  • Kickstarter, how and what to do?

    • Sprony
    • August 18, 2014 at 12:01 PM

    Hey Sjonsson,

That's good news man. I wish you guys the best of luck. I'm not someone who has or knows anyone that has run a Kickstarter for their project. However, I am an avid follower and I've seen a lot of projects come by. Here are some observations:

    • Don't sell the idea but sell the project. Show people your progress. Also, the project has to look good enough to convince people it's likely to succeed. Posting concepts won't get you there.
    • Expect nothing but prepare for everything. In other words, have funding goals ready beforehand.
    • Include Kickstarter rewards (pledges) and keep them realistic.
    • UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE. I can't stress this enough.
    • Add a convincing pitch video narrated by someone who speaks proper English and has a pleasant voice.
    • Be realistic in what you want to achieve. This goes for the pitch but also for the goals and rewards (as stated above).
    • Don't make promises you can't keep.

Regarding banks, if you choose The Netherlands I would go for ABN Amro. I've been a customer at most banks here but for me ABN Amro is really the best. Excellent service, low cost and never any issues.

    Good luck!

I saw this last Saturday and I absolutely loved it. For me, it's the best Marvel movie thus far. Hands down! I enjoyed every freaking minute of it. Very well crafted. Kinda felt like a modern space opera a la Star Wars. Yes, highly recommended.

You are welcome Seir. Even as only a gamer I found it very interesting. It's written in a way so that's easy to understand for everybody and not just designers. Hell, if I keep spell checking these I might actually be able to talk a long during development chats

Been offered a job at Ubisoft to work on The Division which is awesome, but the pay is less than what I'm currently on, it's a 6 month fixed contract, and I would have to relocate. So...hmm...not sure what to do. Very tough call to make!

That sounds like a sucker's deal to me.

  • Do you enjoy your job in the games industry?

    • Sprony

    Quote from PogoP

I'm just curious, because I kinda feel a bit burnt out at the moment, like I'm not really enjoying my job, and I've felt it at the past 2 places I've worked. Making games has always been a huge passion of mine, but just recently I feel as if I've lost that passion during the hours of 9-5... When I get home I suddenly feel quite inspired to work on my own stuff. Therefore I end up staying up pretty late because I kinda wanna put off the inevitable.

I remember that I used to feel so lucky to be working in this industry, I could make art all day and remember thinking that I should consider myself lucky because I could be stacking shelves at Tesco or whatever.. But these days I have actually been considering what I would do if I wasn't in the games industry.

Let me add an observation from an outsider:

Regardless of what you do or in what industry you work, the novelty of it all eventually wears off. That's why people are constantly looking for promotions or other jobs. Because, after all, variety is the spice of the life. The fact that you just switched jobs and are already feeling that way is quite alarming. You wouldn't be the first designer who grew tired of the industry. That's were a lot of Indie's came from. The problem is that not everybody can take that route because bills have to be paid.

So if I were you, I would do some serious soul searching and number crunching to answer the question:"What do I want to do with my life and is it possible?". Write it down, calculate what you need, do a risk assessment, etc. Life is too short to waste. However, chasing dreams doesn't necessarily mean you have to leave your job. Remember that work is just that, work and lots of people don't like their jobs. It's something you have to do, it's not something you really want to do. Sure, there are people out there that successfully made their hobby their job and props to them. But the reality is that a lot of people can't do that.

I for one, have a very good and well paying job which I absolutely don't care about at all. I'm good at it but it's just something I have to do to provide for my family. The time where I could take risks is gone. So how do I keep motivated? Simple, do other stuff that makes you happy. My job allows me to finance my hobbies, plus I have great and fun colleagues. So time spent there isn't horrible, it's actually fun even if the work isn't. During quite times I have the opportunity to prepare interviews or articles for the Core or I'm looking for deals to enlarge my retro collection and so on.

So even if you feel fatigue but decide to stay, motivated yourself with your own projects outside of work. Pump out scenes, start a design blog, start a mod with other Core members, try to make a indie title with people and so on. You get the point. In the mean time you can keep an eye open for a job opportunity at a studio you would really like to work for. But realize that you will eventually grow tired of that job as well. Some people are fine doing the same thing for decades and others need to be pushed, so do that, push yourself. Even at work you can push yourself to learn new things. Find colleagues that can challenge you or projects that are far outside your comfort zone.

Anyway, just remember to keep your head up, push through the day by day bullshit and motivate yourself by doing the stuff that makes you happy.

Went to the premiere yesterday. The theater was packed. Everybody was laughing and clapping throughout the movie because it's really a solid piece of entertainment. It's by far the best of the trilogy. It has better pacing, better action sequences, it's more coherent throughout and has better performances overall. I'm also glad they stepped away from the slapstick humor which became a bit too much in part 2. There's more humor in this one but it's better and actually more clever. Snipes, Banderas and Gibson really steal the show. Especially Banderas is hilarious. Only downside is some really crappy CGI. So in short, if you like 80's action, go see this.

PS: I wasn't happy with the PG13 rating but really, there's so much violence in this flick that I didn't even miss it. I'm sure we'll have an uncut BR release.

You know I got nothing but love for you Puddy but I think that reveal trailer really didn't do the game any justice. I actually found it pretty lame and annoying. I'm gonna wait for some proper footage before I judge. I mean, I'm done with zombies too (Dux said it best). However, The Last of Us proved to me that there's still live in that setting as long as you use it well. I had the same with the movie Warm Bodies. The trailer made me cringe but it turned out to be a pretty clever and entertaining movie that did something original with an overused setting.

Oh crap. Would she have died if you hadn't taken her to the doc?

No. Although her reaction was far from normal and it is something we have to monitor for the next shots, it eventually wasn't life threatening. Her body reacted to the shot by basically freezing her and putting her in a deep almost coma like state. Only after severe stimulants did she give the smallest of reactions, like twitching a finger or something. This lasted 4 hours. The funny thing is that the moment we arrived at the emergency room and I went up to the counter she opened her eyes and started laughing. What a troll. Then when the doctor examined her she crapped on the thermometer.

Glad she's ok, Sprony! Can't imagine how scary that would have been D:

Thanks man. Well, it honestly felt as if I grew five years older in one day.

    Quote from Minos

    Oh shit, that's scary.

My cat's been sick for the past few days and I barely got any sleep those nights (since his breathing is really bad it sounds like he's gonna suffocate anytime). He's better now, but goddamn, I can't imagine how stressful it must be to have a baby.

I guess once they start understanding a few words it gets better though right?

I certainly hope so. My baby had the same as your cat. Hospital said it was normal because she was adjusting to breathing actual air and that all babies do that. But I couldn't simply accept that. The first few nights I didn't sleep at all. I just said next to crib checking if she was still breathing.

I'm told it gets better the older they get. Less fragile and more resilient. Plus, you have more experience as a parent and worry less. But yeah, them being able to talk sure would make things easier. Good luck with your cat btw. I have four and I love them like crazy. So yeah, I wouldn't sleep well either.

    Quote from AlexM

holy shit that's scary. I'm pretty sure I would freak out pretty hard.

You can't have that unless your partner remains calm. One of the two has to remain focused on what to do. So even if you feel that panic and pressure, somehow, like genetically or something, your parent instinct kicks in and you become a man with a mission. At least that's what happened to me.
