Yeah same, I'm trying to not buy new games until I finish my current backlog

This is so hard and so true. I have a tendency to be weak in that regard. I hear you guys talking about Shadow of Mordor being great and this voice in me goes 'BUY IT NOW YOU NEED IT YOU WANT IT'. Same goes for this one and Far Cry 4 and so on. While I still haven't gotten around to so many other games I've bought. If I just finish other games first I could get these new games for half the price they are now but the voice doesn't care. It must be now. Luckily though, I'm broke as fuck. I just have to get through the Steam Autumn sale and all will be alright until I get money again. Then I need to stay strong. Maybe we should form a support group

The shared doc, send me an email address and I'll give you access.

I want to thank you all for sharing your thoughts. I spend the last hour or so going through the pages and I picked some things that received the most likes. I got some excellent ideas out of this and I'll be contacting most of you shortly. I think we can do something special together. To be continued!

    Review Round Up:

    Quote
    • CVG: 8/10 - Forget about the Resident Evil connection: The Evil Within stands alone and still manages to feel relevant, despite far more sophisticated contemporaries.
    • OXM: 8/10 - Evil Within grafts Resident Evil 4's gold standard survival action to a far less forgiving world. That it even comes close to matching Capcom's masterpiece is cause to celebrate. And sweat. And quiver.
    • GamesRadar: 3.5/5 - Despite letting some of its most compelling aspects die off, The Evil Within is still worth a shot for bringing some unique ideas in the first place, and giving us a new way to think about survival horror.
    • VideoGamer: 8/10 - At times it feels like a Mikami megamix. It's not unusual for directors in either film or games to recall past glories, and few do it better than Mikami. Even though this isn't his best, The Evil Within has enough magic to make it a worthy investment.
    • Joystiq: 2.5/5 - It manages a few moments of inspiration, but their scarcity makes them feel like fortunate accidents rather than deliberate elements of the overall design. It's covered in blood, but the only thing truly horrifying about The Evil Within is how disappointing it is.
    • IGN: 8.7/10 - While its story ends up buckling under its own ambition, there is little here that takes away from the joy of experiencing survival horror under the steady hand of a master of the craft.
    • Game Informer: 9/10 - Horror fans shouldn't let the disappointing story deter them one bit, however. The Evil Within excels at keeping your palms sweaty while delivering a harrowingly rewarding gameplay trial.
    • Escapist: 3/5 - The Evil Within is a noble attempt at bringing back classic survival horror, but it could have learned a thing or two from games that aren't almost ten years old. It has its moments of brilliance, scattered through periods of antagonizing design.
    • Metro: 6/10 - Rather than the future of survival horror this is merely a retread of its defining moments, and even then it rarely manages to equal what has gone before - let alone exceed it.
    • ShackNews: 6/10 - Resident Evil fans will have a serious case of déjà vu when playing The Evil Within. It offers much of the thrills and creepy environments that make the series so enticing, along with some of its frustrations.
    • Polygon: 6.5/10 - There's something to be said for respecting your past successes and building off of them, but The Evil Within is only ever completely successful at half of that equation.
    • SixthAxis: 8/10 - Despite borrowing a lot of well-worn themes from other games and movies (Hello, creepy shop mannequins from Silent Hill), The Evil Within feels fresh and exciting. It's easy to recommend to fans of the original Dead Space and the earlier Resident Evil games.
    • GameTrailers: 9/10 - The Evil Within is a survival-horror masterpiece. Anyone concerned this is just another action game soaked in blood needn't worry. Tense pacing, stunning atmosphere, and terrifying enemy encounters come together to create a journey you may never forget.

When I posted this I would never have guessed that there would be so much interest. The shared doc already has a list of people and their skills. It's great to see so many jump aboard and share their ideas but you can't steer a ship with that many captains. I'm unsure on how to proceed. Suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thoughts I had:

    • Pick one of the suggestions, post that as the mod we are going to develop and see who wants to join that.
    • Come up with something on my own and hope people are interested in that.
    • Going the other way around. Pick an engine and a genre, see who wants to work on that, form a team and discuss with them what we are going to make.
    • Drop the whole 'test' mini mod idea and directly start with what we want to make.
    • Open a poll asking the Core what mod they would like the see. Listing genres, engines and games and pick to most favorite as the Core's pet project and take it from there.

I always thought that Hurg was the little boy that Thrik kept in his basement?

I knew Mapcore as that place with all those HL fanboys. I love the games but I didn't care for the modding scene. I was heavily into Idtech especially mapping for Quake 3. But then the big bad monster came to eat all Idtech communities so Sprony had to flee and found refuge here. Unfortunately I was considered a filthy foreigner and it took you all a couple of years to forgive my sins, accept my presence and grant me a visa. I think it's safe to say that I'm fully integrated now. Which might change soon since I'm currently trying very hard to bring my family over

  • Mapcore's UE4 Whitebox Challenge Feedback Thread

    • Sprony
    • October 12, 2014 at 9:19 AM

    Hey guys,

Now that the challenge is all done I want to ask for some constructive criticism. Simply because I want to improve future challenges and mainly due to the fact that I'm not really that satisfied with how it turned out. For the record, you guys and the results are amazing but the challenge itself could have been better. My points:

    • I think we shouldn't have gone with community voting. Chris his map is amazing but it took too much spotlight. A panel of judges, even for a challenge, should be better for the future. Or, if there are no prizes involved, simply don't do any kind of voting. Because too many good entries got ignored.
    • We should have had playtesting. But due to the game not being finished yet and my limited knowlegde of UE4 I didn't get this of the ground. It's a whitebox challenge but voting was mostly done on visuals which should have been based on gameplay. This doesn't give the right impression for LD's out there (thanks Frie).
    • I was too exciting about getting emails from Epic. I should have been more careful in what I said about that because it ultimately led to disappointment with me and others as well.

That's it for me, feel free to share!

We've been trying to get rid of this house for 4 years and now I did all I could to make it as attractive as possible for buyers. Literally blood, sweat and tears were spilled on this and yesterday we had a open house and nobody came. Fucking depressed right now

Yes, nearing the last couple of weeks I'll rent a server so you all can playtest your maps.

That looks huge. Remember that average pathway sizes in Quake 3 are 128 or 192 width. Tier levels are an average of 192 high.

Apologies; I've just read over all of the literature about the contest (Facebook, announcement article, this and the other thread) and can't see a link anywhere to sign up. Have I missed it or is creating a post signing up?

No, my bad. Signing up is making a post on this forum with your map name and real name plus nick. You've already done that.

I thought this was about the Mapcore Moderation team, and Sprony was going to tell everyone about the weird stuff we do in the trees together at night. Thank God he didn't tell everyone about the weird stuff we do in the trees together at night, that would have been really awkward.

I don't think we should make a generic FPS. I think we should go more in a Aliens or Dear Esther type direction, more of a focused experience that does something fucking crazy we can all be passionate about. More interesting that way. Single-player a must. Seems like it's gotta be UE4, Source2 ain't out...

If there's one thing I know about this community, it's that we can make shit.

Dammit Shawn, we all agreed that what happened in the trees stays in the trees. You don't see me going around telling everyone you can suck a tennis ball through 10 meters of garden hose now are you?

    Quote from kinggambit

Do you think you could make the process transparent for newbies by letting us shadow along and see how a collaboration process would work?

I get the process of creating a level by myself, but I'm clueless as hell how a group of people streamline and exchange info and pass along work to each other all under 1 map file.

If anything comes of this it will be as transparent as possible. It's a community thing and we're not going to be all Doctor Evil in his hidden lair working on his secret experiments. It's also a great way of attracting new people to the Core. It has to be accessible to everyone and promoted as we do with the articles and interviews.

If it's source, count me down to help with layouts and scripting.

    I should say...

The FIRST project should be something as simple as a Half-Life 2 level. I know I bent shawn's ear about this a while back and I think it still holds true.

If you can't come together as a team and finish something simple like a standard Half-life 2 level (or Farcry level ect.). You prob won't be able to do much as a group.

I would urge everyone to keep this in mind.

Yes, the shared Google doc already has a lot of ambitious ideas. When I started this thread I first wanted to test the waters. Clearly there is a lot of interest. So now it's all about seeing who's willing to commit so we can form a team. I would strongly advise not to jump in immediately. We need to get to know each other. We need to see if we can work together and we need to see if we can get stuff done. A small mini Half Life 2 mod would be a great exercise for this. About the length of the original Half Life Uplink demo.

Hello. I would like to participate but there is very short time to get familiar with everything (new editor, new game..) so the question is: Can the deadline be postponed? like to the end of December?

Unfortunately not. Everything has to be judged as well and done before the holidays start.
