Wait a second... why don't Americans look for work overseas where the situation is not so bad? Ok sure not everyone can do such a major change in their lifestyle but I find it hard to accept that all 12% are out of work. Not when so many develoeprs are hiring still. Games, Movies and TV industry are familiar with moving aboard to work on projects, it's common practice.

I'm under the impression that permanently or at least long-term moving to a different country is an extremely taxing process that takes just about forever. I know a few people that moved to Japan and getting through all the paperwork and government requirements was pretty much a new full-time job for a couple months worth of work and headache. It's apparently even worse if you've got family or a spouse.

i still don't see how this compares to carmack sorry..

To get the comparison between carmack and silverman you have to look at what they were doing when they were both making commercial games- Build engine vs Doom 2/Quake engine (Quake came out half a year after Duke3d).

    I try.

I've been replying the Cave Voxlap demo and man is it fun to do nothing but just shoot little procedurally generated cubes and have them blow up.

He doesn't want to get back in the industry or do anything with it as far as I know.

signing a non-compete doesn't mean you can't do your own work in your spare time so why didn't he cook up this super amazing engine you are talking about at home in his 3 years off?

It's really neat. Obviously not commercial-quality but it's made by one guy in his parent's basement, forging a path of 3d that pretty much nobody else has done significant work in, so there's no online tutorials or other people's work to build off of here.

You sound bitter, dude. Sure, he's far from alone in being screwed over. But that doesn't mean that it's not a shame. Think of where the game industry might be today if we got a Build 2 to compete with IDTech3 and Unreal. Hell, Ken's Laybrinth was published by Epic, think of how differently the Unreal engine itself might've turned out if Epic had picked up Silverman post-Duke3d.

In these positions, you're given access to extremely sensitive information that can totally destroy the next few years of the company if they were to come out.

Like what? I can't imagine what sort of information could be enough to "destroy the next few years of a company". There's a ton of secrecy about stuff in games, and I've never really "gotten" it.

Seems to me like a non-compete is less about keeping secrets and more about "If I can't have it, nobody can!"

I saw someone claim that it's the Pyro because the spy says "My little cauliflower" and the Pyro's purse has a flower on it.

That $500 build is nice. That $700 build is about the most I'd ever want from a current PC.

Where is the evidence they screwed him over! You are just saying he signed a non compete contract.

That put him (a guy people referred to at the time as "John Carmack's biggest rival") pretty much permanently out of the game industry. Ever since Duke3d Ken Silverman's been living in his parent's house, made a couple proof of concept engines that went nowhere (besides Voxlap which spawned a 10 minute long "Voxelstein" game, which was admittedly totally fucking awesome), and some image codecs for .png and SLR camera images.

Dude Silverman joined 3DRealms as a teenager as his one and only game development job, and he wasn't seeking it out either. He saw how neat Wolfenstein 3d was as a kid and tried to recreate it on his own with Ken's Labyrinth, sent a floppy of it to ID/Apogee/Epic Megagames, and he ended up getting head-hunted by that circle of Texas developers. He started work on the Build engine when he was only 18. I doubt he could read a single sentence of the contract he was handed, and didn't care because surely these nice cool game development guys wouldn't screw him over!

Uh yes but those games all came out like 10 years ago so if he never received royalties for them then why the hell did he stay at 3DRealms? Seems kind of weird...

He left 3DR in the late nineties or so and they stopped sending him royalty checks in 2003.

How 3DR treated Ken Silverman is one of my biggest reasons for hating them, actually. They pretty much treated him like shit and stuck him on a non-compete contract that was in effect for a few YEARS. Completely removed him from the videogame industry permanently, a guy with the talent to be up there with Carmack and Sweeney in creating engines.

    royalties for what?

Do you not know who Ken Silverman is? He created the Build engine, Duke3d's engine (and Blood's engine, and Shadow Warrior's engine). From the recent XBLA port alone he should be owed quite a lot of money.

I wish them luck. I'm actually rooting for Take2 on this one. The reason is: 3D Realms hasn't paid my royalties since 2003, so I probably ought to be suing them, too. I'd be curious to know if other former employees have been treated this way. On the topic of 3DR shutting down, I would blame the management - George and Scott - for failing to see reality.

Take Two's gonna end up owning the Duke IP anyway ahahahahaha

Turns out that when Take Two bought GoD, as part of the deal that included publishing rights to DNF, 3D Realms got $12 million. Some money from T2 HAS ended up at 3DR, and they're PISSED about it.

    Always bet on Duke
