...interestingly enough this is also what Microsoft says and while the hyenas fight over the scraps, Nintendo feasts itself on a big, juicy chunk of expanded audience. Blue Ocean strategy at its best, Kaz Hirai should sit down and take notes instead of just running his mouth again.

That line's especially funny because I remember when the PS3 was new/still in development Sony was saying it was going to replace the PC.

I've actually heard a bunch of bad things about this, at least from the PC elitists. Poor widescreen support, can't map mouse4 and 5 (even though you could in FEAR), worse AI and action than the original game.

Anyway, yeah, definitely something different from Io, although this is still a murder simulator, just with dudes turning into animals instead of bleeding all over the walls

    Lol, Sonic reference?

Yes and then keep on making levels to advertise your site. You will not earn more than pocket money though.Unrelated, we should all start up a mapcore second life group, and make crap buildings there and sell them

    Cant be too difficult.

A friend of mine codes up stuff for second life and sells them and makes enough money off of it to support buying games and running a website and server. Apparently it truly is piss easy to get people to pay for simple things in SL. Some of the stuff he makes is teleport pads. You can teleport natively in Second Life, his products just let you do it without having to use a menu, and they sell like hotcakes.

that was what i was thinking and yet fileplanet and many other sites weasel themselves out of this by charging for the "bandwidth" !

Fileplanet and those similar sites are deplorable, but what they charge for is download priority- you get to skip their artificial download lines and limits. The only thing on Fileplanet you can't get with a free account and patience are the exclusive open beta deals they occasionally sign with publishers (last one I remember was for Quake Wars).

You're trying to get blood from a stone, sorry dude. People just don't view custom content as something to pay for, players or producers of the content. It's something you do for fun, what you get out of it is purely the enjoyment of creation, with a little resume work on the side The mapper/player relationship is not one of salesman and customer. It's one of two different fans both doing something they enjoy purely as a recreational hobby.

On top of that, if your map is worth playing at all 99% of the people who encounter it will do so from downloading it automatically from a server running the map in its playlist.

Trying to charge for downloads is also against pretty much every mod/custom content EULA I know of. Certainly for Source.

Good news, everybody: Filefront is A-ok. That's all I really cared about out of the 1up network, and the only thing I've noticed changed is the screen it loads post-download.

I'd rather watch a Uwe film than the mindless, effects ridden shit Marvel produce. They have the budget and the IP, the stories and characters are more two dimensional than the comics they're derived from though.

Hey, Iron Man was awesome, and Punisher was mediocre but still better than a Boll movie.

The rest of them are total shit though

didn't 3dr do Prey and other games as well? doesn't sound like they could not affort an engine after all...

They produced Prey, it was made by Human Head. And that's old enough to count as old, certainly. They haven't done anything since then that really matters (I think a cell phone Duke game or something like that).

They haven't really done anything that was released in studio since Duke 3d.

There's more polys in that stripper's butt than the entirety of duke's head and shoulders by the looks of it. :

The awesomeness of deferred shading (my guess). Still surprised though... most other developers manage to make highres screenshots and resize these.

I'm still eager for the Duke.

Which would suggest they've updated to Unreal 3. That would be a pretty shocking move though, not the least because I don't know where 3DR would get the money for the $500,000 license. Their primary income as far as I know is just old games selling on digital distro.

if this is improvised comedy i tip my head to you ... and if this is true .. i do the same actually

would have loved to read it.

everybody is of course entitled to love everything they want to.

but if somebody is seriously going to say that deus ex is better than hl ss2 or fallout than you that person just made my "high on crack people" list

Unfortunately true. The commercials were from a kindly old white dude with a mustache. The consultation for finding out what we wanted? Same old kindly white dude with a mustache. He even gave us a bobble head of himself, very surreal. When it comes time to install the carpet and tiles? Mexican guys who can barely speak english. They fucked up what materials they brought on saturday, when I had scheduled it, so I got to stay home today to supervise a rain check. They also fucked up again but this time since they came early they could go back and get the right stuff the same day, but I've been babysitting carpet guys for about 10 hours now. They kept knocking my modem power cord out of place, and then they ended up knocking out the entire power block thing.

I just got back from the store where I bought a new, bigger one, that screws right into the electric socket. Let's see 'em knock it out now, huh?

....I mean, if they ever come back. They actually managed to finish today.

Basically, there are a lot of RPG and "for the realism" stuff you either didn't appreciate or didn't notice in Deus Ex. You CAN destroy cameras- they are armored, and have minimum damage values before they get hurt. Advanced rifle + Sniper, advanced melee + DTS, or any explosive would do it, not to mention security terminals are typically easy to get to and break into. The DTS is way overpowered... if you're within melee range. You can't exactly block bullets with it like a Jedi and pretty much all your enemies carry guns. If you want a REALLY overpowered gun, how about the pistol. Master pistol is 100% accurate from any range, and is an instant kill for everything in the game except MJ12 armored commandos (take two shots), Karkians, and Walton Simons. Pretty much every weapon can be utilized well and kick ass if you put skill points into it and mod it. That's the RPG aspect- if you put all your skill points into one basket (by your post I'm guessing rifles), the weapons left at Untrained will suffer in accuracy and damage. Same with lockpicking and electronic hacking. Unless you put points into those categories, you'll require more disposable picks and electric tools, and you'll progress slower. Hacking works the same way- the fewer points you've invested into it, the slower you hack, leaving you less time to work, and the less options you get with security.

Also, press F2. There's a note system that automatically records most names/passes, and you can write and delete your own for stuff you find hidden in emails and whatnot.

Also the main menu theme can be changed in the options. It's got all the options for window and text colors as Windows itself, funnily enough given your comparison.

It's also accessable easily when you die. When you're dead and the camera's hovering above you, quickload and esc both work fine. Quickload quickloads, esc opens the menu. After sitting watching your body for about 20 seconds the game will go back to the main menu and title screen on its own.

and halfe-life is from 98 and has none of those technical issues and correct me f i am wrong but unreal was already at that point considered much more technically sophisticated than quake 1 or "goldsource".

And you don't think the constant engine updates and support the currently active and working and profitable Valve has given Half-life, something the dead and gone Ion Storm cannot provide for its game, has anything to do with it.

I wrote up this big long counterpoint to Warby's post but the mexican guys putting new tiles in my foyer knocked out the power and I lost it. The gist of it though was that you basically ignored the RPG stuff, the attempt at realism, world-wise, the game was designed for, and that it's 8 years old on a 12 year old engine. DX's engine was originally designed for Pentium 1's and 3dFX glide, for chrissakes.

    Quote from Steppenwolf

You cant be serious about all the technical nitpicking can you? It's a game from freaking 2000. Why complain about the voice acting? Most games didn't even had that back then or very limited. Or why do you compare features to Dead Space, a 2008 game? Gfx and sound were top notch back then and the sandboxy gameplay revolutionary. Not to mention that the whole fps/rpg hybrid thing was kinda new, except for the two System Shock titles by the same company and Hired Guns on Amiga. If you don't believe me check out some old reviews.http://%7boption%7d

Deus Ex's graphics were mediocre at best even for 2000. Complicated behind the scenes stuff, big levels, and an old engine meant it couldn't quite do what other games of the time were doing, graphically. It DID have a fantastic design for its time, though. It combined the low def models and textures and stuff to make a very believable world. A New York street looked completely believably like a New York street, and you can't say anything similar about many games from the turn of the century.
