There seems to be LOTS of discussion about optimization, textures, brushes and aesthetics, but much less about layout. No matter how good a map looks, if the layout is crap - it won't be any fun to play.

I've been learning and building a lot recently and have had way more concerns with how I lay it all out for gameplay - rather than my eventual theme. What are the best ways of getting feedback and suggestions on map layout, specifically regarding stuff like important choke points and bomb sites?

I just have filler textures at the moment, is that enough to request playtesting? Or where do I go from here?

I'd answer that giving feedback is a good way to get feedback, at least it should. It's like if you want people to talk to you or smile at you, you just have to talk or smile to them. I'd like to help you next week!

Playtest are good for that too.

submit it, and as long as it works it is enough. Of course it is better if the layout is worked on enough: obvious things should be removed so that feedback is concerning your layout more than obvious things.

Yeah i didn't think search the workshop to check the names, i was trying to keep it on the warehouse theme name.

I guess that's being over used, i will just for something different that will stand out.

Yeah i will add some screenshots to the workshop page, i guess people don't always have the time to actually play a map and they want to just look at the images to see if its worth there time or not.

Thanks for all the help your providing me with.

think out of the box for the name: look at a recent operation map setting in warehouses.. its name was Facade which isn't a wharehouse-ish name, but it made it recognizable. There is also Import which leads to a ton of results, but not much having the same name, I think you should think about what makes your wharehouse unique, and the name will come up more easily.

To clarify I've done basic optimization. However, the skybox is a mess and I haven't started working with hint/skip yet. I feel that it's a waste of time doing too much optimization before the layout is set.

You can modify your hint brushes easily enough, unless you're always changing everything, which probably isn't the case. Also thinking about how to optimize with hints for example makes you think about the core layout, and may help you seeing some sightlines you misjudged and so on.

Finally it is recommended to do so early because if you do that with a detailed map, you'll end up having a lot of brushes to hide so that you see clearly what the level looks like to the compiler (without ffunc_details etc.).

I'm pretty sure he meant that his layout is non-square and more organic when he said that, but you need your stuff to sort of be on grid still in Hammer - otherwise how are you going to put in func_details and props? Hence my question how he does it!

why couldn't he tie off the grid geometry to func_detail ? He just have to select brushes and here you go. I do this all the time, and there is absolutely no issues with that excepting for the compiling time which is a little bit higher, a matter of a few seconds.

For props he can explain you his technique for placing them correctly but it will probably involve placing them on the 1 unit grid then adjusting off the grid. I'll let him answer that one though.

Hey, quick question that always comes up for me when I see layouts as organic as this one: how do you keep things on-grid in Hammer? Is it through usage of func_details or how do you manage to do that?

New layout looks like a step in the right direction. Still seems extremely mazey though, like a connector hell. If I imagine myself in literally any place on your map overview, I feel I could be killed from 3-4+ angles at all times pretty much. I'd try and reduce that further. Looks very unique and interesting though!

I think he does not keep geometry on the grid, which is probably an obligation as soon as you create something not square-ish. At least that's what I understood when he said he was keeping it off the grid geometry (in his first post).

You're obviously affiliated with them in some way, this is either a desperate plug or some sort of scam. Your name is even in the link

well I signed up because the only thing they asked me was an email account and my adress, and none of these are a secret and could lead to me being robbed (it is not like they wanted my credit card number or money in any way), and this link was supposed to redirect to this. (To be honest, they gave this link in the confirmation email, in order to be shared on social networks, so that I'd someone sign up after this link, I'd win too if they win or something like that, because after thoroughly reading their terms, it seemed like I could lose 2min to enter since it wasn't demanding anything weird)

However, I don't see it being a scam since it was Amd advertising it in their update utility, as they usually do advertise their latest graphic cards or such. It just is a marketing thing, I just don't get it that's why I asked!

sorry if it looks like a scam, I'm "affiliated" because I have an Amd graphic card and it is because of that that I heard about this. (Furthermore I didn't ask anybody to sign in, just to enlighten me about why they would want to do that)

Hi, this morning I had to update my amd drivers, and I saw that they were giving away some really expensive product like $11.000 computer and I wondered why ? (link for more info). I know that this kind of contest have generally some loopholes or benefits for them, but right now I don't see it.

I know they only want to give 2 computer and 10 ssd, but why do they want to make this won by luck?

What do they want to achieve with that?

If someone knows tell me :)

Movements do not feel like there is much fluidity, you have to jump too often or things like that, which can be annoying sometimes.

Other than that, bombsites may be a little bit too empty?

On everything else however it is great, so keep up the good work !

To corroborate what's being told here, I think that jackophant comment is that textures feel like old counter strike and not new generation cs. Simply find textures more actual and less old-ish. You could find an inspiration in de_season, or maybe closer to what you want to do: New York maps from Will2k, he has well updated his textures for the cs go version compared to his previous version. I think that visually, you can achieve something a lot better without starting detailing too much. I don't know if it is what he wanted to say, but that's what I understood of it, so I hope it'll help.

It is unclear how you can rotate between bombsites, but if you just have to jump down, rotation is too short and people always will want to be at the top bombsite since they can scope out the two courtyards and it appears they can fall down real quick and with some cover to low bombsite courtyard entries. In my opinion, that could be misused. What I'd do would be to make sure that either it is too risky to jump down and retake the site, or to make sure the easiest way in the lower bombsite is the entry indoors.

I'll get back to you when I'll have the time to test it!

The map doesn't crash anymore, but there are some black textures on the map. Looks like there are still some textures that you forgot to pack.

Edit: Judging from your screenshots, it has to be the plain green and blue textures that are missing.

That's good to hear, one problem solved. As for the other issue, it was dark green and dark blue, and I named them in french, so there was "foncé" in the name and it didn't packed it up because of the "é". I packed it myself, so it should finally work smoothly. (there are still some random black spots, still don't know why, but they appear on all versions, but these are rare and do not affect gameplay at all since they are in the scenery). Thank you for your patience.

I like the concept but you need hints of color to guide the player, clean up the overview and make paths work to shorten rotation time.

Maybe removing a path or too could be better also. But I'm not sure of that however.

But I want to stress the fact that it interesting visually ! It has an halo feel I guess

Your map does not have a suffix and my game crashes when I try to load your map. You can update your map up to an hour before the playtest begins, but the sooner the better and your spot will only be reserved for you if you submit a playable version first.

well it works on my computer, and on the steam workshop, so it must be an issue when packing with Pakrat? I am sorry for that, I honestly don't want to waste anybody's time, so I'll try to fix that asap.

Also I added a suffix on my file, so that's not a concern for now on.

I just updated cosmetics stuff, like direction indications and stuff like that.

I tried some things, I think I know what caused the problem. Uploaded a new version at the same link, can you tell me if it works now please ?

Is the map downloaded on the server at the time of the playtest? To know for how long I can update my file on the link I send.

Welcome to Source's hell! More seriously, you have to know where it starts from, then giving him the path to your skins from there. If the path is chosen by the source engine then, keep your folders in accordance with it so you need to do whatever you want but keep paths coherent

Sadly people see age and see under 18 and immediately think that its going to fail or its just not going to happen at all. I am also not recruiting for a project. I don't expect anyone to join me nor am i presently looking for anyone to join me. I am simply looking for some ideas.

it is mainly because at 18 you generally haven't studied yet, or at least you haven't finished, and this basically set expectations lower. I don't see how it is an outrage, you are expected to fail not because of your age but because of the fact no one has certified you're qualified yet, and you probably are not at this point, but that's okay you have a few years to become qualified.

the outrage is that older people can't find jobs even if they are qualified for the job..
