Not sure what to think of the art direction, either. Seems they have gone for the blizzard look for some reason. Been looking forward to this for a long time and so far... disappoint. Here's hoping it improves over time.
I'm probably overthinking it. But to me, it seems to be done on purpose. In the trailer, the Space Marines really get their asses kicked. Their skinny look makes them appear even more vulnerable. Keeping in mind the ending of the previous game (including DLC) it's understandable that this is the Blood Ravens darkest hour.
This also ties in with what we see and what's said in the trailer. They are looking up at a statue of an authority figure and they then try to withstand the blast. To me, this refers to previously mentioned betrayal within their ranks and their fight against the taint of Chaos.
Then we see the battle and their everlasting foes try to finish the job. All seem to die but you see the main character smiling because it's a good death. They defied Chaos and died in glory fighting the enemies of the Imperium for the everlasting Emperor.
Oh, and I really like the art direction.
