I've found that this is literally impossible. In my experience when trying to to this it always end yp with LoL being easier in so many regards, and you get the same high when playing it so people who already play LoL will always complain that dota 2 is too hard.

My main complaint with DOTA is how "far" everything is. Every skills's distance is further so people are further apart, locations are further apart... It's so extremely inconvenient, I already dislike having to pan my camera in LoL, let alone in DOTA

I went to Digital Arts & Entertainment in Belgium as well. I think it's one of the best decisions I have made. Mind you, it's mostly a generalist education but I think that actually is its strong point. If you do jack shit in your spare time you won't be good enough in a certain branch to move to a professional carreer so you gotta work on that besides school work. But all the extra knowledge of different disciplines really helps in the end!

So yeah, I think getting a degree can be great because you get to meet like minded people, can collaborate on projects. Learning things on your own, with pressure to find a job, usually takes way more time in comparison to having it explained and having assignments that teach you workflows step by step.

Of course there's folks out there that can figure it out on their own but you need to have mad perseverance for that I'm not ashamed in saying I would never have ended up where I am now if I hadn't gone to uni, it's rough out there. Uni can help you land and internship... etc. I think it's great, just make sure you don't waste 3 years of your life by being passive during that time!

Nowadays I have to go looking up forum posts and shit to get an idea of how long a game actually is because it's not like they actually print 'oh yeah this lasts a few hours LOL' on the box.

    http://www.howlongtobeat.com

I always look at this before buying a game. These days I'm not so inclined in buying one when it's over 10h long.

Guess I'm late to the party but I finally finished watching season 06 of Lost. I watched half of it on TV with the weekly releases back in 2010 but dropped it when I moved to Stockholm and things got hectic. After I settled down I forgot to which episode I had gotten so couldn't start mid season, everything was a blur... So I started from the beginning of the season but it was super boring since I still remembered quite a bit so I dropped it again (think the BF3 crunch hit around that time as well so that wasn't helping xD).

So (now) I finally said fuck it and sat through it all and I'm very glad I did Apparently there's people that really disliked the ending but I thought it was perfect!

Feels good to have that closure, was on my to-do list for years

Just finished it. Wow... what a fucking asshole.

I was also expecting multiple endings. The ending sequence was actually the only sequence in the whole game where I didn't wanna kill any enemies cos it felt wrong, the Fireflies weren't the bad guys. I think I replayed that section 4 times to do it stealthy (never replayed a section before that except for dying). Then I finally reach that surgery room and was forced to kill the surgeon? Dayum, fuck Joel. Someone was screaming "you monster" or something right after you stab the surgeon and I thought it was Ellie and that she would say that it's ok and that it was her choice and that I was doing the wrong thing... Then a massive cryfest and ending but nope xD I felt betrayed that the game made me do that... They make me play Joel for such a long period of time and then switch to Ellie at the very ending almost as a fuck you, you don't get to decide what Joel does after all, you're just a bystander... This is Joel's story, look at him being a selfish bastard. So that was a huge disconnect for me and broke my sense of immersion I thought both characters were equaly important, I really liked the parts where you got to play as Ellie!

But I think the message wasn't strong enough... I think they should have killed Ellie during the epilogue so that Joel wouldn't have gotten things his way and neither a vaccine was found cos he killed all those people at the hospital... so no greater good either, all cos of him. Now that would've been tragic. But I guess they didn't want to portray his selfishness as a bad thing? God damnit, guess I just wanted Joel to be a good guy or seem him get fucked up Very humane story indeed.

I kinda feel for the guy though, loosing Ellie would be the 2nd time he lost a daughter but still... at the very least make Ellie decide for herself... She was all for continuing and not settling down, doing the right thing and Joel just downright lied to her. Kinda hard to sympathize with him then :/

The scene where the dude shoots himself after shooting his infected brother really got to me, way more than the ending unfortunately

I was cheering when Tess died, I really hated her guts xD

Gameplay wise I really liked it. Some sections with the bandits were a bit too long (in the city) but other than that I think the pacing was super well balanced.

So many details and awesome character interaction! Giraffes, that slow scene of Ellie hunting that deer, the high five... So much polish!!!

The combat was intense indeed, I hoped they would've gone for fewer humans in an encounter though, it was getting very uncharted-ish and hard to believe. But encounters with the infected were super awesome!! I was scared of the clickers until the very ending, they sounded and moved so unpredictably that I always thought they spotted me or were gonna do something different!

9/10 Almost completely nailed it! Super awesome game.

If anyone's bothered, just published some thoughts about HD during the next generation. http://bit.ly/19agNEd

If it comes to the point where devs have to choose between 1080p and 60FPS then I hope they botch 1080p first so we can at least have a smooth gaming experience 30 FPS is very painful to play, definitely since a lot of times framedrops put you closer to the 20ies :s I guess that's a personal thing

The point of DRM/no trading is to get the publishers more money, so why would they counter that advantage to the publishers by then lowering the price. They wouldn't. Xbox can't be compared to things like Steam, Xbox is a platform and distribution method; and therefore a monopoly, Steam isn't.

They would if lowering the price of a game increases revenue by driving more sales? (And digital is cheaper so they actually won't loose money by cutting the price compared to how retail is now) It's what steam does, right? Or are those sales just steam being the "good guy", I think not.

I don't think MS genuinely cares about their consumers, but it's possible cheaper games align with making more money. I don't have an inside view on financials so I've no idea if it's actually feasible, I'm not counting on having cheaper games anyway but one can dream xD

In a portfolio, is it okay to have maps that are only blocked out joined with a LDD to explain in details the creative process and how the final result should be?

Everyone has design ideas, everyone thinks their idea is tha bomb on paper but it hardly ever is Ideas are cheap, execution is everything... in the end only the results matter and if you don't have anything to show then it's a huge gamble if you will be able to deliver. It takes a lot of skill and perseverance to make a functional level since there's so many aspects and collaboration. If your idea is really exceptional and you have a working prototype it might be sufficient but very likely not... I'm talking about exceptions here.

So yeah, even if your blocked out map was fully scripted and playable it might not be enough to get you a job at a decent studio. They will be looking for additional skills, animation, art, ... to set you apart from the rest. I believe you need to be aware of how things work in other disciplines to be a good level designer. This depends greatly from studio to studio though, some designers only get to do scripting, some only blockouts and no prop placement and some get to do bit of everything. I think it's important to have a vision that not only plays well but that looks good as well so you need to think about that even in the blockout fase or your composition will be shit. As a level designer you have an awful lot of influence on the foundation so you better know what you're doing

You can't expect an artist to come in and take over a whiteboxed mess (even if it plays well), and vice versa... Artists can't expect a level designer to take a finished piece of art and make it fully playable without making adjustments. Gamedev is team business so you need to be able to take feedback and work together with other people, I suppose in that light a management job would look good as an addition to solid design skills.

I'm 25 years old at the moment and i will graduate by the end of this year, am i considered 'old' in the gaming industry?

Age doesn't matter one bit, skills are the only thing that matter. However, if I hear you're 25 and have been playing professional poker for the last 7 years I won't generally take that as a good sign that you are super passionate about game dev (unless you were doing that on the side, of course!). I expect the people I work with to go that extra mile for results, most people I work with have been doing this since they were 12-14 as hobbies... I guess some people can sincerely change carreers on a whim but this would be a bit of a red flag to me unless explained why suddenly you want to do level design. Unless it was not a full time poker carreer, you said you're studying? Then I suppose it's neither a plus or a bummer.

Hah I disagree Never thought of that since I dislike Apple but that looks super sexy! Minimalistic, no bullshit gradients/shadows whatever. A screen is flat, it doesn't need fake buttons.

    Reminds me of this:

Thrik PS4 and Xbox One aren't that impressive hardware wise, I doubt devs will be able to keep 1080p for longer than a couple of years. Multiplatform titles will suffer the most obviously although it might be stretched a bit now that their architecture is similar. (Pretty much how it was this generation, the early titles were 1080p right?)

I'm all for it though, definitely 60FPS! But I'm a bit skeptical cos it's not that big of a leap forward, at least if you compare it to PC's now. It feels like they're just catching up but will be late to the party :s

What do you mean by that last statement? That graphics are decent enough now that we should be able to stall and maintain 60FPS + 1080p?

Another longer trailer (lots of shared footage though)! I actually didn't hear Snake saying something at the end the first time. It actually sounds somewhat decent but I want even more raspy voice! MOAR! Although it could be fine since it's Naked Snake he doesn't need to sound exactly the same as Solid, but rather damn close

Yup, MP only. Although it does look like they're going for a MP-campaign kind of vibe, not sure how exactly that will work.
