Like Chet mentioned in the VR talk, movies just go for something that looks good on screen, not at the practical implications. Sci-fi is stale atm, imo.

Alien Isolation didn't feel the urge of introducing stuff, and everyone praised it did the retro-fi look. I think they could have done it in Prometheus as well, it would have looked fresher than what they have, which looks like any other movie from 2000 onwards.

I know it's normal, but doesn't make it right, I think it's lazy.

  • What are you playing now?

I have been installing several things cos my hands are hitchy to put the Xbox One controller to use. I feel i need a mindless tps shooter, so yesterday I ended up installing Gears Of War, which I never finished. Can't play it cos I need the serial code I left in Italy, waiting for my dad to come back to me. I'm surprised MS took the time to revamp GFWL -I heard they were shutting it down- so there was a workaround to actually install the game.

Other than that I played a few hours of Death Rally -- you can see how it was thought for mobile it's such a treadmill and seems to get nowhere. Decent for 20 min sessions.

Yesterday I started Black Mesa, just took me as long as with the original HL to get to the chamber, fooling around with all the scientists.

Also started Tomb Raider... and the comment I have for now is "can I play?" cos the intro part is really not how you want to start a videogame I think, so many QTEs and little control.

Moved the first few steps outside, after Lara camps for the first night, and I must say control of the character doesn't feel alright, she sways around too much, I hope it's temporary until she patches herself up a bit better, but not really trusting this. In video the movement seemed different.

And with that last part, you lost me, sorry but now you're sounding off untrue facts.

It's great you've done this and yeah you really believe in your toolset because you have a passion for 3DS Max, but we all use the Hammer editor, it's what we have learnt to use for years to craft our worlds, if someone has prior knowledge of Max then I'm sure they will be interested in WW as it does look really useful, but you will find that is not the majority, I should know, I've been floating around for 13 years myself and all I ever saw was XSI or blender being the go to tools for hobbyists as they didn't cost anything above maybe a pint to a mate to get it all working for you.

Keep up good the work on WW.

Mmh I'm not sure I understand this post.I'm one of those who never used anything but hammer. I'm not so keen in trying modelling software, it's a scary feeling having to go through a lengthy learning process.

I think the adoption of these tools goes hand in hand in what you want to achieve, I mean long term.

Is perfectly fine to keep using only hammer, there are professionals who do, but if you are looking into getting in game dev, acquiring skill with a modelling tool is useful and where pure modelling is scary, starting with something more relatable to you might make it easier. There are companies working completely in these 3d packages.

Also Stuff that is clunky in hammer is probably much more functional in 3Ds/plugins. Ie: yesterday I was looking at a curved wall with support pillars: replicating it in hammer is a bitch, where what you'd need is the ability to move the pivot outside the brush, like you can in Photoshop or Illustrator. There was a post from KFS showing the workaround he had to go through when creating koth_roundhouse… I was wondering if plugins like this have addressed these problems.

    Edit:

When you can legally acquire an expensive sw like 3Ds for free or cheap for personal use, there's little excuse not to. Depends what you want to do. Personally I know it's perfectly possible to release a good map with only hammer knowledge, so I would like to get to that before learning a different pipeline.

With the success that CSGO is having, I am seeing a lot of professionals flocking to Source mapping to get into the operations, I think that's the kind of users this tool might be most beneficial: they might be working with a modelling tool only or very similar to it already in their companies, and they know the value of a good tool and are not afraid to spend little extra to be more productive.

At the first screens I was going to say that the tiles artwork was a bit too much and not very realistic cos I haven't seen that building in my walks around Venice... fancy that; with new lighting and better surroundings, it's starting to fit quite well! Although I think it's still a bit distracting and a bit "too much", sometimes realism hurts. Maybe wash the artwork down a bit, like weather wear, aging etc.

pretty good pilot. I like detective stories, and I always liked Titus Welliver, finally a leading role.

At my first view I appreciated Prometheus for the religious aspect they did put in (which in contrast made a religious friend of mine hate it). But then I started thinking about all the rest and it's just a disappointment.

Plus, if it's a prequel, why they have all those fancy technologies they don't have later on? Blah

Not sure I understand what you want to do, if you want characters there's no way around finding someone able to do animations.

If you just want backgrounds, you can quote easily get to have something moving and interesting with some clever layering to create a parallax effect.

Those scenes in that video are all 2D planes in 3D space, I'm sure.

You might find useful checking this video where they used Unity to make a graphic novel

First time I watched Prometheus found it alright, but disappointing. Watching it again, after watching Alien, uncovers so much wrong.

Fair enough for those who like this, but that show is retarded, it makes no sense and is just plain annoying to watch. Quality maybe, but writing is laughable and embarrassingly bad...

You mean the whole plot thing? If it's that I can agree, the first few episodes where more catchy, then when the whole book plot comes out it feels retarded indeed. I tried to ignore it and just concentrate on the twists... sometimes were clearly forced or foreseeable or over-used.
