I don't see anything different about Gmail than Yahoo (I have emails on both), I didn't think that many people used it to be honest. You also need to submit your phone number to them for "verification" reasons just to have a new address now... Ridiculous in my opinion.

Regardless, I would personally get my own domain that goes along with my folio site.

Have you setup the projection cage properly? In the RTT window under the 'Projection Mapping' section where you select your highpoly geometry for your cage setup, click the 'Options' button. Enable 'ray miss check' and do test render. Anything that shows up as red is being missed by the cage and needs to be tweak properly. Do another test render but un-check 'use cage' this time, see if you get less missed rays.

Looking at the model, I can tell your smoothing groups need to be setup properly. Any of the gradients that are on your lowpoly model will be rendered to your normals. For round objects like a cylinder, you want those gradients on the rounded areas. However, you don't want them on the flat areas.

Judging from the screen, it looks like your model only has 1 smoothing group, this is what causing those ugly gradients. Assign one smoothing group to the round portions of the cylinder, assign a different one to the flat areas. Because of the nature of your model, you shouldn't need to use more than 2 smoothing groups. The more smoothing groups you have, the higher your vert count goes up.

So we should allow monopolies because a company innovates first?

My post wasn't addressing what we should or shouldn't allow. It was addressing this misconception of Valve doing something wrong because publishers freely choose it as DRM for some of their retail games.

You want something other than Steam for retail games? Fine, so do I, but crying monopoly (like the retailers in the OP) doesn't change a publishers mind. It's up to the consumers to complain to publishers on why they don't want it and suggest alternatives.

This is the reason some games use Steam as DRM instead of Securom+Steam+WindowsLive (bioshock 2.) People complained, a good number said Steam would be better, there you go.

As Twiz as said, I don't like monopolies either, competition is good for the consumer. However, those who have a problem with Steam cutting into their profits need to step it up a notch and come out with something worth while to attract new consumers and people already using Steam.

What has that to do with anything? The industry and the economy don't stand still and that's a good thing. I wouldn't mind another digital distributer with a 40% market share because then Valve couldn't just translate Dollar prices 1:1 to Euro.

It has everything to do with everything.

Why does Steam have such large market share? Because it's the most popular digital distributer today.

Why is it the most popular? Because it's been in development for at least eight years, constantly being built upon, expanded, and marketed to users. It didn't get to where it is today because some retail games use it for DRM, that's not what gives Steam it's huge market share, user base does.

Steam has over 30 million users... do the retailers in the OP really expect me to believe this is all because of brick and mortar copies bundled with Steam?

As Jetsetlemming has stated, Steam being the DRM for certain games is not what's creating the monopoly as some digital distributors are claiming. Even if it was only Valve games and games purchased through Steam that used Steam's DRM, Steam would still be the most popular digital platform. That's the big reason publishers would choose it in the first place.

It makes sense. I'm also not a fan that games that i bought retail only work with Steam. For example when i bought Civ 5 i couldn't play it for two days because it wasn't officialy launched on Steam at this point.

That's pretty much the situation with every game today, retail or otherwise. That's what DRM is, not allowing the consumer to play until the server says it's ok.

    Quote from Steppenwolf

Steam should only be an option that retail games give for people who like the socialising and the achievements, DLC etc. It shouldn't be integral part of a retail game. That indeed is creating a monopoly situation.

I don't think those are the core reasons a publisher chooses to implement Steam. They might use it as an additional selling point but ultimately it's about protecting their product (if that actually works or not is a different discussion.)

Yes, Steam is creating a monopoly over digital sales and competition is definitely better for the consumer. However, I don't see any other companies truly attempting to compete with Valve. People aren't going to stop buying games from Steam because other digital distributors want a bigger piece of the pie. Nothing will change until they actual do something. Less qq, more pewpew.

The only reason publishers go with Steam Works for their DRM is because far more users prefer that over something like Securom where every option is ticked.

This is pretty much the norm for most digital distributors who bother to voice their... "opinion". They basically use fear mongering rhetoric to sway the consumer away from Steam because they know Steam makes way more in profits than they do and that's just not right apparently.

Rather than say the sky will fall if Steam produces any more revenue percentage, make a better digital distribution platform that actually has the capability to compete with Steam.

    Quote

The head of sales at a big-name digital service provider agreed: “At the moment the big digital distributors need to stock games with Steam. But the power resides with bricks and mortar retailers, they can refuse to stock these titles. Publishers are hesitant, but retail must put pressure on them.”

Notice how all of the complaints are coming from other digital distributors. Why the hell would say, Walmart give a rats ass what DRM a game uses? They wouldn't and they don't, the only retailers making a big deal out of this are the ones who have their own digital distribution service.

They're fooling themselves if they think brick and mortar stores have the power to sway publishers in choosing a different DRM. Only the consumer has the power to dictate what DRM will go into a game, even if it takes the publisher longer than it should to realize that. In fact, at this point, brick and mortar stores are probably the last people to convince a publisher from doing anything. Digital distribution, be is Steam or some other platform, makes up a good 80% of total sales (I could be wrong on that, I'm going from memory here.) No publisher is going to say to their stockholders they just made a move to get more games sold in physical form instead of digital, it just isn't going to happen.

Haha, trust me Chris, I know. We were allotted 2k textures for the contest and that's what I used

I could have broken it up into four 1024s but I figured the 2k would give me better results.
