Believe it or not, I took a week off from work. I launched ragemapping.com and id-tech5.com, made a Facebook page and a chatchannel all because they said the editor would ship at launch. Silly me huh?

I know I said I was going to buy this, but I didn't. I tried the demo and it's not a good game. It's actually pretty bad. Well, what a waste of time

Did anybody enjoy the game?

Is anybody even remotely interested in mapping for this game? It's been 6 months and still no editor or DLC. The forums at Bethesda don't see a lot of traffic and you can pick this title up for under 20 euro at play.com. I think it's rather safe to say that this has been a flop.

They should throw this on Kickstarter as well!

":1181omn1]The thing with recent Aliens games is that Aliens are now cannon fodder, whereas in the movies a single Alien can kill you and all your mates. And that’s something AvP1 managed to get right, one of those fuckers would get you killed, It’s just impossible to make a good Aliens game in the Call of Duty era, scripted events and over the top action is not that this universe is about.
I must say, even though I've been here for a short time, your comments are always very perceptive. I completely forgot how difficult the original AVP was. Especially since you couldn't save! So yes, it's a shame. The aliens are supposed to be ruthless and efficient killing machines/hunters and not some random target practice. They cut the power remember

But that I think has little to do with the COD era. Alien Resurrection and both abominations called AVP 1 en 2 already degraded these once scary horrors. Good points about the location as well. There should be nothing left and if you really want to nitpick, how the hell is it possible that the Sulaco is infested with aliens? How did they get there and most important, who did they impregnate?
After seeing these latest videos my enthusiasm is beginning to decline.

Definitely not on par with the work showed here, but these are some of mine Quake 3 experiments that never saw the light of day.

Carmack said on his Quakecon keynote that it is possible to create your own megatextures, but it would be so much hassle, that he doesn't think more then two people would even bother. This alone, severly limits your possibilities.
I also talked with Method, who works as a Levedesigner at Id, about editing for the game. He said it would work best with Modo [like Serenius already said]. I have no information about what other programs are supported. He also said most design is done in Modo instead of Idstudio.
There is still no word about the 64.exe which was promised on launch day. I think that if they wait too long, interest will rapidly diminish. Also, they haven't commented on anything since Rage which has received a fair share of criticism.

Apologies for that, occasionally a few slip by the radar.
I approved your last one of the repeat posts; hopefully you've crossed the threshhold now where you should be able to function normally.Post approval is doing wonders for bot spam, but I wonder if it might be a wee bit aggressive right now. :\ I'll bring it up in the moderator forum. Sorry for the delay! No problem, thanks for the quick reply. I agree that post approval is a very effective way against bots. But you also disable the PM system and have no contact information on the site. In case of problems, like I was having, there is simply no way to contact the staff. My reply on the welcome's email was a gamble since those are normally no reply emailadresses.
Anyway, thanks again for the quick response. Now let's get back to my topic here.

I've been following this game for a long time. Always forget about it and then something triggered my memory and I looked it up again. It's good to read they switched from Unity to Unreal. The screens look much better now. Doesn't matter to me how this turns out, I'm going to buy it.

I would love to play this online. But with all these great games coming out, there is just no excuse for me to get it. Mp would take up too much time. I still got to finish Warhammer, Rage, Deus Ex and I have to get Arkham City, Uncharted and Skyrim.

I had a difficult time trying to get it to work on the PC. Five days of reading forums and eventually installing a patch, made it possible to get started.
The visuals and some of the levels are stunning. Excellent design and it made my jaw drop several times. Unfortunately, the level design itself is bad. Each map conveniently ends right where it started. It eliminates backtracking but it looks really stupid. Sometimes, you can even see the main objective right from where you start, except you have to take a 20 minute detour just to get there.
Everything has invisible walls and/or is clipped. There is nothing to explore. You can't really move a lot in most places, you can't even jump of a cliff. Hell, you can't even fall to your death in most places. This is basically an onrails shooter.
Driving is fun in the beginning, but you have to backtrack the same routes, with the same respawning enemies, at the same exact points, to same locations, for so many times that it really becomes repetitive and you just try and get it over with as quickly as possible. Same goes for the maps. However impressive some might be, all the bigger locations are visited twice. The first time you go from A to B and the second time you go from B to A. This makes the maps really predictable. If you think about it, you can cut the game in half content wise, since it's just repeating itself.
Megatexture does look great and no repeating textures make for some pretty pictures. Except, it means that all the textures upclose are very blurry to say the least and nothing in the world [asset wise] can move. Hell, even simple cans are superglued to the table/desk/whatever. The open world look is misleading, since you can go nowhere and the world consists out of 2 town maps, 2 outside maps and a dozen of maps you keep revisiting while still taking up 21 gb.
The quest system is downright awkward at times and I especially like the fact you can choose to accept quests, even though [with some] if you refuse, you can't continue the game. Not to mention that some of them are bugged or really retarded to say the least. Especially when you just visit the first town. You get sent from one place to the next for atleast 15 minutes before actually being able to get the quest.
Racing is actually quite cool, but again, only a couple of maps, limited race options, limited tuning options and no real benefits make them quite useless. Yes it's fun for a couple of races but you just don't have any motivation to keep doing it.
There is simply no real story. You wake up, are given an gun and play errand boy for +/-13 hours. The authority is bad, since everybody keeps reminding you of that and you have no choice other then to help the resistance. No explanations, no questions, just do as your told.
Isn't there anything good to say, except the visuals? Well yes, the different ammo types are a lot of fun. You can build cool stuff to help you kill your enemies in variety of ways and gunplay feels excellent. Enemy AI is good and you will have a lot of fun shooting. Too bad the entire game is far too easy and that every mutant encounter comes down to holding of the waves.
In the end, Rage is a dumbed down, unbalanced and mediocre shooter at best. It's unbelievable that this is the result of 7 years of work and a game of the legendary Id. For me, it was a HUGE disappointment.

Again, great advice guys!
Rick_D: I apparently don't have the special edition. Are these the videos you are referring to?
e-freak: I thought I knew a little, but apparently, I have a lot to learn about industry positions, workflows, etc.
I've downloaded the UDK. Reinstalled UT 3 and I'll start with learning the editor. Those video tutorials I mentioned earlier should keep me occupied for a while. We'll take it from there and see what it is I really like to do

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Thanks for all the advice guys. So apparently, it's not that common to start with drawing and stuff? I want to do a map for the upcoming Doom 4. The game is still some time away so that gives me room to learn. I heard that Id Software works with Modo. Is it better to learn that program if you want to do a project for their game?
I own the Unreal 3 special edition, so I should have those videos. Good advice, I'll look into that.
Puddy: Oh, if that's the case, freelancing might be difficult. Here in the Netherlands, options are limited so that's why I said freelance. We'll see what happens. First, I got a long road ahead. Let's see how that goes

Hello,
I'm new here. My name is Johnny and I go by the nick 'SpronyvanJohnson'. This site was recommended to me as THE place to get [professional] advice and I could really use some.
For years I've fantasizing about becoming a freelance Level Designer/Environment Artist. Now I've decided to finally pursue that dream. I used to mess around with Gtkradiant and Quake 3, but I made nothing worth mentioning. I do however, have some basic experience with editing in general.
Google tells me that a Level Designer takes the assets that environment artist has created and assembles them into an environment that we can all play in. They design gameplay elements, create scripted events and test game play. An Environment Artist is someone who builds the assets that go into the environment. They model, often texture and sometimes light their environments. I basically want to do both.
I've also read, that before starting with an editor, you should have a basic design understanding. It would help if you can draw and color your concepts so that you learn about composition, color and design. When you've 'mastered' that, you should pick the 3D and 2D software you want to work with and learn those. The final step would be choosing an engine and editor to create content for. Which leads to my first question: Is the information and order mentioned above correct?
If so, then I know I would want to work with Maya. Browsing different forums has taught me there is no clear winner between most programs. A friend of mine already works with Maya and that's the reason I picked it. Because in case of problems, I'm not solely dependent on the Internet for help. Due to a webdesign course I took, I already own a license for Photoshop, so that's a no brainer. Engine wise I would go for Unreal since it's the most licensed engine in the world and the UDK is free to use. Which leaves the basic design understanding open.
I'm from The Netherlands and I've searching for an appropriate drawing course to take here. I'm just not sure what to pick. Do I need to go with interior design, landscapes, architecture, etc? Also, do I need to start on paper or is it better to start with a tablet and make digital drawings? My wife already bought me a Wacom tablet so it would not cost me any additional money. I'm still looking for the right book, article, article to help me educate myself in color use and basic design and composition. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
That brings me to my fourth and final question: Is this the best direction to take? Again, I would appreciate any feedback, pointers, links or information you are willing to share with me. Also, I'm not sure if this is the right forum to ask this, but it looked like the most appropriate one.
I apologize for starting my stay here with a long post filled with questions. Regardless if you reply or not, I would like to thank you for time.
Sincerely,
SpronyvanJohnson
