How is this any different from the Back to Karkand deal for BF3? Which was generally praised I believe.

You're getting a free expansion... As biased as I am I still think that's one of the more generous pre-order incentives out there.

I'm surprised to see fellow developers reason like this. DICE has a separate team working on expansions, a substantial amount of people working their ass off to release content in the off-year to prolong the game while the original team is doing the next game. There's no crippled box-product deprived of content that's pushed to DLC. It's a team hired separately... almost a different studio within a studio. And that should come as no surprise, have you seen the amount of content Premium shipped for BF3?

You'd rather see a BF game every year? Linear development cycles are over for AAA-games, there's multiple teams at an office.

Blod dragon was a big succes as for retro stuff, Xbox new design is not

Personally I love the sharp edges over the "blobby" design of most stuff these days.

It's the same with their phones. You can just pull em out while it's raining and you don't have to be afraid of water damage, quite nice

And then I figured it out...California... When was the last time you saw rain again?

Yeah, they should be as professional/serious as we are, right? God forbid if they have a cats thread.

OT, haven't heard of it, probably not gonna join since it's not related to any specific work like mapcore, polycount is... (And does look kinda shitty indeed, but looks can be deceiving)

Looks cool. Considering the movement system might it not have been better tomod Mirrors Edge? Or is ME unmoddable?

I believe it is not officially supported but people have found ways of using the unreal editor with the assets from the game to create their custom content. Last time I looked, it seemed like a pain in the butt to setup and to even manage to run your custom map, because the game was made to not allow it.

Indeed, the game was shipped with the editor and it's not that tricky to get things running tbh, as long as you're aware of the limitations you should be good to go. (Like not really being able to run the level in the editor but only ingame, but that's the same when modding Skyrim... No BEAST lighting, etc.) I wouldn't recommend just delving into it and hoping to get things running though, just follow a guide and then you're golden.

I'm not sure you can make code changes, I doubt it. But it's quite easy to make levels using the ingame assets or even add new assets to the game.

I hope you guys can replicate the Chaos Theory multiplayer experience I spent a shitload of time playing that!

Wasn't much of a fan of the changes in Double Agent's multiplayer though, it didn't feel sneaky splinter cell-ish enough, more like circus acrobats.

Pfff, I so want this game to be good So far it looks like the Splinter Cell I've been waiting for.

(It'd be awesome to have mod tools for the MP, /wishful thinking)

Really cool article, only read it halfway through though, gonna finish it at home.

Anyhow, has anybody used Creation Kit? They're talking about efficiency, workflows and all that stuff to make the magic happen in a reasonable amount of time. But from some experiments I did when investigating the tools I see a TON of ways to increase efficiency .. The camera controls are really bad imo and hold you back the most. It's sort of a pain in the ass if you're used to (dare I say it) better tools, it's not mere preferences here there's just features lacking.

    - No WASD camera control (FPS-style "walking" through the scene)

    - Scrolling on mouse to zoom in is a pain in the ass, slow as fuck. (Without a way to quickly increase sensitivity without going into the menu?)

    - Can't orbit camera around itself, always requires an object to focus on.

    - CTRL+F to switch to an object is, while nice, slow.

    - Can't change snapping grid increments on the fly with shortcut, requires menu.

If any of you know how to do these that would be awesome Other than that I'll just have to get used to it, I doubt it can ever be as fast though.

Sort of agree. From the looks of it the map Zedalis seems to have more impressive brushwork, lots of interesting and complex shapes. This really shows what the tool is capable off imo.

But Brotherhood has more content and a nice overall polish so it's definitely not undeserved, guess that's why it won! I suppose it's hard on what exactly to judge sometimes

I think Zedalis lacked a corridor leading into the main chamber, that would've sold the entry.

    Gratz everyone!

I think the skills of the programmer might make or break the project if you wanna go the procedural way.

I'm also not aware how you're going to proceduarally make a level in UDK... (It's built and baked, can't move BSP around can you? Unless you export them as a mesh?)

So then you might as well go with static meshes made in an external 3D package and at this point it doesn't matter what engine you use. Personally I'd advise using Unity... And perhaps use some tools for BSP like features like probuilder if you really need it.

UDK seems user friendly at first but it's immensively more complex under the hood for a project like this (students?) Unity would likely create less headaches if you have decent coder support, you can just focus on building what you want.

So I'll repeat, go with what the programmer wants. As a LD you'll just have to work around it but knowing that the coder can support the tools to make things work from a technical standpoint should make you go a long way.

Anyone else see Oblivion? It was ok, very nicely done visually but the storyline was a little muddled and I lost track of what was happening towards the end...

See my post on the previous page for what I think

I don't see why you'd think the story line is muddled though:

    Quote

It's a pretty simple concept (once you understand it all) and they give bits and pieces of the puzzle at the right time to make you catch up to what's really happening. There's no complex multiple arcs either...

Perhaps it was paced a bit too slow at times but that only made me appreciate the visuals more, some breathing time is OK with these kinds of movies I think.

    Oblivion

I'm not a big Tom Cruise fan but I definitely recommend it! I'm very glad I got to see it in the cinema, it wouldn't be the same at home... You need to see this on a big screen and with huge bass, the music and effects are awesome! (Soundtrack by M83) Same director as Tron: Legacy and it shows, don't wanna hype it too much cos hype is the devil for enjoyment but yeah... really liked it I went into the cinema not knowing a single bit about the movie other than knowing it's sci-fi and I saw the poster, that's usually enough for me

Some scenes were acted very well but I found others a bit lacking, chemistry wasn't there all the time.

The redhead on the other hand gave an incredible performance, wow
