I've been talking to some friends who've pirated the game and checked up on the torrent sites to see what what and it seems the game is indeed NOT cracked. A person who's downloaded it can get in-game, but once they first get into the Animus, they get a white screen forever. The only way to get past this is finding a save that's already beaten the game and put it in your save folder, but at that point, it's pointless playing cause everything is unlocked, can't play the story missions, etc. You can just run around and kill people. So, sure it is getting pirated, but they certainly can't play it right. Has to be one of the first games in a long while that hasn't been cracked already a week after release. Though the "always have to be connected to the Internet" is annoying to paying customers, it seems to be working to detract pirates from playing, not pirating. Ubisoft might be on to something here. They only need to find a way to not have to be always connected to play an SP game and should be good, though that'll be probably hard since it's probably one of the key points of the DRM for SP games at least.

Personally, I'll probably be purchasing it at some point when a slight price drop comes to the game, but the being always connected to the internet doesn't bother me so much. People were complaining about the Ubi servers going down and such (which was cause of DDoS attacks of pirates and whiners ), but they seem to forget Steam was exactly the same back with HL2's launch and such. It took it a while for to get where it's at. Also, when you think about it. Steam as a DRM is not that different from Ubi's solution. I mean, yeah, people defend Steam by saying there's offline mode, but honestly when has that ever worked? It worked 1 out of 3 times and only just recently they fixed it to work 100% (haven't checked though). Before even playing a game on Steam it has to be authenticated on the internet and when newer games get released, it happens that you can't even access your SP games because it says "This game is unavailable right now. Please try again later." or not to mention that for non Valve games, you sometimes get the patch much later than the rest of the internet. Steam isn't perfect, but we've come to live with it and love it since it's been here so long, it's grown on us and is pretty convenient despite it's few hiccups. In the end, I'd say give Ubisoft's DRM solution time to grow. It can't get everything right, right off the bat.

(Sorry for bumping, but got into an argument about this with a couple of friends at school and it got me thinking about it and I was thinking we could further discuss it here. They were pretty adamant about Steam being a godsend and weren't listening at all to what I was saying :/)

Yeah, no doubt about that, but what I'm wondering is about those Crysis 2 screenies. The suit is either really high-res or it's been composited in.

This made me chuckle as well, a member from TMH wrote this about that interview:

    Quote

It's ehhhhhh, ahhhhhhhhhh ... well ..... ahhhhhhHoly fuck, am I listening to Barack Obama during a press interview? Goddamn.

    >Best of the best

    >Yakuza

    >Drug criminal

    >Russian special forces

    >Black OPs sniper

    >Blackwater mercenary

And they're all brought to this alien jungle to be hunted in a "LOST" sort of fashion. So I can assume it's going to be a group of tough assholes that are complete strangers to each other going "Hey, man, FUCK YOU, listen to me.. we do things my WAY!"

    "NO, BRO, FUCK YOU!"

"SHUT THE FUCK UP. ALL OF YOU. I AM LAWRENCE FISHBURNE. IF WE WANT TO LIVE OR GET OUT OF HERE, WE HAVE TO STICK TOGETHER."

"HE'S RIGHT. I AM ADRIEN BRODY. A MORE SENSIBLE, DOWN TO EARTH, BLACKWATER MERCERNARY. WE SHOULD STICK TOGETHER."

"NO, I AM YAKUZA. FUCK ALL OF YOU. I'M SPLITTING UP."

The groups split up, they all get picked off one by one, eventually it ends with some climactic scene with Adrien Brody killing a Predator.

What the fuck am I hearing? This is the most overdone cliche ensemble of characters.. oh, man, they're the best of the best.. they're really down and dirty, they're gritty, man!

Based on that YouTube interview, I'm calling it right now that's how it'll play out.

Same here. Pirating games nowadays feels like taking a dump in my own swimming pool. (I'm still waiting for my bonus for the DS game I worked on ). I still pirate a few ds game now and then, mostly due to the fact they are too expensive for what they are (mostly amateur'ish titles) and because R4 is sooo convenient. I still buy the ones I like the most though, like Pokemon and Animal Crossing.

I still pirate all my software though. That's partly due to habit and partly due to prices. Who buys 3ds max or the Adobe suit for personal use anyway?

Oh yeah...I forgot to mention software, well pirating software is kinda a given I think for us hehe. 1k+ for a licence :0?

But but, you work in a studio now though, aren't you required to have a legal copy of the software the studio uses if you want to work on studio stuff at home?

I don't pirate games anymore ever since I started doing 3D. So, my "sometimes" relates to movies (usually rare ones, I like watching most movies on a TV), music and tv shows.

Don't know if you can guys say, but my friend and I were having a bit of a debate whether the character model of Nomad in those Crysis 2 screenies is really the in-game one and looks as high-res as that? I was thinking yes, but then my friend reminded of of those promo renders of the new suit that looks mega high-res and it looked the exactly same in those screenies. We checked the Crysis 1 suits and didn't look as high-res as that either (more res in the faces than the suits).

I'm a bit in a dilemma for the grass in my farm. Don't know if I should go with a greener version or a yellower one. The greener version is more visually interesting (I think) as it creates a better contrast with most of the models whereas the yellower one makes more sense (since it's kinda abandoned and noone takes care of it), but has less of a nice contrast with most of the things. Given that I'll be adding dead crops in the background in the field you see which will be yellower, I'm leaning toward to greener version of the grass so they don't blend too much together, but there's still this nagging feeling of using the yellower one because it makes more sense =S. What do you guys make of it:

    EDIT

Currently trying to overlay the two green and yellow variants and see how that goes. The mix of the two is the last pic.

    EDIT2

After some more tweaking, added a some variation of green in yellow on the grass plane texture itself and changed up ground texture and arrived at the last pic, think I'll keep this for now (I'll probably change my mind again at some point =P). Newer one is the first pic:

Probably just proof of concept for the futuristic setting, it is easier for the concept artist to go from ref/photo and paintover. That's what Thierry Doizon was saying at a concept art conference at MIGS, gotta make quality concepts the fastest way possible...so paintovers of photos, geometry, etc are a must he said.

Not really, it's just that it seems to be the norm now for shooter SP games sadly. So, wouldn't be unreasonable to expect 6 hours.

I'm planning to tweak/redo the textures for both the Zombie and the Spartan helmet at some point since I made them this summer and I've learned much since then and so that they'll be viable to keep. I agree for the tank, I'll probably go for a viewport screengrab as it shows the normal map better. The car doesn't have a texture, it's purely shaders. I'll have to retouch its shaders though and redo that page as well. As for the alien sculpt, what don't you like in it, just curious?

Thanks for the crits so far! Keep 'em coming .

Hopefully it won't be 49.99$ for just 3 hours. Would have to be 6 minimum at least I think.
