Fortwick is a HL2DM deathmatch map whose visuals and architecture are based on several medieval castles in Europe. The inspiration/reference was mainly drawn from Warwick and Bodiam castles in England and Carcassonne castle in France.

The map is a nostalgia kick-back to old school deathmatch maps.

Back in early spring 2014, I was having a chat with my good friend mr.P, and we were reminiscing about the good old times at planethalflife and how we used to upload our Half-Life 1 deathmatch maps on that site back in 2000-2001; then it struck me: I have not released a deathmatch map in over 12 years.

I decided to take a small break from CSGO and focus on creating a deathmatch map for Half-Life 2 over the course of the summer even with the little free time available.

I built the map just like we used to do in 1999-2000: it is fully made of brushwork and does not contain any prop, to capture the feel of an old-school brushwork-based deathmatch map. It replicates the mechanics of old school deathmatch maps in relying on weapons only before the introduction of fancy physics and gravity gun wizardry (I might release a second version with throwable physics objects such as wooden chairs/benches/barrels for the gravity gun fans).

    The map has 20 spawnpoints.

Please note that Fortwick will be remade for CSGO very soon.

Special thanks to my good friend AlcyToronto for his valuable feedback and suggestions during the alpha/beta stage of the map.

Thanks and enjoy this map .

i justified spending all that time on the assets for souq in anticipation of using them in an insurgency map down the line.

    Time well spent

btw, I was glancing at the contest page on Gamebanana and it seems they updated the page yesterday and added this:

UPDATE (29/09/14): Due to problems with uploading files to the steam workshop, we have decided to remove that requirement. Only one copy of the map is required, and must be submitted to GameBanana.com before the deadline.

Thought i'd let you know in case you have not seen it yet. Just make sure your map is uploaded to GB before the deadline (october 1 midnight)

Yeah but you should consider changing the name still. It was an official. You can still call it cuba.

    Was going to suggest this

@ OP: you can even call it de_cubana if you want to keep the same phonetic rhyme but be different enough from havana to avoid confusion.

Yes, you need to register an account with them.

For the folks who installed the game:

how big is the download size on steam (in MB or GB? my internet is a bit crappy these days )

can you still play against bots offline as was the case in Q3A?

are you required to register an account with Id/Bethesda/QL or your steam credentials/account are sufficient to launch the game?

    Thanks for clarifying.

Thanks! The majority of photos are shot with a Canon 7D. Videos are primarily taken with Nokia Lumia 925 and 1020.

The lumia 1020 is quite awesome; I'm using it to shoot some hi-res 38 MP pictures in RAW DNG and later editing them in Adobe lightroom, and the results are really impressive for a phone camera

Of course, it doesn't compare to a proper DSLR like the EOS 7D but it's way better than many "proper" cameras on the market imho.

Didn't see you updated this until now. Thanks for putting the effort into making this!

Do you have them in downloadable pdf form by any chance?

Hey buddy, thanks for dropping by

It's only HTML version hosted on-site at Gamebanana I'm afraid, but you can save the page as "web page complete" or "mhtml" and then convert it to PDF if this is easier for you to read or review later

    Thanks again for the support.

    Greetings with the final update

Ending the "practical placement guide" series, I have published the 3rd and final article in the series.

    Practical guide on occluders placement

It's a technical article that tackles the systematic placement of occluders in the Source optimization process.

The previous articles released over the course of the last 2 months dealt with hints and areaportals placement (links in previous post).

    Thanks and enjoy the read.

Brilliant work reminds a bit of de_celtic for CS 1.3

I agree with Minos about over-exposure and colors being washed out; you could try using warmer and less bright color correction like the one in aztec or train or reduce max exposure a tad in the tonemap controler.

In any case, awesome work so far; keep it up and looking forward to the final release

It's a technical article that deals with the systematic placement of areaportals in the Source optimization process:

    Practical guide on areaportals placement

The first article in the series was about "hints" published back in June (Hints about Hints - Practical guide on hint brushes placement)

The 3rd will cover occluders and will be published later this month.

    Thanks and enjoy the read
