    Hey all!

I read a gamasutra article about this community and I would like to join and make some friends to discuss game (development) and learn from it

I'm a 23yr old girl from the Netherlands. I've finished my bachelors in Computer Science (VU) and am almost done with my masters Game Studies (UvA). I've been working for an IT company for 2 yrs (mainly Android but also some plugins) now where I've learned a lot more than just coding (working with svn, command-line, compatibility with windows+mac+linux et cetera). That might sound strange (didn't you learn those things in school?) but when you're really working in a production environment with a lot of people you take in different things than when you're making homework that is geared towards a specific program purpose. I'll gladly answer any question ^^ Excited to meet you all

    Welkom!

Is dat nou echt wat die game opleiding in Utrecht?

Well, I don't recognize what this guy is saying. Not that I have played a lot of MP but every time I did, I had no problem connecting to a server with active players.

The map has no design flaws...

    I didn't ask him for a critique...

    But I don't understand why..

    Just some friendly advice.

When you start a sentence with "The map has no design flaws", it comes of as arrogant. People will feel less motivated to check it out. Combine that with a lack of screenshots or information and you are not giving them any incentive to actually want to play it. You say it was meant for friends, which is fine, but don't share it here if that wasn't your intention in the first place. You say "I didn't ask him for a critique", however, as soon as you post something for all to see, you've already asked for critique. Seeing your responses in this thread and your own, I can only conclude that you are not really that open to constructive feedback. Factor in the appearance of arrogance, lack of effort, defensiveness and it's not difficult to understand why people think you come across as rude.

What Jackophant maybe wanted to say that a part of the community isn't very active, especially with the contest going on. Meaning that as one of the few giving feedback about almost everything on the contest, (these few people are mainly people who were there before the contest) he may feel like his movement to help other isn't as followed as it should, and that vivifying the community could reasonably be a good thing, and what he proposed was one way to do it, and surely not the only one.

That being said, I may have misinterpreted what he was saying, but it could be a base idea for the future of the community.

I didn't look at it that way but it's an interesting and very valid point even if you misinterpreted it. I constantly see the same people giving feedback. Not only in the contest forum, but overall. I also see some people producing a ton of worthwhile content (I'm looking at you @Castle). I think it's something that should be applauded and recognized. I'll propose this to the others.

In retrospect, it may cheapen the generally more professional atmosphere of mapcore, but gamification is quite popular and a good way to encourage people to be more involved. I'm sure a lot of people here probably wouldn't care for it and the community may be too small or not active enough, but since I've suggested it now I may as well provide examples:

gamebanana medals (couldn't find an exhaustive list of what they offer)

    stack overflow badges

This may also really need to be planned for in advance rather than shoehorned in at a later date...

This was proposed earlier and in different forms but it all got shot down. Even displaying the amount of likes or community reputation is removed. Honestly, I can't remember why, I would have to ask. Personally I would like to see some more titles, especially Staff titles because it's easier for people to identify who they should approach with questions. But community reputation or similar things like that are fair game as far as I'm concerned. I suppose the reasoning behind this was to avoid elitism. Personally, I find it easier to judge people this way but that's probably the exact reason why others don't like it.

I see; hope they get restored soon :)

In another issue, I'm not getting emails when someone quotes or mentions me in a post. The "notification" and "email" are both checked in my settings and I double checked just to make sure. You quoted me here in this post but i did not get any email to notify me; only when I logged in i got the red notification (in the old mapcore system, i used to get email notification normally).

    Is this a bug?

We need @Thrik to answer this.

Not sure how this would be received, but (long term obv) what would the process be to implement a mapcore achievement system?

I guess in all honesty it would be like fps/gamebanana...

What do you mean by this?

What happened to signatures? can't find them in the profile settings; temporary or permanent removal? :???:

    It's temporarily disabled.

So is that it, just a re-release? The game made its way on a weekly Italian news magazine "the international", where they gather and translate news from all the most important news outlets, so that's general news... I couldn't read the article but thought it came about because of a sequel.

Remasters are so hot right now.....

Didn't the second one flop? It certainly didn't create the buzz the first one did.

He's stating an awful lot of things as facts. I'm not saying he doesn't have a point but it's mostly fanboy talk without any evidence to back it up. Besides, it's the Valve News Network. That's like FOX not being biased.

Yes, it's becoming more and more annoying. We've talking about this in the Staff forum but we need @Thrik for a explanation of all the technical mumbo jumbo.

I was with you bro, but things seem to be shaping up quite nicely. Check out this preview of the MP. It could still be a giant turd of course, but I like what I've seen and read so far.

I just realized this. There are two expansions planned for The Witcher 3. Which should equal The Witcher 2 in length for the bargain price of 25 euros. That's less than the amount that Bungie/Activision is charging for Destiny's first two expansions. Which both feature a couple of maps, skins and dance animations. Fucking capitalism.

So Mike died. Not how I expected. Still, sad to see him go. Hank finally figured it out. I wonder what will happen next. I take it he will pressure Skylar but she can't say anything without incriminating herself and thus losing custody over her children. Maybe he'll try Pinkman seeing as how his guilt is eating him up. The prison massacre was awesome. Reminded me of Blood in Blood Out. Or Bound by Honor depending on where you live. With 7 episodes to go, I'm worried where it will end. Now it's time that Jessie finds out about Brock and stuff. I think it would be justice if he kills Walt. Because he ruined his life. I never expected Jessie, based on the first season, to be the voice of reason. The one with a conscience. Superb writing overall. I'll probably finish it somewhere this week. What a run. It's not the best show I every saw but it's close.

I heard it costs 3 million per episode to make. If that's true (afraid to Google in case of spoilers) I don't understand why. They shot it where they got good tax benefits. It's usually more character driven. There aren't any big set pieces, loads of action, CGI or whatever. Now, I understand nothing is free and the overall quality is excellent, but 3 million? Come on!

Fuck... I kinda gave up on it after a few hours. I know it gets better after you get to the top of the learning curve, I need to force myself to get there. That's the only problem I see with this game really, if you have to force yourself to enjoy it, it sorta already failed in my book.

But like I said... I mean to give it another shot after I complete Batman.

Yes and no. Yes, it can be frustrating to learn. It can put you off. You can misunderstand it, call it bad design and so on. But no, once you master it, once it falls into place, it's pure fucking genius. It makes you go through a range of emotions. But believe me, nothing feels better then figuring it out and beating it. Well, maybe pussy, but that's a different topic.
