The frame rate determines "screen smoothness", but there are other, "hidden", numbers. In multiplayer there is rate at which things are updated over network. If there are physics simulation, the rate at which physics is run. If there is AI, there is another rate related to how fast AI reacts or how often AI checks for changes in the game world. The other rate that I can think of now is the frame rate for body animations. I mean, there are many cases that games run at the same frame rate yet they don't feel exactly the same (I'm excluding motion blur here).

120hz first this way games don't have to be upper bounded by 60fps.

PC gamers with two monitors are accostumed to 2560 x 1080, wider than 1920, not so gpu taxing as 4k.

PS3 / X360 look good. I mean, apart from obvious texture downgrade, shaders downgrade, draw distance, distance fog, ridiculous aggressive lod, etc. The geometry level, baked lighting, faces, uniforms, wet reflections, look pretty close to PC / PS4 / Xbox one.

But I don't understand why they made frame rate sacrifices along with baked lighting and reduced player count while keeping maps sizes.

a PC with 512MB of RAM and a Geforce 8 with 256MB GDDR3 would never run it.

It is 720p in one, 1080p in the other. That's embarrassing, because they must have made the whole game optimized for 720p, otherwise there would be content that when downscaled from 1080p to 720 is simply lost.

    Amazing how dated these look!

Yes. PS3 and Xbox 360 came when Shader Model 3.0 was relatively new and video cards like Geforce FX were pretty common, with buffers of 128MB - 256MB. And triple core, eight SPUs Cell, that was overkill compared to the relatively new dual core CPUs. What were the most demanding PC games of that era? Doom 3 and Far Cry?

Nowdays every game is pushing multi threading, buffers with over 1000 MBs and the ever increasing GPU power.

So, that speculation about PS4 holding 50% more raw computing power is manifesting in BF4 in the form of 50% more pixels...

But, if they can at least push over 720p and maintain stable fps, that's already a win over previous gen with all their struggle with sub-HD, unstable fps and screen tearing or input lag.

PS: The image quality comparison done by EG is biased.

TVs and mobile are evolving faster than consoles, yep.

But where I live, the average area of flats is going down when you compare year 2010 to yeat 1990 for example. That is against the increase in the average size of consumer TVs.

According to Nvidia and their G-sync tech, the reason behind monitors and TVs being tied to 60hz comes from power lines frequency. For historical reasons power lines transmitting at 60hz is a standard in many places. What G-sync does is to essentially enable monitors to be in sync with gpu's outputted frame rate, negatting the need of a game to have vsync enabled to prevent tearing. But then, 60 hz is not the world's standard, there is also the 50 hz one.

Don't know if its technically possible to have screen with adaptative resolution. Depending on what's going on, the resolution could be traded by fps or vice versa. I've read that killzone liberation resorts on variable resolution to keep fps up.

Publishers can be dodgy by advertising res and fps without specifing if it's SP or MP.

It's half shocking because the same thing happens with iphones, cellphones, tablets, laptops, TVs, etc. But I don't remember seeing a single product in which the brute currency conversion gives a multiplier of 10!

I can only think about two things: there are few units, just enough to tell the market that the product is there and not delayed; and incredible insurance rate behind it, either due to some financial risks or costs associated to transport and delivery, or even both.

[edit] wrong. According to a brazilian lawyer, the calculation does, indeed, include absurd taxes. The profit earned by the store/seller is much lower than the taxes alone.

The short trailer with the time freeze event reminded me of Heroes, the cancelled NBC show. Flipping "quantum break" word order gives "breaking quantum (physics)".

Haven't games hit photorealism already, at least in static environments? Static shadows, static lights. Compare UE4's infiltrator with FFSW movie from 2001.

I agree, the number of players / number of servers gives a ratio of fewer than 1 player/server in arena FPS games. I don't have the patience to keep practicing to be a highly skilled player in those FPS.

Nvidia recently published this. Pretty neat. But pretty unusable in games because I don't think any game maker is willing to trade heavy lighting computation for latency and possible "what if online goes down?".

Why is DoF gone from the PS4 version? Sounds like more of an incomplete implementation of that techdemo / engine than a PS4 flaw to me. Those who know and understand how game engines work will know it's not a very fair comparison when you put a console next to a PC and the console version is not even 100% implemented/integrated with the tech yet.

PS4/Xbone is more than capable of handling DoF and parallax mapping, among other things that are noticeably missing.

Those comparisons just tell to the general public "look! that same thing is running on different hardware at same speed!". But the code is all hidden nowhere to be seen. There can only be guesses about the differences spotted here and there.

There can only be wild guesses about differences in those side by side comparisons because the source code is never shown.

Take a look at this: http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree

But I don't play that game because what they did to their server-client architecture makes the game feels out of sync, because it really is out of sync in every second of play. The other reason is that even though the skill tree has freedom of choices, they made every magical property and drops randomized in a way that it's a game of luck, a lottery that forces the player to play for as many hours as he can to achive something good, or gamble endlessly to increase the chances of achiving something that you want.

The root of all evil in D3 direction seems to be the target audience. They changed everything, from art style to background story.

I didn't play D3 so I can only talk about D2 and PoE. D2 is hardcore by nature, with a layer of strategy given by sockets, charms, skilltree with synergies. Plus, broken items and skills. I'm not keen about playing so much and investing so much time building a char, one more reason for me to left PoE. One of the reasons D3 changed everything, 10 years later, what happened to the audience that played D2 10 years ago?

Casual vs hardcore. Complexity vs simplification. Straight foward action vs tactical advantages combat. PoE matches complexity and hardcore. D3 seems to have matched casual and simplification, but not entirely because there is still hardcore farming and randomization. Combat in D2 was more tactical, with monsters spawning with resistances / immunities and curses / auras. PoE is more close to D2 in respect to combat.

Incredible though, that dilema resembles trading card games. The skill tree, spells and uniques in PoE must be hard to balance, much like balancing thousands of cards in a competitive trading card game. Remidns me of what happened to MTG, which have seen a growing popularity in casual formats.
