    FrieChamp,

My experience is that whatever moba you start out with is most likely going to be the one you'll stick with I'd wholeheartedly recommend dota 2 of course, especially because its made by valve<3 and not Riot.

I played LoL for about 18 months then got annoyed at all their bullshit patches. I moved to DOTA2 and I much happier on that side of the fence. The learning curve is certainly a lot higher though.

    I still play LoL rarely.

Sounds like there could be a good chance that PSM will have a ps4 compile target.

For those wondering, PSM is a c# library for making games for sony devices.

it might just be me, but pacing in games with a single core mechanic (such as combat) are very hard to do right from a LD perspective. I got combat fatigue from playing halo because there was too much combat, which is probably not the intention of the developers. it seems a given that combat should just be combat and in these run of the mill fps times, nobody really gives a fuck about good gameplay anymore as long as shit sells. brands have taken the place of good games.

i don't want every game to be emergent like stealth games, but something as simple as a counterweight to the combat mechanic seems necessary. i don't think i would have played half-life 1 to the end if it wasn't for the amazing pacing and balance between combat and puzzles throughout the game.

What about a game where combat is the sole focus?

IE : Godhand, Bayonetta, SF4, Vanquish etc?

If Godhand had puzzle solving I would like it much less.

I think if you make a sufficiently deep combat system then it can be appealing.

EDIT: When I reflect on that post I can't think of a FPS that fits that criteria. Doom was great but even that had the key and maze mechanism (shallow as it is). Not sure what to think about that...

Doesn't sound like you can be bothered, but you should give Halo Reach a chance. It's by far the best of the series.

I definitely agree with what you're saying about the first two games, the Library level from the original Halo was plain awful, but it also highlighted one of the main problems with the original Halo in that they copy/pasted the same geometry over and over to add more length to the game.Halo 2 didn't click with me at all, it's the only Halo game I've only played through once.

And yeah, the story in those games is complete garbage. They should try and tell smaller stories and focus on the gameplay, rather than overstretch and completely alienate everyone.

Anyway, Reach co-op on Heroic/Legendary difficulty is pretty amazing. Both in terms of AI and level design.

Interesting, up to this point I've always hear the first 2 were the best. Maybe that came from nostalgia. I'm sure I will eventually try it because at some point I'll be at someones house who only has an Xbox.

out of curiosity, what do you think is wrong with the gameplay in Halo? i've honestly had more fun with Halo than most other FPS's, at least in terms of singleplayer. hating halo seems to be the gaming-equivalent of hating justin bieber.

Well first off I played through the first 2 extensively and played maybe 15 mins of 3 and no 4. Played singleplayer, coop and multiplayer.

I'll just make a quick list of the things that annoyed me the most:

    1) The library level in Halo1. This has to be one of the worst levels I've ever played. I thought the game was broken or something the first time I played it.

    2) I didn't like the feel of most of the weapons.

    3) Level design in general was boring for me. It was basically fight a bunch of guys to get to the next checkpoint.

    4) Gamepads

    5) Multiplayer competitive was merely ok. I much preferred countless hl mods or quake dm.

    6) Characters were boring. It was like some kind of generic all-story. I don't really like a story that much in my FPSes unless it's a game like system shock which arguably might not be considered an FPS.

    7) The streets level in Halo2 also stood out to me as boring (though not nearly as bad as the library).

    Regenerating health.

    9) Floaty jump physics.

Those would be off the top of my head. The level design would be the thing that annoyed me the most. Usually if the level design is not great I just forget about it. In this case with levels like the library they were so bad I actually remember them.

Anyways bear in mind I'm one of those old man grumpus FPS players who still loves Doom today. I play Brutal Doom a ton. I also love the quake dm's, So take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I wouldn't be surprised if they at least allow use of the Vita as a stand-in controller, particularly with the new official controller rumoured to have Vita-like touch pad.

BTW I always wondered: can the Vita be connected to a PS3 and used to play its games, kind of like what the Wii U does?

I believe you can use it to play ps3 games even from another location streamed through the internet live OnLive. I think each game has to have that feature enabled on a game by game basis though.

    More rumors and info:

    Quote

Development sources with working knowledge of both next generation consoles have told us that PlayStation 4 will be more powerful than the next Xbox, will ship with a redesigned controller and launch by the end of the year in Japan and the US. PlayStation 4’s European launch will follow in early 2014.

Sony is set to reveal its next PlayStation on Wednesday February 20th at an event dubbed ‘see the future’. Sony Computer Entertainment released a teaser video last night to announce the event. Below, our sources revealed what to expect from PlayStation 4.

    The controller

Sources close to the hardware have revealed to us that PS4 will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing DualShock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons. The tech is based on Vita’s rear touchpad, and is similarly responsive in use.

A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

    The launch

We’re told that PlayStation 4 will launch in Japan and the US by Christmas, with a Euro rollout following in early 2014, the delay attributed to the complexities involved in European distribution. Alongside the console, Sony will also introduce a new, improved iteration of its PlayStation Eye peripheral, which remains compatible with the PlayStation Move controller. Move will be available at launch, but it’s not clear yet whether it will be bundled with the hardware. Sony has already earned an enormous amount of goodwill among studios working with PS4 development hardware. Privately, Sony representatives have conceded that the company made a mistake in creating such esoteric architecture for PS3, and its strategy for PS4 gives developers more opportunities this time around, notably because the hardware is much more PC-like in its makeup than PS3.

We have confirmed with sources that recently leaked tech specs are accurate. Though Durango devkits offer 8GB of DDR3 RAM, compared to Orbis’s 4GB, Sony’s GDDR5 solution is capable of moving data at 176 gigabytes per second, which should eliminate the sort of bottlenecks that hampered PS3 game performance. Importantly, we’ve learned that Sony has told developers that it is pushing for the final PS4 RAM to match up to Microsoft’s 8GB.

Both platforms are driven by eight-core AMD CPUs clocked at 1.6GHz, with Microsoft opting for a D3D11.x GPU from an unknown source and Sony utilising a more capable solution in AMD’s ‘R10XX’ architecture, alongside the so-called ‘Liverpool’ system-on-chip.

It’s clear Sony has designed a system that, on paper, outperforms Microsoft’s next Xbox. One source familiar with both platforms tells us that in real terms Sony’s console is “slightly more powerful” and “very simple to work with”.

Ultimately, the performance differences between the two consoles will have as much bearing on multiplatform releases as the differences between PS3 and 360 – very little – but Sony will be expecting big-budget firstparty releases such as the PS4 Uncharted sequel to demonstrate its console’s superiority.

Just dont cheap out on the RAM this time! Have at least as much as MS.usable to make a game with (edit : I say usable because it's rumored that MS's underlying OS is a giant RAM hog).

I've been lucky enough to have all my jobs (except 1) that required me to grind pay me by the hour. So when I did grind (sometimes would work for 20 hours straight if there was a deadline) I got a lot of money that month.

That said the majority of the jobs I've had have had little to no grind. I've worked mainly on social games, educational games, artificial intelligence and robotics as a programmer though so take that into account. I've only worked 2 jobs as an artist.

I played the demo for 3 and sort of dismissed it thinking the fighting was a little rough.

Fast forward 2 years later before I was about to leave the country I thought part 4 would be a good way to learn some Japanese. Damn this game is fun! The overall city area is small but it's jampacked with things to do everywhere. The story is so good and the fighting is really fun (not sure if I didnt give 3 enough of a chance or 4 is just a lot better).

I'm looking forward to 100%ing my game when I get back to my ps3 in 8 months but I think my lack of Shogi and MahJong skills are going to prevent that from happening.

How are 1-3 compared to 4? Are they as fun overall? I kind of want to go back and go through the story.

On the other hand back in Canada I saw a ton of people using Ipads on the bus. Those things are ridiculously bulky.

Here in Japan I see 3DS'es out in the wild everywhere. Mainly by people under the age of 30 though and from that 80% is under 18. It's obviously just a Japan thing but they are selling very well here.

I personally hate touch phones for the exact reason they don't have decent game input. Because of that I always just get the cheapest phone I can get because outside of maybe astrid tasks there's nothing that interests me. I just take my Vita or NDS with me when travelling. The Sony phone does appeal to me and the fact that the Sony portable SDK's now simultaneously target both the phone and the Vita from the same codebase might hopefully lead to them having decent games that use the controller too, Time will have to tell on that one.
