While I can't appreciate Arma 2 directly, seeing as I don't have nearly the hardware to run it, I certainly can appreciate awesome stuff like this:

Neither of those two have done anything good ever since. Alice was decent but that was it.

id have been way late on releasing Doom 3's source, so it hasn't really been something worth expecting in years anyway.

"We're really getting kind of tired competing with our own publishers in terms of how our titles will be featured," Carmack said. "And we've really gotten more IPs than we've been able to take advantage of. And working with other companies hasn't been working out as spectacularly as it could. So the idea of actually becoming a publisher and merging Bethesda and ZeniMax on there [is ideal.] It would be hard to imagine a more complementary relationship. They are triple A, top-of-the-line in what they do in the RPGs. And they have no overlap with all the things we do in the FPSes."

This is probably going to end up costing me. Before? No console game purchases, no need. Now? I feel like I need to justify the thing by having something not Wii Sports to play on it.

Preferably something I'm good at. Wii Sports baseball kicked the shit out of me, every hit was a long high fly right into the hands of an outfielder, every pitch was a fastball straight down the center of the plate to perfectly set up a homerun, and Wii Boxing barely registered my punches.

My mom bought me a Wii... for $360 from the home shopping network. The package doesn't even include a second controller, just the wheel attachment and Wii Fit.

Fuuuck I have asked her SO MANY TIMES to screen her tech purchases by me, she never listens. I guess she kinda gets a pass for not doing it this time since it's my birthday in a week and a half, but still, goddamn what a lousy deal.

It's not about being currently popular, but rather being a collection of gamer community history.

I still to this day use the tutorials on PlanetDeusEx though.

-> The Hosting Services will end on 11.59 PM, August 31st, 2009.-> No backups or snapshots will be maintained after that date (download everything you wish to keep). You will no longer have access to your site or any aspects of it (content, assets, files etc.) after that date and we will remove/delete all such files from our servers.

I can't find any other reference to this online, but if it's true (and it wouldn't surprise me in the least, IGN's basically the most money grubbing network on the entire internet and killing off freely hosted content seems like a popular thing for them especially), a lot of internet gaming history could suddenly be lost. In particular, I'm thinking of PlanetDeusEx, which hosts like 90% of everything regarding DX, it's old community, it's production, and modding tutorials on the internet, particularly the Universal Constructor, and Witchboy's Cauldron, written by Harvey Smith himself.

People are all butthurt over GTA4 and how it's high settings pretty much require a quad core. I don't know how long they expected "Get a dual core, games don't use four cores, use that money to get a better video card instead!" would last, but now it's officially no longer valid, because games are using it. Enjoy having to buy a new machine or having to socket a new CPU (both incredibly annoying tasks). GTA4 on a quad core machine runs great.

Guiding a player in a dark, alien place, where the player can move 360° (flying in zero-g) and doesn't have a map surely wasn't very easy in Crysis. Lightbeams, color coding, sounds and as many landmarks as possible - still some people got lost.

I think the best solution for this I can think of is to just make the right paths big. Any path that's not the right path and there for an ammo cache or enemy spawn or whatever is small.

Did Crytek study Descent for those levels?

Looking at the rio slums gives me vertigo.

I agree though, when I heard the location I GIS'd it and got really excited, Sao Paolo looks like a really neat environment for a game, but then the screens are all generic south america.

Plus with the non-english setting we might lose out on TV shows and guard banter, so the game may not have any funny either

In early 3d games it was pretty easy to tell where to go, becuase at a glance you can tell if a door's a wall texture or a real door, and what parts of the wall are movers because of the lightmap outline.

They missed a bunch of the stuff used in Left 4 Dead, too, like the lighting hints- players will always want to move from dark -> light, so that's the path they'll follow if there's a lit area that would otherwise be out of the way or nothing important looking.

Excellent the0rthopaedicsurgeon, colors give a nice abandoned mood. Just one thing not very important, at the first look it makes me think to an US town but it seems to be more Japan (temple, signs...) maybe the american cars aren't welcome.

That's not an American car. I dunno what it is but it's not American.

Funny how much plant models made for a game set in PA, USA fits in Japan. Everything I've seen of their nature geography makes me think the climates and plant life are similar. I've even got a couple cherry blossom trees in front of my local public library, every spring the gutters are clogged with pink crap.
