I only played the entire (?) HL saga a few years ago.

Before that, I had to share the computer with my siblings, when most of the time we could only use it for a predetermined amount of time (nonsense rules). I think that's why I liked to spend so much time in the LAN houses... That shared computer was very, very slow, and didn't help me to get interested in mapping previously because it was a disaster when I wanted to load any game or something alike. Add to that a big spoon of dirty dust extracted from the old sister who thinks she could name what could and couldn't be installed on the machine, and the most useless computer gets born.

Anyway, playing Half Life for the first time over a decade later of its release, the game could still deliver an amazing and unforgettable experience for me. It was also interesting to notice things there that modern shooters apply to their designs nowadays.

I was a firefox fanboy, but some time ago when I started to write some text, it lagged a lot and made me look like a retard that couldn't write a whole sentence. So I changed to chrome. Gotta check if that bug was fixed.

    [Feedback]

    Thank you, Chris!

I appreciate and agree with all you said.

I didn't feel very comfortable of applying the art and lighting there, because I was aware that being part of a game that should be playtested, lots of things could be changed/ iterated. I would avoid any aesthetic element. But, as I was requested to show off lighting and shaders in Unity, I ended up doing that.

So I believe that in the end I wasn't so crazy of thinking that applying those things in a whiteboxed phase wasn't a good idea...

Is this presentation in 3D better now? More readable, isn't it? ;P

    Broken Bridge

Hi guys, I'm looking for your feedback here.

Recently I was requested to build something in Unity, so I've whiteboxed a small level in the engine to demonstrate some lighting and shader usage (post-processing and optimization as well but the former could easily harm the latter, so don't consider them here).

Even though I started with a daylight scene, baking lightmaps using Bioshock Infinite as a reference for the light and shadow tones, I later on decided to change for a nighttime because I thought that way the light usage would be more evident.

So, I ended up creating a level set in an outdoor area and during the very night. (I'm not sure if that was the best decision to make because I guess it made things more difficult ).

To help to communicate possible team members about the level in question, I did a sketch and wrote a one page level design doc to outline the current storyline/ context, what the level design goal was and how that should be played:

    [Blocked Image: http://www.anselmo.gd/temp/broken_bridge/brokenbridge_LDD_.png][Blocked Image: http://www.anselmo.gd/temp/broken_bridge/brokenbridge_sketch_.png]

I've got three questions for you all:

    1) Is it really possible to light a level and achieve GREAT results, even though ALL you have is blocked out/ whiteboxed geometry (no props, no artistically-created textures etc)?

    2) How could I improve the lighting in this scene?

Take a look at the screenshots below or download the executable here (~25mb) to play it.

    3) What exactly do you understand as "shader usage"?

I'm not an environment artist, but I got some diffuse textures that fitted the level's theme and created their normal maps afterwards. To conclude, I created materials in Unity to receive those textures and applied them accordingly. With that, I believe I could prove that, providing the right textures, I was able to create the materials and apply them to the scene.

I don't know if I'll include it in my folio in the future, but I'm sure there's an opportunity to improve things here.

This is very important to me and I'm really looking forward to any feedback you can give (even opening my eyes to how much I suck would be ok, I guess). I'm currently available in the market and doing projects on my own, so I count on you guys to give me some pointers on how to improve my craft

    Thank you so much!

There's a weird wall corner near the central choke point/ bridge/ corridor that could receive a retouch

That narrow mid corridor is good but at the same time it's very risky to get in there. Easy to get flanked and killed. Will the walls around it be spammable? A nagev can be the king there!

Leaving the T spawn and going to the right, there's a cornered area with a few boxes. IMHO there's too much empty space there.

Overall, the map plays very well it was very fun to test it today!

The feeling I got after playing several rounds today is that T suffer a lot to reach the bomb sites. In fact, I can't recall of a single time when the T planted the bomb (though I couldn't stay until the end of the playtesting session). The CTs push too soon, so I would suggest to add more cover for the T to leave the respawn point and have more chances to complete their objective.

Also, I noticed that CTs often owned the Ts through three different routes, lol.

I also liked how this map played and I think it has a lot of potential. Good theme!

I couldn't watch the video. 5 mins in, no gameplay. Jumped further on the video, didn't see anything but a moving controller icon onscreen shaking like a dancing butt. This is not a game. Blargh

    Hey guys!
I know some of you are not used to play indie games, but if that's the case, I can assure you that Monaco is a completely different beast.
I've been playtesting, bug reporting and providing useful feedback for the devs of this 2010 IGF winner since the first batch of beta testers, and later on I became one of the "Beta VIPs" and got credited (yay). Check the credits list and look for me, lol.

Apart from having a very distinguishable art style with a camera perspective that resembles that Pac-Man, you can choose one of the 8 possible different classes and play as singleplayer or up to 4 co-op thieves in your team. They play very differently:

    Quote
    • The Locksmith: Blue-collar infiltration expert
    • The Lookout: She can see and hear everything... a natural leader
    • The Pickpocket: A hobo with a monkey and a penchant for crime
    • The Cleaner: A silent psychopath... Jack The Ripper in pink
    • The Mole: Big and dumb... likes to tunnel
    • The Gentleman: He doesn't always wear a disguise, but when he does, he looks fantastic
    • The Hacker: Armies of viruses shut down security... a modern day warlock
    • The Redhead: Manipulative and murderous... a lady always gets what she wants

This is indeed one of the most fun and best couch games I've ever played, and I'd recommend it in a heartbeat! If you are a fan of performing heists, stealing lots of loot using different tools to knock-out/ kill guards, and specially enjoying when that heist gets out of control and makes you want to punch your friend on the face but you are too busy laughing your ass off, man, this game is for you!
Add me on steam and let's steal Monaco! (or die miserably)
