Valve don't make games anymore, this shouldn't surprise anyone. They merely maintain their current popular games.

Hes doing some other jump thing though, at this point he just jumps about a mile, doesn't have the gauss cannon yet.

If all true, which sounds rather plausible, it really sucks for all the employees. I don't think we have any Mapcore people left there right?

Have talked with some people and they say its true, others say its not. Really strange...

I mean I know it's a craft that brings several disciples together, and you get better only by practicing, but from the different talks I've seen or articles I've read, I thought there was starting to be some sort of literature, especially now that they do uni game dev courses.

Dont get me wrong, I know I would enjoy reading what you linked ;)

Unfortunately pretty much all those books are written by people that have never made a game. Complete and utter theory crafting. There might be a few useful books but tbh in general level design resources are pretty poor, the best thing are all the GDC talks etc.

I think where we disagree is in the nature of Quake 2's gameplay. A straight port of The Edge to Q3A or most other modern shooters (arena or otherwise) would indeed suffer because there's been a slow and determined move away from map control in DM/Arena FPS's. This change can be seen in its extreme in DooM4, with its loadout system. For me, playing Q2 in the late 90's map control was a hugely rewarding aspect of the game, which rewarded players equally (if not sometimes more) to twitch-reflexes or aim. These days if you jump in to most dm/arena shooters you spawn with your finger on "foward" and don't let go until you die because everybody just bounces around at a million miles an hour trying to pwn the fastest and not worrying at all about playing defensively or learning the overall layout of the map.

Yeah my only experience of quake multiplayer is quake 3.

So I played that map a little recently and hated it, just watching a video of it right now and can see multiple huge issues with it compared with the gameplay of the game. Has a bunch of weapons down dead ends totally messing with the flow of movement, also making it easy to stop someone getting to those weapons if you already have them. Has a few areas where it goes from nice and open to allow for the fast paced movement of quake to 1 character wide stair ways. Can you explain to me why its considered a good quake map, because I would have thought the opposite.

Xmas is close, and as a person that doesn't care at all but has people asking what I would like to get, is there any good game dev/game design/level design book you would suggest? I have a couple in my wishlist: http://amzn.eu/aEZ2Q75 but I'm not sure if they are (still) relevant, good/worth the money.

    Suggestions welcome :)

Basically there is only one good design book I have read/seen.

Shit, sorry to hear that Clem. Good luck in the flat search.

Skyrim: Special Edition probably shouldn't have shipped with some of the game breaking bugs which were in the original version though. If they were making the special edition you'd think they'd reopen all of the bugs which were closed as won't fix (due to time constraints) when Skyrim first released and fix those since they had the chance. Money I guess.

    Nah mate, money.
