  • Would you help me find a name for a game site please?

Always difficult coming up with stuff like this.

One thing I always find helps get the imagination flowing is thinking of well-known references that relate to the theme without being as obvious/boring as just using words like 'game'. It also makes the name feel more personal.

So with games, perhaps things like: Button Basher, First Person Blogger, Doomguy's Writing Desk, etc. Shit examples because I just got up and have a headache but its the kind of thing I mean. Just a little reference some people will get, and even if they don't it's easy to remember.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. I came up with: Game Over, Game On, Insert Coins, Level Up, Power Up, 1Up but all were taken. I do fancy Press Start to Continue but as a url that seems unwise (http://www.press-start-to-continue.com).

I'm trying to help my friend out. He wants to start two blogs. One about his love for games. He'll be writing articles, reviews and thoughts about gaming. The second is about his love for movies. Here he'll discuss news, write reviews and also do some articles. It would be cool if the name could be recognizable between the two sites. Like GameTalk and MovieTalk.com (both taken, just an example). We did come up with some cool names but all of them are taken of course.

    Any suggestions?

It sucks for them but i welcome that reviewers try to bring their scores more in line with player opinion. I hope it stays that way and helps to counter some of the trends in AAA. We have now crossed a line where big budget and hype alone are not enough anymore for games to receive 9's and 10's by default. That's a good thing.

Steppen doesn't say a lot, but when he does, it's pure wisdom and truth.

Because of the shitty state of game forums/magazines I've been toying with the idea for such a long time.

It would be nice to even have a spin-off, "Devcore" sounds cool to me

I might be interested in making it happen, I mean more on the technical side of things.

I've been thinking about that a lot lately too as I've been doing a lot of tools and artist support stuff in my spare time. I think another forum would be a bit much but a new forum section called "Technical" I think would be great.

Well more than a forum I would dream for a proper website, not necessarily separated, but with proper page layout etc

MapCore Gaming Blog! -- Games journalism straight from the mouths of developers. The only rule being that contributors aren't allowed to write about their own product, unless it's some sort of retrospective/postmortem 6+ months down the line. I guess it would be an extension of the current "Features" section, presented more like a standalone ezine and with regular news posts as well as the more in-depth features. I'd read the hell out of it.

It is actually possible that I could extend things in that direction when I update our software in Q2, and have them appear in the sidebar. I know people can make threads about this stuff, but a slightly more formal format could make it nicer and more permanent. Food for thought.

    Make this happen please

I was already thinking about looking for a partner to write stuff with.

Alien 3 wasn't that bad. Especially considering Fincher had to make it without a finished script. It was Fox who kept meddling and made it an incoherent mess. I think you still can see some of Fincher's greatness in the movie. It's too bad he disowned it and wouldn't return for the quadrilogy box set. Can't blame him though. However, luckily for us, they made an Assembly Cut without him which makes it a much better movie overall. It completely changes many things and adds 25 minutes to the movie. For a list of changes read this. I recommended you watch this version. It's a good movie!

We can safely ignore Prometheus with it being a prequel and let's never mention Resurrection again. Personally, Alien 3 doesn't have to be ignored. But it would be cool to have the new one take place between 2 and 3. Bring Ripley/Hicks/Bishop back. Aliens ends with the sounds of a facehugger crawling on the ground anyway. Probably inconceivable though due to Ripley never mentioning anything in Alien 3 and their ages. Well, Ripley and Hicks could work but Bishop is too old. Seeing he was partly destroyed, you could go the puppet/cgi route. I don't know, I would love to see it though.

You would figure that people from here were all over this thread by now. The influence, design wise, of this franchise is huge. Regardless whether you like it or not. Then again, this franchise took some massive blows with that AVP crap and Prometheus. But hey, if Alien Isolation can prove that there's still life in it then surely Neill can too. I have faith in the guy. Let's just hope that Fox doesn't fuck it up.

Funny you posted this today. I was just thinking about how I never really got into CSGO despite countless of hours in Source. Sounds like a good excuse to return. Plus I miss the days when I played MOHAA on clanbase. Clan matches were awesome. It's sad though because people got so serious that it took all the fun out of it and I eventually left. I think I'm an average player but I'm not going to do training evenings and get bad mouthed for messing up in a match. Come on, it's a game. Let's have some fun!

PM is a pathological liar and deserves some heat for that. But what RPS did is just riding the hate train for clicks while cheap shooting him. They should be embarrassed and we should be too. Because after decades of false promises, who the fuck listens to PM anyway? You know the saying, fool me once....?

You know, come to think of it, in this day and age, there's really no reason to pre-order anyway. I might have it wrong, but for me, pre-ordering used to be about making sure you had physical copy on day one. Local retailers could run out, web shops weren't booming yet, the second hand market was cumbersome and digital distribution was in it's infancy. But now you've got limitless opportunities to secure a copy. Even exclusive DLC content will, most of the time, become available for cheap later on anyway. So why the fuck pre-order in the first place? I think it only makes sense for collector editions. You know, the kind they only make a few of.

I do play WH40K a couple of times a year. Used to play more back in the day. Still have a lot of unpainted stuff lurking somewhere.

Other board games we play on a more regular basis:

    - Bang!

    - Talisman

    - Dominion

    - Carcassonne

    - Grass

Would recommend any of these if you have a group of people and haven't tried them.

TBH I've never seen much point in pre-ordering. Too many games that just don't live up to the hype. By now it's a rare occasion that I buy a game on Day 1 actually. 2nd hand discounts that you mentioned and especially sales on Steam make me wait a few months and then get the game for a lot less nowadays. F2P games also have an effect on my perception of prices surely and I'm not saying all of this is a good thing, but it's how I feel and I'm probably not alone.

The second point which might be interesting to discuss is if this is a warning flag for AAA developers on current consoles. The question of whether an SP game with that kind of production value is sustainable.

Yes, good point about the warning flag. Same goes for pre-ordering. But now all of us should have been burned at least once. I'm not doing it anymore either, unless it's GTA. Also, the whole DLC thing has gotten seriously out of hand. Especially Ubisoft with it's 200 different versions at launch. Or even better, Evolve with it's clusterfuck of a marketing scheme.
