Who says you cant use the 5% model and also use a publisher?

I'm not saying publisher are disappearing, just taken out of the equation because if you have a publisher costs are gonna be higher. Also probably the 5% is gonna be paid by them to Epic?

The first comment in the RPS article raises a very reasonable question. "Does that mean you automatically get approved on Steam?"

Obviously probably not the same leap forward, but it'd be cool if the Source 2 reveal was anything like this was for Source/HL2:

I was thinking about this earlier! But like... if they showed this, ported to the Source 2 [Blocked Image: http://i.imgur.com/c497D.gif]

Yeah but they said "free for content creators"… which makes me think that people making hats and maps are going to pay royalties the moment their item sells (of course), while if you want to make a brand new game on Source you will still have to pay a license of some sort.

I hope they just worded badly the press release.

Of course while there are no UE4 games open to custom content, Source is much better choice.

About server time… I think there's also a lot of "luck" involved. There's so much content coming out, and community is not so inclined in trying stuff. Definitely thanks to the workshop subscription system and the Operations, CSGO has leapt forward, but success still not granted. It's kinda the same clutter problem that there is on app stores.

Yeah the naked eye can immediately see that Unity is cheaper in the long run, but I guess the cost is justified. And shouldn't the total amount due be less than the traditional publisher cut? Who might not cover all your running costs anyway(?).

Speaking of running costs, do you know if Steam/App store/etc and engine licensing are deductible costs from taxes?

I think unity is way better for creating games for the mobile, but if your main target is PC and you are in no way interested in creating an ios app then I'd go with unreal. Yeah unreal can target ios, but not as easily as unity.

In curious, why Unity is better on mobile (atm)? Is it the tools, performances…

they're both really powerful engines, each with their own pro's and cons, it's very hard to call one better than the other at this point. It all depends on the kind of project you're doing.

The one thing I was liking for older versions and that was making me interested in trying it, was that there was still a lot of brushwork in the construction of environments. I wonder if now it does rely on that at all (other than greyboxing)

Oh yeah, we talking about ancient history, thought there was something going on recently (like they redesigned Train).

These changes were definitely great, but I still hate the map.

    Great interview guys.

The whole map choice system is to be overhauled imo. Also thank you Shawn about the words on Nuke, I hate it, hate it, hate it... and it almost always comes up the rare times I try to play! I wish it was... nuked.

Also, a question arising from your comment about Nuke: he has been doing consulting for Valve to suggest changes? Anyway dunno what i missed, but to me looks the same as it has been for the last decade?

As it is this press release is a joke, we knew Source 2 was coming. we just need to see what it can do.

Hopefully they'll show the engine tomorrow, they must!, since they are talking renderin.

On daily business, there's no much point in porting a map over, if they don't port the game.

I know it's asking much, but i really hope the new toolkit will be back compatible allowing to make and compile for CSGO and hopefully other Valve games.

Edit: WAIT A MINUTE! The press release days "free for content developers"!!

This doesn't sound at all like Epic or Unity are doing. Sounds like engine will still be tied to games to me :/

That's basically a question I was going to ask myself as I'm finally getting back and actively working on game stuff: is Source still relevant?

I guess that when you know how to build a map it doesn't matter much what toolkit you use, but how quickly you can get acquainted in learning new ones.

So I think there is no escape in having to try stay up to date and do something on every engine.

I guess that for starting, Source is probably easier? I mean brushwork is easy to grasp, while other engines seem to rely on meshes to build anything. I have no modelling skills and I was thinking "great UE4 is free, but how long before I have something for a portfolio?". Also there are no ready games to map for really. And that's the same problem I was having last year when I wanted to try Unity: I can run it on a Mac (on which I was limited to), but what game allows modding or custom content?

Lastly, I'd say 5% of revenue is completely worth the source code you get from Unreal, giving the team's programmers full control.

I perceive Epic's platform as more reliable and powerful, hence my previous question "why bother"

So if you manage to sell a lot, you earn more with Unity than Unreal, because you pay that fixed license.

Is there actually a reason to go with Unity now that unreal is free? Other than been accustomed with the tools/having the company already on the Unity pipeline or personal development.

I mean for as straightforward the deployment to exotic platforms like smart TV or Blackberry, there may be some optimization needed, and I don't think the return is worth the headaches?

There are 2 physics related talks by Valve

    Tuesday

11:15am-12:15pm: Physics for Game Programmers: Robust Contact Creation for Physics Simulation by Dirk Gregorius (Valve)

3:00pm-4:00pm: Physics for Game Programmers: Physics Optimization Strategies by Sergey Migdalskiy (Valve)

so picking the second as a disguised game announcement sounds a bit too arbitrary... but still hoping.

I'd be just happy to hear about Source 2, tools not tied to a single game and freely available from tomorrow.

I'm up for it, just recently I have been trying some HL2 add-ons I couldn't try in the past years.

Dunno if it's worth mentioning, I've done the main bulk of qa for Riot Act and I usually explore every corner of spank maps.

Di you need just the stand, classic demo recorded from console, or you mean an already encoded video? (fraps and the likes)

I always refused to watch playthroughs cos usually, if I want to spend that much time watching it, I want to play it. But this is seriously the first game I'm considering giving a try for this.

Well, after watching the Angry Review I'm not even sure I want to do so... that lycan behaviour, seriously??

I'm not sure that their relationship with Cyanogen is definitely done, i've heard that it was maybe a mistake. I'm not so sure, i'm not fond of this kind of smartphone software things, i'm more into hardware.

But yea a friend of mine told me that if i want i can already have a beta of Lollipop, but it should appear officialy soon anyway, so i'm just gonna wait.

The phone is perfect (for now, 0 problem), but that's also because i used to have a Galaxy S1 that a friend lent me. It was running on Android 4.4.4 but it was lagging a lot, at the end of its life :(

It is a sudden leap to switch to a phone as powerful as the OnePlus One.

If you want more infos/photos don't hesitate to ask.

I'm not gonna switch anytime soon, but i love the cleanliness they had first in Cyanogen.

As per the news i heard it from him
