It's a pity Notch is not on Mapcore, It would have been a great point in the "What have you purchased recently?" thread.

  • Ha Long Bay style - Far Cry 3 Map/Environment

Hey guys, I've been working with Ugui for a week now on a Far Cry 3 map with a perticular methodology...

Ugui came to me and proposed me to create a map without planning anything. The was to bypass the fact that we couldn't work together at the same time on the project file. We didn't find neither how to copy/paste from a project to another. So, we didn't plan any layout nor sketches. We just agreed on the map's theme which is to make some Ha Long Bay style environment.

We still don't know what gameplay we'll put into it but the process is pretty much exciting! One of the rule is that we can change/erase what the other has done without any problem, just to improve, if we fill it's better for the map. A few steps back but to go way forward.

The fun is discovering everytime what the other has done sine the last time you worked on. And this is so inspiring! Plus, the map is pretty large so we have a bunch of things to do and that allows us to change our focus is we are pissed of some part of it.

Of course, we loose few minutes each time we open the project file but the benefits are so great, so inspiring that it is totally worth it. The motivation is to the top 'cause the other can find and idea that will change the all thing and give you a whole new vision of the scene etc etc.

This is probably the most joyful iteration process I've worked with 'till now! Of course, it's based on a strong confidence between us.

After a week of cool work, beside other projects, here's what we've got:

What I used to do is make a screenshot of a part of a map where I needed to continue. I would make the screenshot in such a way that on the right side of the image you could see for 30% or something a building I mapped. On the left side nothing except brushes for the floor. Then I would print it out like 10 times with 90% transparency so you hardly could see it. After that I would draw over the outlines of the building I already mapped and after that draw a building next to it from scratch (or a wall etc.). This worked really well for me cause you have guidance for scale and perspective and you can see how it adds to what you already mapped. I really recommend to try this out.

That seems a pretty good idea to begin.

If you have an interest in painting and/or concept art, I don't see why you shouldn't have a go at it. Even some basic skills can make layout proposals and presentations more appealing; even more so if you can put your vision for a level into a format which inspires others, and provides a foundation upon which your teammates can work off of.

    Quote from Vilham

There is certainly no harm in trying. I try to sketch my ideas for others even if those sketches are terrible.

It's probably the main resaon that I would like to start doing this, i mean, really doing this. More than quickly on a piece of paper.

Hey Dsk Supinfogame! France Supinfogame here!

May be you could had some videos for you Total War Maps. It's would be easier to understand the strategies rather than on screenshots.

I like your site layout. I'm not sure that your "About" section is very useful, but why not.

The main problem that i've got is the fact that everything is in white. I mean, There is lack of color, your site feels a bit cold. I don't think you need many colors, just add one or two, in you text, in your suares.

And can't you take away the Wix bottom info zone?

I've finished the season 2 of Hemlock Grove. This show is really good (but WTF the end ?) It's another vision of werewolves and vampires that is pretty cool. And the actors are awesome of course and that makes a good show.

So, i've started to watched Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It's a serie starring Andy Samberg (the lonely island) and Terry Crew. First of all, I love this generic theme

Hey guys, I'm asking myself this question for a few days now; Is it worth it for a level designer to learn how to make concept art?

'Cause, you know, usually, you make your 2D layout of your level and you draw a quick sketch on a piece of paper to give you an idea of what it will look like and them you build something in whiteboxes. And if you have a concept art to refer to, it comes from a concept artist.

But what if you don't have a concept artist in your team? You search references on the internet? Is that enough to share your thoughts and vision?

Of course, it's always good to have another skill, but the matter is time. Wouldn't it be quicker to build a level in whiteboxes? But isn't it easier to communicate on what you're going to do with a concept art you've done?

    Tell me what you think.
