grayboxes should be fresh as of the contest announcement. Everyone can join so long as they’re not a judge. Six months deadline, no delays what so ever.

It is what it is, and it makes sense from a financial (hesitant to say business..) perspective I suppose. I will ackowledge that there are good mobile games out there, but I don’t have any room for them in my life. They’re for the most part just another distraction, much like social media. Always there when you don’t need them.

So people over at faceit seem to like the map. I think it’s in a pretty bad spot visually though, and I don’t have the time to do anything about it. If any level artist is looking for a new project to work on, I’ll hand over all the files so you can do your own thing with it. I only ask to be credited for the original design. Let me know in PM if you feel up to the task.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? Game’s really good, the visuals and music is powerful and the voice acting is exceptional. Controls are going to take a while getting used to, there’s just so many buttons that I keep accidentally shooting while setting up an ambush. ?‍♂️

I love how some guy in the comments points out that the underworld didn’t even exist until much later, regarding what’s being talked about at 2:58. So not only is there hardly any story here, whatever scraps of it there are is not even canonically correct.

I want a new game that looks beyond the Diablo formula. I’d like to see a reinvention of the IP, much like we saw with Breath of the Wild and God of War. But even if it turns out to be another top down dungeon crawler, I’ll take it. ?
