I have tons of ref pics from games, if you could make a nice website engine with images taging then I'm in!

I can certainly give you access to the existing tumblr site. That would be great if other mapcorians would like to post images on the blog I can enable submissions by other people via the submit page.

I'm hesitant to switch from tumblr just because it can handle a heavy load of images nicely, has tagging, and a great queuing submission system.

I can also make pages in Tumblr which can essentially categorize images by tag. Of course you can also search by tag as well.

I've begun the process of going through the existing images and tagging them. Hopefully will be done by the weekend.

    Current tags I'm using:

    #urban #rural #japan #decay #dystopian

Really? I never realized that. I've only been playing the computer so it hasn't come up.

Seems like it would be quite a big deal.

So it was fixed with the update?

    ?? Why?

I'm playing it on the Vita btw.

Man I REALLY hope they bring KOFXIII to the Vita. It's perfect for fighters with 4 buttons.

Been playing a lot of Mortal Kombat 9 lately. I'm surprised how good it is as a fighter. I got interested in it when I first saw the EVO finals for it. Also interesting that it was made in the unreal engine.

You should start tagging the images and have a bunch of options at the top of the page for which tag to filter by.

Good point. I'll try to get all the existing images tagged over the next week.

Just wanted to post an update. I've taken a selection from the thousands of photos I've taken form living in Japan and will be posting them up over the next 20 days on the page.

I'm telling you. Urban areas in Japan are amazing for level design inspiration. Especially if you are looking for dystopian influences,

holy shit. Everyone was saying this was gonna be bad a year ago but no one though it was going to be this bad. Polygon just changed their review score from 9.5 to 4 (not just because of the net issues but because they removed features in an attemp to fix them.

Just played swords and sorcery. This game sucks. It's not a game. It's some terrible indie stereotype.

Started playing it right away when I got a PS3, but I think it's probably impossible to beat this game without a guide or lots of time on your hands Having to carry different types of weapons for different types of enemies is so annoying.

I hear ya. I saved with 20 health in a room with a ghost and no weapon to deal with it. I had to reload like 5 times to run out of the room hoping he didn't attack. The game gets really hard really fast.

I did read a guide saying that the ideal number of uniquely tuned weapons is 128 but that's unrealistic so you have to go for a smaller set that covers more bases.

One of my friends has sang all the praises of DotA2 at me, but I'd mainly be playing solo and playing a MOBA by yourself is borderline masochistic. I also find the mixture of delay, turn speeds and slow animations make it feel very unresponsive to me.

While they have nerfed Irelia constantly she is still in a good spot because her kit does so much (mixed damage, heal, very mobile, CC mitigation, etc.). As I understand it Morello was against having champions that have such diverse skill-sets more than anything else, as they are hard to balance... But then they forgot about all that and added Rengar, Kha’Six, Vi, etcetera anyway.

I was never around for the Eve rework, but I’m kind of amazed Karma and Sejuani have been in a bad state for so long. It doesn’t seem like something that would take this long, and even some better numbers until the reworks happen would be beneficial. Sejuani is still full-price too, so I can’t even be cynical about the monetisation aspect.

oh man I forgot about karma and sejuani

Yeah one good thing about stealth is it can be used to cause the other team to spend gold on wards etc. It's kind of a money sink for the other team.

That is my point though it's not overpowered. Eve in lol was like a weaker Riki and they still nerfed her to hell because low levels weren't smart enough to spend money on wards.

I played LoL for about 18 months then got annoyed at all their bullshit patches. I moved to DOTA2 and I much happier on that side of the fence. The learning curve is certainly a lot higher though.

    I still play LoL rarely.

The folks at my office play LoL - that's why I picked it over DOTA2. Is DOTA2 still in closed beta by the way? I remember that they were handing out beta keys like candy not too long ago, but I'd still need to ask someone. Any other key diferences between the two games (aside from the developing studio)?

That's cool. It's always more fun to play the one your friends/co-workers are playing. It's a heavy team game. The main reason I haven't quit LoL entirely.

It's one of those games where on the outside the games are quite similar but on the inside they are different. Essentially DOTA2 practices positive reinforcement. If you do well you get rewarded for it, if you don't do well you get penalized. LoL tends to try to normalize the game to a point where putting in a good early game doesn't benefit your team as much.

    //begin rant

One issue I have with LoL is that a lot of the balance patches are knee-jerk reactions or based off designers preferences For instance the lead designer Morello has said many times how much he hates Irelia and Eve and they have suffered for it. They took everything unique away from Eve and for 1 year essentially annexed her to underpowered, only to patch her after that year taking away everything that was fun about her. In DOTA2 they have Rikimaru (similar if not more profound ability set) and the game is fine.

I remember there was a pattern, Guinsoo designers a unique fun character then Morello removes everything fun and unique about the character.

    //end rant

I have to plain disagree with the doom vs halo comparison there. Mind you as i said I primarily played halo1 and halo2. If it's changed in halo3+ then I really can't comment.

I would call those games the opposite of sandbox combat.

.The statement "It was basically fight a bunch of guys to get to the next checkpoint." doesn't make much sense. This is what the vast majority of FPSs are about, and most of them work quite well despite it. You could easily take the same statement with any other genre. The difference is, when you compare Halo to most other shooter-campaigns, is that you're given a lot more freedom in the level design. If you play the same checkpoint over and over it wouldn't get boring because of; intelligent enemies, diverse game elements (banshees, tanks, ghosts, variety of weapons) and most importantly the open-ended approach to it. When you replay levels you're unlikely to get very similar playthroughs (unlike other FPSs), or you're at least not restricted by having to play them the same way. Halo allows for a lot more creativity than most shooters. This was even more fun with co-op and vehicles. I agree, though, that some levels like Library and Cortana were absolute shit.

Just because the vast majority of FPS'es employ this technique doesn't necessarily mean it's a great design technique. I don't particularly like the fact COD etc does this either. In fact I really only play COD for the multiplayer.

Compare it to something like doom where you have a more environment littered with secrets and variable paths through the level. That's what I like. Sure you could argue the keys cause the wide design to have some linearity, but not to the extreme that halo does.
