I really enjoyed it. I probably wouldn't watch it again, and I'm glad it was free, but I had a good chuckle the whole way through.

I put it on the same sort of comedy as anchorman or napoleon dynamite, where I'm a little bemused watching it, but will quote it with friends later for a giggle.

@NihiL Thanks for clearing a couple of things up for me.

Although I might not have acknowledged the verticality of the area, the fact that all those routes exist is still the problem even if it's slightly more obvious a route than I had initially anticipated. If someone were to be just dropped into your map, especially if you have complex routes, you need to make sure that the radar is clear on what I can and can't traverse. That tall wall at A looks like it could probably be awped through, and if you say there is a window there, it sounds even more T sided.

I highlighted the long sightlines to show long angles, not contact points. The T's might decide to camp outside the bombsite and that's an angle they can abuse, or a CT can watch from the site if Ts are slow/rotating from elsewhere.

When someone plays the map, they are going to be able to see what you would have shown in the screenshots. I had actually checked your workshop link and you 3 videos and 6 photos (including your radar) which really didn't give anything away.

You need to provide the eye candy for people so they know exactly what they're getting into and if they'll like it or not rather than gambling. When I browse the workshop I quite frankly don't bother trying a map if the mapper can't even be bothered to make a few screenshots. You need let your work sell itself!

@sevin It looks like your light source is coming in directly from the right whereas the picture you show would have quite a steep angle as well as light supplied from reflections outside. You can also seen in the picture how the light is reflected on the walls compared to your matt walls.

To mimic it you could put a low brightness light entity off centre from the window.

@TheGuma Lighting looks far to pale, and the whole shot looks washed out. Maybe it needs colour correction, but I feel the colours should be a little richer.

@LATTEH when can I expect to see that map in csgo? :P

I'm at work so am unable to run around the map which will ofc give me a slightly different view, but it would help to offer a lot more screenshots so people know what they are subscribing to. Not everyone wants to watch a video and even fewer will subscribe just to test it. Consequently I am working from the radar image.

Everything in that orange circle is far too complicated. It's a labyrinth. And by my count (judging from the radar, as this is what I would look at to help navigate myself) bombsite A has about 5 entrances. You need to massively simplify that area. If it's easy to flank (even easier when you are a couple of CTs down and can't hold all the angles), people are going to get shot in the back a lot and that pisses people off and will automatically deter them from playing again.

The route to A from T spawn can be done via mid, the southern most route. In fact, you don't even need to go mid as a terrorist, you have full access to all the routes going both ways which means mid has no tactical value.

The CT route to A is a pretty boring one if i'm honest, and is a horrific chokepoint. You could quite easily open it up.

Another problem you have is very long sightlines everywhere.

I'd get this playtested on mapcore (more / again?)

    TLDR:

    • Your routes are far too complex and will lead to people getting lost and flanking (neither are good)
    • Your bombsites have too many entrances (there's a reason it's normally 2-3)
    • You have far too many long sightlines leading to campy, AWP matches
    • A lot of your paths are too narrow (imo 160units wide is a good starting point, get some variation in there)

Rumours and hype aside, a mini guardian mapping competition would be quite good if the gamemode is as small scale as I have been led to believe it is.

oops, yeah 747 was a hostage map, not assassination! I always found tundra was very... linear?

That alternate hostage mode is a good idea. People on casual can be all kinds of special, and if they are going to troll then it's gg...

I've thought for a while the hostage maps could do with something a little more interesting than simply backtracking.

@SotaPoika Point taken, but "gun game" was a mod and they might not want to reuse the name, or they may have found the name to be inappropriate for the game in setting or ethos.

Assassination was exactly what was going down, it wasn't based on a mod called "kill the man" or something similarly immature. It was also already part of counter strike since beta 1.6 and as the game has exploded in popularity since it was dropped for source, there may be a great many more people who would enjoy playing that game mode now, possibly making it worthwhile.

    A man can dream!

@Skybex After reading that my money would be on them making the guardian gamemode a standalone option after the operation has passed.

It would be a pretty different angle from what's currently available, but I think it feels very reminiscent of the CoD co-op challenges. While not probably to the liking of the rather vocal competitive community, I think it would be quite popular if no reason other than it's fresh (fingers crossed for leaderboards).

@Vaya the old prefix for VIP maps was as (assassination), such as "as_oilrig" and "as_747", and I don't see why valve would have any need/want to change it. I reckon an unofficial assassination map could be made. someone should do it, and it might jump start the return?

I'm not understanding how/why you had to come up with this solution in the first place sorry

for instances to work, all the vmf files must be located in the "sdk_content" folder in your steam folder. Previously I just had my vmf saved on google drive and accessed it from wherever, having hammer installed on that computer.

This way, not only do I not need hammer installed on the computer, but I can still use instances and work remotely, wherever I am in the world.

I know the idea isn't new but I've not thought to fiddle with it before.

Maybe work doesn't allow Steam etc on their PC's? This way he can fap during lunch hour?

Mate, I don't need steam to fap? But unmonitored browsing...

In my opinion the plain MS remote desktop is the best both on phone and on laptop.

There are a few I've yet to try, so far teamviewer has done everything I need

I don't know how much of this anyone might know, or are at liberty to say, but I have a question...

Is it imperative for maps to have custom content to be included in the operations, or is it more the case that the people capable of creating custom content are just that much better, that they could create a map using stock assets and still be chosen for an operation?

I'm sure there's an FAQ somewhere regarding this, but not one I can find. It's just that every time a new operation lands I have a pang of motivation to fire up the bellows again. I'm under no illusion that my map will probably never be operation ready, but I want it to match the criteria as closely as possible as best practice for future projects.

    Thanks

I've found the answer to my mapping prayers!

Since using instances requires you to use the sdk_content folder locally stored and I have no SVN access, I have started to utilise a remote desktop app.

I can even map on my phone!

Teamviewer personal licenses are free, and while full screen applications run black (might be due to free account) hammer is ok.

Apologies if some of you do this already, I thought this was worth a share as I've found it to be extremely useful.

Google remote desktop assistant and logmein are also available from what I know
