The attitude of people on that torrent site. I used to pirate when I was 12-14 its pretty much what got me into PC gaming, I can't even remember how I justified it back then, I think it was just because my pocket money was none existent, but as soon as i got into it if I couldn't afford the latest release I just bought the 3 for £10 from the bargain bucket, the games in those buckets were epic, got some of the best PC games ever from them. Then I would occasionally fork out for a new release. And since steam has gone big I have pretty much exclusively bought all my games from there when they do sales.

I genuinely done understand pirating games anymore, you can get brilliant PC games for so cheap ie, bargain bucket, steam, humble indie bundle, etc.

Yeah as e-freaks has said, focus on one thing. Being able to do other things is a plus but only if you can do them well. Lots of people seem to make this mistake and on their portfolios/websites state they are all these things, don't focus your efforts into one thing and do it very well.

And definately go to uni. Not nessecarily doing a design course though tbh. You have a good 4 years before you will finish uni and thefore have plenty of time to build up on your work in your own time.

  • POLL: The next MapCore challenge...

If the vote is close enough, we might as well just line up all three in succession over the next few months

I personally think that is what should happen anyway, they are all good ideas for challenges, which ever wins the poll can just be the first one.

Also can I please reiterate to keep the challenges well spaced apart (with adequate warning) and with 3-4 week timescales. I really want to participate but life is very busy right now, im sure it is for others too.

you would be surprised how easy it can be with any class to get 5:1 if you just give the gun some time to grow on you, its all about using slightly different tactics.

An almost inconsequential amount of extra damage. It's a joke load out that everyone fell for.

edit: it is not in the same league as MW's stopping power. Not even close.

no. its plus 1/3 damage. That is a huge amount of extra damage.

did you seriously just ask whats wrong with magnum rounds. They completely imbalance the game and pretty much force everyone who wants to fight with any weapon without headshots to use it. That's what is wrong with it, bc2 basically copied the WORST thing from mw2.

    Quote from Erratic

Adds to choice, more granular counters to other loadouts.

BC2 is the best multiplayer game after its grandfather 1942, not that bloated mess we call BF2.

no. Just no. BC2 is a great game but please for the love of god do not claim that magnum rounds is a good idea. It shows a complete inability to consider balancing.

Yeah that would be awesome. Hopefully they make use of bunkers and such, they had some in bf2 but they were untextured and never used. Probably because they never got tech to cut holes in terrain. Really hope bf3 has an editor tbh.

From what ive been reading its only the code that is full open source, the assets themselves can't be sold. So hopefully Wolfire can do something about this.

Challenges that take a lot of time up are not going to get many entrys. Keeping it as simple as possible, like the 20 brush contest is by far the best route.

A download link is far from ideal though, it requires a reader/employer to have the game mentioned and requires a lot of effort to actually appraise your design work. :/ That's why im pretty stumped on this issue. I can see the advantages to both. Just images keeps your portfolio simple and looks nice, but it doesn't really display any understanding of design.

I also don't seem to see many portfolios with layout stuff at all, atleast not on any of the modding sites.

If you aren't using a demo reel you would want to use a layouts though? Coz from the modding scene Ive got one view that you can just use images, literally everyone in the industry I know thinks that is no where near enough as it shows no actual design skill.

  • What are you playing now?

heavy rain :/ the one good thing I heard about the game was the story. I disagree:

    - the police are actually retarded and don't follow any kind of normal practice, ie the suspect leaves a building and your wondering what is going on in there, don't bother searching it and thus find evidence that helps prove the suspect actually had nothing to do with it.

    - never explain why the suspect comes out of the blackout with origami dogs in his hand

    - make the player play a section then later in the game make up something totally different that happens there

    - etc etc

Core mechanics feel ok, controls can be a bit shit sometimes, quite a annoying when the hold buttons vibrate in the same way that the tap buttons vibrate. Made the electricity maze very annoying when they drop just 1 tap button amongst 15 hold buttons, took me about 4 tries on that one fence to figure that out.

Your actions actually have very little effect over what happens in the game as much as the developers claimed otherwise. You can in fact not do anything for half the "game" and it would automatically play through anyway.

Graphically it looks horrible, some terrible animations, flat lighting, massive disparity between detail in different environments, poor lip sync.

That all said, I enjoyed it enough. 6/10 Lucky I borrowed it from someone at work and didn't buy it.

I really wanted to check this one out in game but I don't have UT3 installed. It looks to me like a lot of fun! Perhaps a bit too much reliance on jump pads for movement but I can appreciate why they're needed, as there was no real alternative if you wanted to use this layout (which I've already acknowledged looks fun!).

I did originally have the gravity low enough so you could jump between platforms but it made the players very floaty and slow moving when on the platforms, I realise now I could have just put gravity volumes between where you jump. My very original though was actually to use something like trigger pushes between them to act as giant jump pads, unfortunately at that stage I wasn't away of any volume that does that in unreal.

Yeah really good job everyone, I personally enjoyed it because in those 3 weeks I learnt more about geometry mode/texture editor/ lighting in unreal than I had in the past 2-3 months.

Also cheers for the uber comments Reno.

Here's a brutal one for you - Triathlon. First week, Source/HL map. Second week, Quake map. Third week, Unreal map.

Speedmap stuff would be great to try again, but it's hard to sustain things like that. I wonder if we might have better participation/results by mixing those sessions in between larger challenges?

There are two problems I see with that challenge.

People might not have one of those engines to work in, I know I personally don't have any Quake games (unless we are counting CoD4).

If someone has a very busy week on one of them they might miss part of the competition, what was good about the last challenge is the long time scale.
