Hehe yeah I know, open source algorithms ;) will go in and fix them by hand tonight!

Edit: while doing this I noticed two stray verts had found their way into my reference branch, jacking up the total tri count by 33%. Crisis averted. All is well that ends well.

  • What's your favourit environmental hazards in video games?

Hellkite drake from Dark Souls is the perfect example. As a new player you struggle through Undead Burg and work your way up to this great bridge with a mean looking drake staring back at you from the opposite side, as well as scorched stone and corpses littered everywhere. The enviro hazard is telegraphed as long as you're somewhat observant. If you move forward you're probably going to get roasted. You discover that there's no other way to go. You've also got a lot to lose since there hasn't been a save location for a long time. So you stop and go: Well shit.

PS. Even the normal map, usually I just blur the shit out of the normal map so it's smoother and reduce the intensity to like 50% or less.

Did you make the hedge in Oasis by the way? Got inspired to change my model again after seeing it :D

Super quick edit with the leaf tips, it looks a lot better I agree:

Just now, [HP] said: Cool stuff, you using custom normals? I can still see a bit of tilling, but nothign major and nothing no one would even care during gameplay.

I'd be curious to see it with less information off the color map, the tips of nearly ever leaf are getting too bright. What I usually do is I reexport the colormap with just the color green, and slowly bring some information in, gradients, then cavity, then AO. just saying this because usually meshes like this are more important that they look better from afar than when stepped closed to them.

Thanks for the feedback and tips! Yeah I'm not too happy with the custom normals, they could be better but I haven't figured out how yet :/ I still got a lot to learn there. I see what you mean with the tiling, I used Blenders particle system to disperse the "branches" super quick, but for some reason the particle alghorithm refuse to disperse them evenely despite claiming it will. I could go in and move some objects by hand though!

I hand painted the textures so I thought it would make a cool effect with the bright tips, but you are probably right, I'll experiment with them.

Hedge 3.0. This is probably as fluffy as I'll be able to make it without going crazy on the tri's.

I did complete the first few missions with ghost, but I had to do nonlethal takedowns in some situations to avoid getting spotted or use certain paths - again something I would have liked to avoid, but didn't seem possible.

No kills at all. Except mosquitoes. Those fuckers doesn't count :)

Sleep darts and generally just hiding in high up places. There are a lot of ledges and stuff that I imagine most players never even see.

So yes, maybe it is possible to complete the game with no powers, but in my case I got stuck in an area that I couldn't exit unless I broke my playstyle. A case like that doesn't exactly scream good design.

I finished the game with 100% ghost and 100% pacifist on no power mode. It is designed to be solved that way. You don\t have to like the game, I'm just giving credit where credit is due :)

7 minutes ago, Sentura said: On a different note, I really tried giving this game a chance... but it's just not working. I attempted it with the "no powers mode" and ended up just being frustrated, because none of the levels seem to be designed with no powers in mind. In addition to that, on the third mission I got stuck and had to restart because the path I had chosen lead to a dead end without powers. When I tried to go back my path was blocked by a guard that I had no way of getting around without either getting spotted or killing him from a range. Both of which aren't the ghost way I would have liked to play the game. Beyond that, the world feels empty and soulless, the story is boring and inauthentic (immediately upon a new contender for the throne, all the guards switch loyality without needing further proof? really?) and the AI feels gamey. I kind of wish I had given it less of a chance, because then at least I could have gotten my money back. Oh well.

Every level has a solution in no powers mode. I've done it and the devs even acknowledge it in this thead :)

I work a short walk from the incident and people were on edge for a while, they reported shootings in the subway station nearby but I think they're unconfirmed rumours still.

do players even care about good lipsync? is it such a low priority thing in modern games or it's just that difficult to do right? genuinely asking, I don't know much about these things.

Scope basically. Lipsyncing a linear narrative with very few talking characters is one thing, but for expansive RPG's with multiple outcomes to everything and tonnes of dialogue, they use algorithms instead. I don't have first hand experience, just relaying what the former lead animator at BioWare had to say on the matter.

Yeah I'm forgiving about these things so long as the game is good. Dark Souls has shit for frames in many areas, but I still love that game to death.

Still though, this was one of very few things they could improve upon, so it's awesome that they did.

I'm not really into these types of collectibles, but it makes you think on which hero would look best as a statue. Widowmaker is one of my least favourite characters, so that one's a no. I think I would give it to Orisa. She looks great.
