  • Interview for QA position

I've managed to get through to the third stage interviews at a prestigous game development studio for a Games Tester position and they want me to come in to the studio to meet them.

However, they've just told me that it's a 4 month contract with no guarantees of a permanent position afterwards. The salary is much lower than what I'm currently on (in a full-time perm position) and I'd have to relocate to Edinburgh from Leeds and find a place to rent - which is about a 4 hour drive north. Oh and I doubt my girlfriend would want to leave her job, so there's that.

The salary doesn't bother me too much, it's the fact I might end up back at square one... but with that studio on my CV.

I was just wondering what you guys thought, is this too good of an opportunity to miss if I want to build a career in the industry?

I work in a different industry but what you are describing is what we call disposable assets. Meaning people with throw away contracts for crappy pay with no possibilities whatsoever that are fed the worst kind of work that even the cleaning crew doesn't want to do.

Not that there's anything wrong with testing. Lots of people started out that way. But if it's very low pay and temporary it's probably something that not a lot of people want to do (including steady testers). Removed studio's name is a big name but this would add little to your resume. A future employer being impressed with 4 months of temp work is highly unlikely. I would not even consider it under gunpoint especially taking your social situation in account.

Trust the people above and forget about it. I do applaud your dedication for even considering it though. That's the kind of stuff that will get you there eventually.

Any updates yet? I think this would be a good game for my LAN parties.

Well, I bought Witcher 1 ages ago, so i guess the least I can do is try it for a couple hours. Anyway, thanks brosefs!

One very important thing: Use this guide. I despise using guides but this game gives you no warning whatsoever. Meaning that entire quests fail because you accidentally progressed in a main quest. You'll not be notified of this. I had to play several parts over again, costing me hours, just due to continuing the wrong quest at that time. So scout, explore, start quests but keep a close eye on which you complete and when you complete them. Save often. It will come in handy.

I too tried playing The Witcher 1 before the 2nd came out but it's pretty clunky

Also the game lenght turns me off :s It's about 41h average to clear the Main Story only!!

Ain't nobody got time for that! So it's still sitting in my Steam library... Another steam sale I will likely never finish.

I'll answer your question now that I've overcome my disappointment in you Helder!

It's not necessary to play it in order to enjoy the second. You would be missing out on a great game though, even if it's time consuming, unstable and unfair at points. It's still better than most RPG's I've ever played. It's also the only game ever, that managed to make me feel guilty about bad decisions. The only game ever, that made me really think about the consequences. It's kinda like being married. If you do the right things, it's heaven, if you mess up, there's hell to pay.

Also, the original gives you a ton of background and you can take your save with you to The Witcher 2. Choices you made will effect certain parts of the second. You can look it up on the Wiki but I can't really saying anything without spoiling it for you.

If you do decide to give it a go, hit me up.
