  • Baby Dies While Parents Raise Virtual Daughter

Ah, right, here was the other incident (4 years ago):

    http://play.tm/news/6121/child-dies-as- ... -in-korea/

    Quote

Yet more troubles in an MMOG-obsessed nation today as it is revealed a South Korean couple allow their baby to die, after the child was left alone for five hours while the parents went to a PC Baang (internet cafÂE to play World of Warcraft. "We were thinking of playing for just an hour or two and returning home like usual, but the game took longer that day," the parents confessed, after being arrested on criminal charges. The baby was just four-months old when left alone, and died of suffocation when she rolled onto her stomach.Related

South Korean authorities have already said that the parents will be made to defend this apparent case of outrageous neglect in court. "It's unfortunate, because the tragedy could have been averted if the couple had just left their daughter with Yu's mother-in-law, who lived upstairs from them," said the police. "We booked the pair on criminal charges, judging that when you consider the situation, they were responsible for their daughter's death."

This isn't the first time that gaming addictions have resulted in tragedy, certainly not in South Korea - where games playing comprises one of the nation's staple hobbies - but this perhaps does represent a new low

Yeah, my major gripes so far have not been with what happens in-game, but more with the crappy server browser and the CTD's I've been getting ever since the servers came back up last night. Why do DICE always make soso server browsers =/.

Isn't this kinda old? I remember seeing a story very similar to this a couple of years ago.

  • Downloadable Content for Console/PC RPGs...

    - Does the DLC for these RPGs actually interest you?

Generally, yes. Only if I haven't finished the game or started it yet. It was the case for Fallout 3. The DLCs started coming out a bit after I started playing it, so they integrated seamlessly to the experience, so it was pretty fun playing through them. Even after finishing the game and learning about Point Lookout and Zeta, because of the quality of the DLCs before I continued my game to finish them. As for ME2 and Dragon Age with their free DLC on purchase, why not? It's free I downloaded and played them. I finished ME2 and I saw that there is new DLC coming out with vehicular gameplay, but I'm done with the game already...so I'll most likely play through that only on my second playthrough at some point. As for Dragon Age, I have it and bought its DLC, but haven't gotten to playing it yet (its length is kinda intimidating), but I bought all the DLC so far so it'll be a pretty seamless experience once I play it.

    - Would new DLC bring you back to play the game if you beat it already or otherwise stopped playing it?

Like I said, not really, if it comes out while I'm playing it and or haven't started it yet, I'll buy it. If I've already finished, not really.

    - How long after a game releases would you still be interested in DLC?

6 months I guess? Maybe a bit less.

    - Have you/do you buy the expansion packs to RPGs? How long after the original game releases would you want a major expansion pack to be released?

There don't seem to be many expansion packs for RPGs these days, at least, not the ones that I've played (I don't consider the Fallout 3 DLC expansions, they're just DLC to me). The only one that comes to mind as of late is the upcoming Dragon Age one, but I won't buy that until the finish the first game hehe.

Well the method used clearly was unique, even now I have yet to see a studio round up 35 people to grill you at once Either way, I came in unprepared for that, and I deeply regretted it for many months after this. The team and the games you guys make are just absolutely stellar for their production values, and I can only hope to work with you guys at one point in the future.

Now for Jason and Vince to create a new indie studio....

Well that answers it =P. And yeah, that does seem intimidating.

Kotaku got their hands on the 16 page lawsuit:

    http://kotaku.com/5485703/ousted-infini ... s/gallery/

Someone in the comments made some bullet points with the major points:

    Quote

In a nutshell: Activision wants to rape the series and leave it for dead. West and Zampella contested this, so Activision removed them from the frame.Summary:

    - Activision fired them to avoid paying royalties and gain control over Infinity Ward.

    - Infinity Ward had been granted full creative control over the series, and Activision decided that they no longer wanted this to be the case.

    - West and Zampella apparently invited to a sham meeting and accused of false charges, which Activision used as basis to fire them.

    - Activision CEO quoted as saying that best way to run a studio is to engender a culture of "skepticism, pessimism and fear".

    - West and Zampella want the royalties they were set to receive as outlined in their contracts, and want ownership of the "Modern Warfare" brand.

    - Activision agreed to let West and Zampella run IW freely as an independent studio.

    - Activision broke the agreement by pressuring IW into making Modern Warfare 2 (which they never wanted to make), and by issuing "aggressive schedules".

    - IW employees have apparently not been paid fairly.

    - Contract gave West and Zampella complete control over studio, complete creative control over brand and "explicitly provides that no such game can be commercially released without the written consent of West and Zampella". West and Zampella were to receive royalties over titles, the brand and the unique technologies used in the "Call of Duty" and "Modern Warfare" games.

    - Agreement intended to provide West, Zampella AND studio employees with compensation for their work.

    - Royalties were due to be paid on 31 March 2010. Activision said to have launched a phony investigation on 3 February 2010 to provide a basis on which to remove West and Zampella and break their previously arranged agreements.

    - They were not told of any acts of apparent wrongdoing, and were told that refusing to cooperate would result in "insubordination" and justify termination.

    - All employees were interviewed, dealing much emotional distress. Any attempts by West and Zampella to console them would constitute "insubordination".

    - West and Zampella suing for "Breach of Contract", "Breach of Implied Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing" and "Wrongful Termination".

    - Activision are the biggest assholes of the game industry. Ever.

I was surprised to hear they did not want to work on MW2. If a lot these allegations are true, pretty shitty of Activision.

Maybe most of the devs might jump ship, follow the two leads and form a new company again? In any case, pretty crappy on Activision's part. I guess they wanna run CoD to the ground like they did with Guitar Hero. They never learn.

Yeah, I reduced the glossiness in the spec map. Per my ref, the whiter bricks were a tad glossy, but looks off, so took it out. Wasn't too sure about the roof, but that kinda confirms it. I'll see if I'll need to desaturate it a bit after I do the lighting for the scene today.

Watching it now, the man talks like he is out of breath half the time lol.

    -EDIT-

It definitely is an intriguing picture he's painting of the future. I don't think it'll ever get to that point though. At some point, we'll probably realize at what point it can be destructive and write it off or just plain tiresome. But I think these kinds of "games" and such will only ever stay restricted to the types of media such as Facebook, gaming itself, etc. Some of his examples of "games" in TV, soda cans and such are just contests that have been here since forever. I mean, brushing your teeth for points? I'll give out a big sigh if we ever make it to that point heh. Kinda reminds me of when people thought by now we'd have flying cars and everything. We have a tendancy to exaggerate things =P.

Yeah, I was a little too conservative on the polycount as this was one of the first models I started with and was thinking most of the detail would go through the normal map. I've been trying to keep "game-ready assets in mind". How do you think I could improve on the normal map?
