I like this picture. A good amount of work on all fronts and it still has a ways to go. But it reminds me of something I would see in WoW for some reason. lol

I have been in the industry for so long now I dont even remember everything I worked on. I am happy to be doing what I love to do and in all honesty lately I have been more afraid that I'll end up unemployed for a long time again which was more soul crushing than working on a bad game. And I have worked on some bad games before let me tell you lol... None of it compared to having to push shopping carts at walmart while looking for work. During the interview they showed some of the games that they sold in the electronics department and one of them was Call Of Duty Black Ops and for some reason I pointed and said I worked on the first one. I am not sure why I bothered to mention it but nobody believed me anyway. None of those people were able to understand that there is a world outside of that place.
I had a guy talking during break with someone else talking about how he wanted to learn Unity but he messed around with Fallout modding. I mentioned that I worked on a couple really big mods for New Vegas. He said "Don't you push shopping carts?" I told him I had been working on games for a living for more than 10 years and he gave a sarcastic smile to his buddy like I was full of shit then continued talking about this one time he loaded up Unity.
*sigh* I'm more worried about experiencing shit like that again.

Here is the first of a series of videos for my GZDoom 2 level. I will be putting out a new Castle Does episode every day now. I have been working a lot on getting a system in place for me to be able have new episodes come out much more often.

With UE4 out. Who voted for the UDK? lmao
Quote from VilhamYeah I would agree with that, but UT4 isn't super popular, it isn't released. If it does become popular then sure, I will be the first to start making maps for it.
I however don't think it will. Just like UT3 it will get a small dedicated community.
Considering the different development mentalities and pipeline between UT3 and UT4 I would say its not safe to compare them.

I think this is a real consideration. Can anyone name any game other than UT4 (not even released) which uses UE4? Whatever you make isn't going to be played in all likelihood, and that's hardly ideal IMO. Levels are meant to be played, not hung up on a wall somewhere.
Well the cycle is:
1. A new engine is developed, usually, around a highly acclaimed game. (Top engines are rarely developed around no game at all)
2. Game has mod support and a community.
3. Point 1 and 2 germinate interest in the engine.
4. Everyone develops games for that tech and it becomes popular based on how popular one of the engines leading games has become.
So, if UT4 becomes super popular, it will garner huge interest from all corners of the world. That's my 2 cents on this. It's also why I view UE4/UT4 as a very important career stepping stone for anyone both employed and unemployed. Its very likely UT4 will have a large following.

Didn't know you were allowed to show SN stuff! Looks like fun though.
This thing is a huge change from what I am used to when working in the industry. I am actually encouraged to talk about the game and show it off. I will even be doing one of my videos on the design process along with talking about Voxel level design in general.
Normally, talking about stuff public like this would get me burned at the stake and black listed for life LOL
I had to keep asking for permission because I get so scared to do something like this!

Check this out, Voxel level design work in Unity. This is my first time working in unity too.

With that said, I feel as though voxels may soon be edging out standard terrain and model development pipelines at this rate.
edit: This is for Subnautica

The UT4 picture. Nice! That was built with mostly brushes for its block out now it looks like that!!

no way that's idtech5, textures are way too sharp.
I am very glad I was not drinking or had food in my mouth while I read this.

If its based on Brutal Doom then I am already working on my Doom 4 map!

Thought that was a screenshot at first....in fact I'm still not sure that it isn't O_O
Anyway, sweet ref images~
I cant wait until some big company does a April fools joke where they take a bunch of real life scenes and put stuff that makes it look like a video game would have then claim its a next gen game engine. So when I see stuff like this it makes me smile. I can't tell if this a photograph or not atm LOL
Hahah good call. Just false leak a photo to IGN mentionning it's made in UE4 and... voilà ?
Spruce it up some, get a pretty girl holding a chainsaw or something in the photograph. Something that would make it even more funny when you get reactions about how it doesn't look THAT real. Have a person standing in a T pose with full tactical swat gear on then take pictures from more than one angle. close up on his face too. You dont even have to lie about how its real time ray tracing engine.
LMAO

Unreal 4 right now is the cutting edge for any kind of level design work I have seen. Cryengine is a close second but fails on community support and intuitiveness imo. In this day and age I am going to have to say that source is looking pretty last gen right now on a lot of fronts.
I also have to say that learning a new engine isn't really as bad as it may seem. If you understand the ins and outs of something like source you have already learned a great deal about how all 3d engines work. Chance are a lot of you would pick up UE4 really quickly if you watched over someones shoulder while they worked on something in less than a week.

I am currently working on a map for GZDoom with Brutal doom as its base. Maybe that can counts as Doom 4... So far there have been no reboots, I'm not disenfranchised, I have good organizational skills, pre-production started less than a week ago. lol

Well.... he designed "face" for Unreal99.

Anyway, kidding aside, it's easy to hate on the guy, but he knows the industry and the market, and he knows what sells and what doesn't and he's actually a great game designer.
And say what you want, but he deserves a lot of merit for Gears of War.
I realize I am coming in 800 years late but i agree with this. I feel he deserves what he has earned and has contributed greatly to gaming in many ways. I wish I could have been a fraction of as influential as he has been.

Have you played Wolfenstein?! The game looks absolutely awesome, sharp and the levels have a very handcrafted look to them because they can easily hide seams with stamps (decals) that later get baked into the textures, and they don't need to worry about resusage as much as we do. (At least not from the technical point of view)
Rage was the very first game released with this tech, therefor it came out with it's fair share of problems, wolfenstein was just the first iteration and it's already looking amazing. Also, it's worth mentioning that Wolfenstein is also a PS3/Xbox360 game, imagine the next game that'll run on idtech5, it'll probably be next-gen only, materials will most likely have PBR and way more memory buffer to play around with.
The ONLY fault of megatextures was because it was way ahead of it's time.
Actually, the problem was that they wanted it on consoles when it should have been next gen aimed at high end PCs. It wasn't really ahead of its time really.
But that aside...
Megatextures increase the difficulty of the development process at no significant visual gain when compared to the standard Crytek or Unreal development pipeline. Its spinning the hamster wheel plain and simple. Show me a screenshot of the new Wolfenstein, sure I see your point, but its folly to say UE4 or Crytek engines cant match its quality at a fraction of the effort.
In fact, ill say that the days where having normal maps and specular is even a discussion are long gone. These days if every single material isn't a separate set of functions with a verity of variables its going to look dated. A huge amount of visual fidelity relies on complex materials with tons of dynamic features.

I hope Doom 4 is going to be great, I want a new Doom damn it. Unless megatextures suddenly become super amazing I am highly skeptical the tech will be regarded as next gen or even current gen.
