^^ Basically anything that requires a major change to one of their core systems. Unfortunately I have to be vague because these are commercial projects I've been involved in. I wish I could say more.

I guess you could say AA-AAA games? It's kind of hard to for me to know what those are these days

Let me put it this way. If you were trying to make a graphically high fidelity game that was something fairly safe that Unity was designed for like a single player third person game then you shouldn't have too many problems. Unity is just very rigid in it's program structure in a way that makes changing it potentially more difficult than writing something from scratch.

I don't understand the fascination with creating a mobile game with Unreal. It's a unwieldy beast and you won't even get to use the big boy features.

    Quote from Pericolos0

That's really what I like so much about unity, you only turn on the big boy features if you want them.. By default it's all clean and lightweight.

I just converted my game to unity 5, it went surprisingly smooth! The only thing I really need to fix up was a change they made to how the mouse cursor gets hidden, everything else just worked . Way easier than the change from 3 to 4, which required me to do significant rewrites.

Using unreal for mobile would be for the blueprints and much better and more logical codebase. Unreal has such amazing clean and functional bones. Unity on the other hand, from a programmers perspective is a mess. Of course if you don't use either of those things much (say you prefer playmaker and barely do any coding in your unity project) then maybe Unreal isn't a whole lot better.

Unity seems to basically collapse into itself once you scale up beyond simple mobile games. You can certainly get it working but the amount of work it takes from the engineers to get those features up makes it not worth it.

I don't fault them for not moving away from the Novell mono license since Xamarin's is too costly but I can't help but wonder how much better unity would have been if they didn't have to spend so many resources just hacking shit on to it to keep it running via Mono 2.0.

I wouldn't call default Unity "clean and lightweight" though. I'd call it the opposite. Haxeflixe or Corona I would say fit that criteria more closely.

Have you tried ProBuilder? I always hear people talking about it:

Holy shit probuilder is amazing. Every unity project I work on or start has to have this installed. It makes prototyping so much better.

Not entirely relevant for this post, but what the hell is up with the adverts now?

I realise these are real people posting not bots which makes it harder, but I checked new content this morning and 4-5 posts in a row were lame advertising from a total random.

I genuinely have no problem someone from here posting about a game they're working on though... Please just tell me if I'm being a grumpy, old man though.

Yeah I hate that shit. It almost killed tigsource for a while until they made a special forum that's basically a giant garbage dumping ground for that stuff.

monster hunter 4 ultimate addiction is starting to creep in. A lot of people at work play it so it's like I have fellow heroine addicts to support my self destructive lifestyle.

also playing gemenie rue on a tablet. Now this is a great game for tablets. Good story and the puzzles are neither easy nor frustrating.

SFV beta was awesome this weekend, average 1 min connect times. Yesterday I went no loss for an approx 15 game set.

The link windows are still hard but combos don't extend that much like they do in SF4 and normals do more damage so the end result is if you practice fundamentals you are going to do a lot better. I've always been weak on execution so that's good for me

    Quote from Sentura

No PS4 yet, desperately want to try SFV out, not sure if it's worth the wait to get on PC or if I should just get a PS4 to play the beta...

I believe the beta comes to PC very soon.

    Quote from Taylor

We could play some games and see how it goes. Honestly, I don't get to play online against people very much (I've done about 10 ranking matches) and we stopped playing fighting games at work because Rocket League is amazing.

Sure sounds good. I just upgraded my internet to some supposed gamer tier and setup a game tv on wired internet. I'm on a crunch week this week but then there is a long holiday weekend. I'll be playing a lot then. I believe you are already on my PSN too.

I might agree on a 6 face button pad but playing a 6 button game with the shoulders mapped really hurts my execution (and cramps my hand).

I'm still having fun with Rising Thunder, I'm actually playing on a 360 pad because the game wont work with any of my 4 ps3/ps4 sticks :(. Playing with the analog stick is kind of rough but at least with this game there's no motion execution for anything. Is the double input for the super an optional thing? Because I have it mapped to L2 right now.

I've also been playing a fair amount of GGxrd but I fear you are WAY above my level.I consciously don't use a few moves like roman cancel often yet because it's a lot of information to hold in my head (but when they work, whooo boy that's fun). I'm maining mostly Chipp and Millia right now.

Millia is particualrly fun to play and I love the sound effects of her specials. It's like a from some 70's sci fi movie.

This suggests "GOW with gravity manipulation" or "COD with gravity manipulation", depending if they go TPS or FPS… then like Friechamp said.

@AlexM don't think you can diss the guy like that, you like it or not GoW as been one of the most influential games of last decade basically.

He's also credited for stuff on Fat Princess, bulletstorm and Lost Planet, sort of a Romero for Epic

I think you mis-interpreted my post. If you re-read it I was saying I disliked a map he didn't actually author. I wasn't trying to imply I also thought GoW was also one of the worst games in addition to facing worlds. I genuinely wasn't sure what other games he worked on.

GoW isn't a game I loved but I don't hate it either. I can respect it for what it did at the time even if it hasn't aged. Fat Princess though, THAT was a fun game.

EDIT : Romero for Epic? Now THAT'S blasphemy :D

Personally this was always one of the games I found most interesting on the WiiU but couldnt justify buying the console for one game.

  • How do you decide on what to play?

    • AlexM
    • August 22, 2015 at 8:59 PM

My backlog of games I really want to play is huge so I usually just pick from that. I've certainly got into selection paralysis when trying to decide what to play next but this year I've kind of said fuck it and just ask myself what I really want to play right now. I find that often I know what I really want to play, I'm just not being totally honest with myself.

If they make a ps4 version they better have the Vita as a second screen option.

It was a great series but it's not exactly the type of game I'd want to play through more than once. Uncharted 1 is pretty rough going back.

SFV was up again last night and worked marvelously! Really interesting the subtle changes. I like how when chun-li ducks it animates like SFIII

There seems to be more priority on the animation which has the potential to be a bad thing but right now it feels good. Capcom did a good job balancing animation priority. In fact they used it to their advantage. It makes weak hits canceling larger hits more profound now.
