Man, how awesome would it have been (from a joke standpoint)
Quoteif the end credits rolled right after the opening scene

you will be creating rough shapes using either a "brush" based tool (think hammer, unrealed) or using a 3d program (3dsmax, maya, xsi, and most places now will use sketchup if they have any sense - because how easy it is to use for basic level creation).
Thank you for clarifying.
Quotea good idea (imho) would be to get into an engine you are familiar with, that has a single player campaign. use the assets, textures and "universe" of that game to create your own levels. because this is what you will be doing in a job, placing assets created by someone else, into a level built by you. heavy emphasis should be placed on the gameplay - but unfortunately you will have to make sure it looks relatively appealing as well.
This is exactly what I have been doing so far. Thanks for the affirmation.

I dare you to remove the de saturation bollocks that GoW uses and go your own way with the lighting.

I can post some screenshots without the desaturation filter on if you like. Anything else you might recommend on making it more visually scary? I know these shots are missing something to accomplish that, but I'm having a hard time nailing exactly what it is. I'm still in the process of doing more destruction, like caving in the far end of the train tracks, broken tiles, etc. to sell the deserted subway station idea.
I'm still pretty rookie at this, but want to make sure I'm doing all the right things from the get-go.
The premise is a different spin on introducing the Berserker from Gears 1 and having it be more intimidating than the Tomb level from the original game.

Haven't had a lot of time to work on this as of late, but here's some progress on the detail and lighting passes. C&C welcome.

Thanks for the info, KungFu. I've been playing around with it using your suggestions, but it still appears to be doing it's own thing. Using dynamic shadows just shows these crappy box shadows around the base of the doors. Once I get a chance, I'll post some screenshots of what it's doing. I'm starting to think the GoW version of the Unreal 3 engine might not support dynamic shadows.

A lot of studios I applied for wanted you to know basic modelling but were willing to help teach you if you were unfamiliar with them, which is cool. On NS2 all I do is 100% mapping which I
. So it does vary from place to place.Edit: Just to preface these questions, it's not a "is it worth it to learn x" question, more of a "how important is x relative to y" question.

Just out of curiosity, is this just for slightly complex shapes needing to be included for grey/white-boxing purposes, being able to model a level/scene in 3DS/Maya for projects that don't yet have a fully functional engine/editor, to make full blown small custom assets, or all of the above? I'm focusing most of what I learn on scripting and predicting player actions since my understanding is that most studios have environment artists who do all the modeling work.
Granted, I know the situation can be vastly different depending on the size/philosophy of the company. I have a limited amount of free time, so I'm trying to focus my energy on what will give me the biggest return on time invested and be most attractive to potential employers.

I really enjoyed the puzzle game Geared, and I'm not generally a fan of puzzle games.

Exit Strategy = ES = Ensemble Studios. Bad abbreviation juju, but at least you'd go 14 years and some high quality games before getting shut down. Now that I think about it, that might be the way to go.

Still a long way to go.

Thanks KungFu. That's exactly the kind of info I needed. Lots of information on the web about how to color a scene, not much on actual lighting techniques (at least not that I've found).

I have a spotlight casting onto a a set of doors (Movers). The floor is made of a series of static meshes. The only light that should be shining into the hallway pictured below should be a small sliver since the doors are ajar. Instead I get that.
The shadows continue coming out wrong even after trying several of the suggestions listed on the Epic forums and I'm a bit stumped at this point. Anyone here know how to fix this?
