Yeah, they should be as professional/serious as we are, right? God forbid if they have a cats thread.

Cats are the foundation of the Internets! If your site doesn't have a cats thread/space, it's not a valuable community

I dunno, maybe i misunderstood the aim of the portal, but looks to me it would like to be a Linkedin for the Game Industry, and i don't see how it could compete, if the premises are those.

This was another flashback sequence where the player walks through one of Chell's lost memories. The setting is her Birthday which happened to take place on the beginning of the 7 year war.

Lovelly! It has the "fair" vibe that Infinite is chock full of

    Really great environment storytelling.

I remember you posted before the screens of the other flashback moment.

Really like the "under renovation" feeling of the place in the hostage scenario.

I didn't know about this project, and frankly i think the transition to Unity is really for the best, Source-powered games aren't this rich, visually.

    Looks good!

"Gird your loins" "Bods and counting"... doesn't seem very serious platform the design of the site itself doesn't help, seems thrown together in a couple of afternoons.

I thought this was an adaptation of Zone Of The Enders

Guess i'll watch it, without expecting much of it... teen drama is teen drama, and these look like the years they are going crazy about it.

As Sentura said; i'd just add it will most probably gross enough to make a sequel, but how big of a splash will make the difference between a legitimate saga and a new... Narnia

It's pretty standard, and i'd see it as a positive trait, i mean: you've done things the same way most portfolios in the industry are arranged, so that's a good start. I guess then it's just a matter of contents... and there's where you are at, so it's kinda ok.

You could arrange to have your contacts always present in the header, have seen that a lot.

You have videos of the games, which is good, but I'd put in also screenshots, YT may be blocked behind some firewall in some places.

Nice you went on to illustrate the design process, but again, i'd first put screens.

I haven't read everything, but i've sifted through the page for the SC2 mod, and you can probably refine the writing a bit to have it even more fluid; i'd definitely put the "haven't tested with players" error, first.

Hope the veterans will comment, i haven't been employed in the Industry so...

A side note: as a web designer it hurts my eyes to see everything is an image and you almost have no text. Haven't check the code to see the platform you are using, but using the proper tags will help your positioning in the search engines (correct use of titles - h1, h2 ecc - is very important in that)

  • What have you watched recently?

I'd give it a 6; I liked the first half because of the accent on travelling, then it becomes quite standard in the genre.

This looks fucking awesome, pity i'm on mobile now, makes me want to turn my computer back on to view the screens on a big display.

Lets get super nerdy guys. How did you first play hl1? For me it was on a cyrix 200 @ 480 res in software mode at like 25fps

I started playing it on my dad's computer*, he had a Pentium 333Mhz (those placed on those awkward slot-in cards) and I think we had an nVidia TNT (so played in OpenGL @ 1024x768 on a 15"). I remember I was loving playing with the ergonomic Logitech mice

*we even tried to play together (me at the mouse, he at keys or taking turns) and i remember that, after the first couple of sessions together, he went on by himself just because he hadn't to go to bed early like me

After finishing it on there, I built myself a machine on AMD 450Mhz and started mapping.

As far as peoples comments on which era had the best mods. It might be because I dropped out of playing every mod I could get my hands on with HL2, but to me HL1 wins hands down.

I don't have numbers, but it appears quite clear to me that even sp add-ons became much less popular with HL2. Sure, along more possibilities, it became more time consuming producing those, but still... it was the same with multiplayer maps: before HL2 I was an hardcore player of DoD and CS and there were a ton of maps around, with the Source versions I still played a lot, but community was less receptive. I think it was because of Steam, stuff came down the wire by itself so newcomers didn't bothered about installing maps.

Now with the Workshop, i wouldn't say there's much more stuff (but i'd guess so), but for sure more people is inclined to adopt it.

I was a firefox fanboy, but some time ago when I started to write some text, it lagged a lot and made me look like a retard that couldn't write a whole sentence. So I changed to chrome. Gotta check if that bug was fixed.

Latest versions of FF are much faster, at least on the Mac. Before they switched to the quick-turnaround update model (a-la Google) it was really a pain just to open it. Gmail still doesn't support some shortcuts on there :-/

Now I prefear FF because it does clear memory when you close a tab, it has the same Safari trick of not rendering(?) Flash and gifs when out of viewport (so cpu doesn't max out) and I also found a neat session manager extension, if it wasn't for its session management, i'd always prefear Chrome (in fact I kept regularly switching between browsers because there was always a session i didn't want to restore at that moment ).

I recently read that they have developed a whole new programming language (with Samsung), and they are developing a totally new browser with that, i'm curious if it will stay confined to smartphones or it will be brought to desktop.

Its definitely aimed at getting some work but I guess I didnt know what to show, so I just edited all my screenshots like I would my photography. Should I just flat out show more work or something?

Depends what kind of job you are interested into.

I think your website is perfect to get hired for photoshoots. As a freelance. Throw in a few renders, and I guess lots of marketing agencies would be happy to work with you.

If you are interested in getting into the Game Industry –which I'd assume, since you are posting here– this portfolio doesn't do justice to your work.

I'm not an expert that has made a ton of portfolios and applications and i'm not employed... but first: you are giving more relevance to the photography, second: as Algor said, you have to give much more informations about the project. More shots, even renders, wouldn't communicate much about your skills. Yes you can map, but how do you work? I mean, it's not like that you are posting stuff you made while working for a recognised company (i'm thinking to RickD's website, which just posts screens, but i mean: it's Battlefield 3 ).

PS: in the interview article, shots look more flashy.

Also, the menu-text is small, i don't think that an HR guy/lady would notice at first sight you can map, and maybe they would just close the browser on you

You are a great photographer, i'm sure i've seen something already when you had the interview up on mapcore, but really, congrats.

Is this a portfolio just to share your stuff or is aimed at finding a job? Because i'd expected more ephasis on the level design (in the second case).

That said, load time would be quite good if all sections took the time of "Cerion" (~11sec), "The Void" took much longer. I have a shitty connection btw.

Improvements? Well, I trust your friend has done a hell of a job (really like the site), but I'm pretty sure i've seen scripts to show images as soon as they were downloaded. At least you should really have something spinning in the middle of the frame, if not even a progress-bar, to make clear something is loading (not everybody will notice the stock spinning icon in the browser's url-bar).

I also appreciate A LOT the horizontal scrolling, is something i like a lot and find very natural when done this way, usually is done poorly (read: laggy) but yours is fluid that said, it wouldn't hurt to have a minimalistic arrow to click... people are dumb.

Sentura's point is not wrong, I mean, if you read it in a broad sense.

I guess the reason why there aren't so many featured in games, is that this kind of buildings are ideal for setpieces: that by definition is a "one-off" location in a game. They also need a lot of empty space around, thing that generally is not very good for gameplay (in shooters). Internal rooms are huge, to the point that it could be necessary to scale down(?) (i'm maybe wrong, but Grand Central's inside in Crysis 2 seems scaled down to me).

As far as I can remember, scenarios in which these structures are used, are all the same: "last stand" or "final assault"... and for me they tend to be kinda the low point in the experience, instead of the peak of excitement (i'm thinking about COD and Kane & Lynch).

Btw the White House was featured also in Conviction (really enjoyed that chapter), and they also put in the Lincoln Memorial. (Can't find good screens.)

Colorwise, I like best the last but one, the latest iteration reminds me a bit too much of Aztec. That said, that is definitely more readable.
