Doesn't look like Borderlands to me.When I think of that art style, with the cartoony filters on everything, I think flat coloration and black border outlines.

    [Blocked Image: http://i.imgur.com/1fkVy.jpg]

RAGE has neither of these things. It doesn't look particularly cartoony to me at all except maybe in character design. I'm not entirely sure how to describe the art style. "video gamey" comes to mind.

the entire trailer also made me question who the possible protagonist of the game will be, or whether it was just a scene to show the "zombification" of an island, and if it was the latter, why not show something more interesting than a family in a hotel fending off zombies.

What could be more interesting? It was intended to have a poignant, personal tragedy to showcase the larger tragedy of everyone getting killed by zombies. A montage of a bunch of different people getting killed would be more impersonal as there would be no time to feel for these characters before we move on to the next, leaving the trailer feeling like "just another zombie thing". The point of the trailer was to set a mood and cultivate anticipation for the game based on that. Being generic would go against that and make people dismissive.

Am I the only one not bored of zombie games now? ;P

I see this sentiment around and don't really get it. There have been a decent amount of games with zombies in them but what kind of enemies are in a game seems like a weird thing to get tired of. There are a whole hell of a lot more games with russians/terrorists (used interchangeably). I don't really consider zombies as a sort of novelty that can get old on its own, any more than any other bad guy, and apocalyptic end of the world scenarios aren't something I'm remotely near bored of. The kind of game Dead Island is supposed to be is something I'm really interested in.

And for the record, D3 looks much better than Diablo 2

Agree with this, D2's style is hit really bad by the resolution limitations. It's like the 2d equivalent of PS1 3d. Fallout 1 has the same problem imo, both games are ugly now.

    D3 looks amazing.

I bought Shatter during the holiday sale on steam, and just now got around to playing it. Man, that's a fun game, which is at least 90% due to the soundtrack. The boss battles are so great. Those circular levels totally mess with my head though.

Interesting that after watching the trailer and reading the article I'm left really curious about it. Does weapon damage have the same sort of damage detail as the zombies, or is my wrench going to go from "bloody hunk of metal" to "useless bloody hunk of metal" on a certain swing and then I have to pick up a new thing? Will things take a long time to break or is this a Silent Hill Origins setup? Will there be portable TV items that one hit kill enemies if so?

The only console so far that managed to stay away from piracy for a while was the PS3 but those days are gone.

The video I saw of the hackers breaking down PS3 security details, including smug "trophy unlocks" as part of their powerpoint presentation on how terrible PS3 security really was was some great stuff. It really drove home the point that the only reason the platform hadn't been broken was because nobody bothered to try, because Other OS support was already there. I think that makes a pretty reasonable stand against all the wink wink nudge nudge "homebrewers are really just pirates" talk. Personally, I've got my Wii homebrewed so it can play DVDs. It's just stupid that the feature isn't included when that's standard on everything else (well, everything good that is) for the last two generations.

L4D2 "Confogl" matches. Confogl is a custom server setup that decreases spawn timers, increases infected damage, removes weapons beyond Tier 1 (smgs, pump shotguns, hunting rifles (of which you only get one per team)), removes health packs, and makes other items like pipe bombs and pills rarer. On top of that the matches I've been getting into have been using the !buffsi setting, which increases SI damage and decreases their cooldown. I'm actually pretty good, but shit going wrong is an inevitability these sorts of matches, with those balance changes. Thankfully these are just between friends and not actually something in the competitive "scene".

Just how big do you think the PC platform is for games compared to consoles?

Pretty damn big, but then most people like to ignore chinese mmos and russian games when they think of the games industry

    Quote from Rick_D

Thrik man, you're forgetting that not everyone who would pirate a game would actually buy it if they had to spend money on it. there's a gap in the market between those who could become customers, but pirate instead, and those who wouldn't become customers if there was no pirating.

this is an interesting little myth. if you want something, then you buy it. if you can't afford it or don't really want it, then you don't buy it.

where piracy differs is that we can take it and never worry about buying.

it's very easy to look at the current situation and say "oh but those games, movies, albums, i wouldn't have bought those anyway" - but that's because you know how easy it was to pirate them. if piracy did not exist, or was vastly more inconvenient then things would be a lot different.

as it stands it's impossible for you to say 100% that pirates would not have bought the game. and while there's people that say they wouldn't have bought it anyway, there's also a lot of shit talking faggots out there.

this is not even a debate, i don't really want to read your reply. thanks. o/

People who use homophobic slurs in general speech are far worse than pirates.

This is a really good trailer. Wonder why it's 360 footage though? Now would be the perfect time to release some PC footage.

Also REALLY GLAD to see weapon customization is back! YAY.

However I do feel more strongly against pirates rather than used game buyers because most of the latter don't understand the implications, whereas pirates almost always do. There's absolutely no excuse for piracy if you're past school. While I can kind of sympathise with the 'I'm a student' argument, there's absolutely nothing stopping any student from getting a job and doing an honest day's work to pay for their games.

While I completely understand feeling stronger about piracy, I wouldn't agree that "pirates almost always understand the implications". From what I've seen most game pirates have a view much like music pirates do, of the industry being a big monolothic, abusive, faceless entity, that should be spurned. A lot of gamers don't really see a difference between, say, Ice Pick Lodge and Activision. It's morally convenient for them to consider them equally, as "The Man", much as music pirates don't look past the RIAA to see individual artists, studios, engineers, labels etc. and justify their downloading that way. Even in that article by Jim Sterling, raging so hard against PC gamers (he really doesn't portray that group as separate in any way from pirates), justifies excusing pirating music over games because "musicians earn all their money from concerts".

Also, getting a job can actually be pretty difficult. I've been unemployed now except small time stuff for two years. My area's shedding jobs left and right. A local company exploding a few months ago (literally: It was a natural gas distributor and all their tanks exploded, and leaving the building nothing but a big crater) didn't help.

relevant to current events: This just got leaked.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011- ... ked-online

Off topic of the actual leak itself, it seems really weird to me that a "non-3d" copy of the game can shed half the game's size, over 20GB. I can only imagine it's a shitload of prerendered 3d video or something.

I honestly don't see piracy as that big a deal, in the big picture. It's one of many things that could impact things, for example used sales, unfortunate release dates overshadowing smaller games, pricing, regions, advertising strategy, publisher support, fads and trends. In particular I see used games as a much bigger deal, because to the average gamer it FEELS legit. After all, you're walking into a nice, clean business, spread across the country, and paying money for a product. It's legal, it's popular, and it doesn't give one single penny to the original creator of that product. Those people who are willing to pay money for games, and are being sidetracked into paying a reseller instead of paying the people who made the game, seems to me a much bigger issue, and something that actually can be effected, than pirates, who are not willing to, or frequently able to, pay for the things they consume, many of whom bask in the perceived 'rebel' culture of downloading what you want without payment or restriction.

A friend of mine's been running a Minecraft server, for the last two nights I've stayed up depressingly late at night exploring, ruining ecosystems, and building stuff.

    [Blocked Image: http://i.imgur.com/H4arn.jpg]

This is made entirely of sandstone, about 800 units worth, which required harvesting 2400 units of sand. I was wholesale pulling up entire beaches while listening to podcasts and zoning out. That highest level is at the top level available to build. There are four levels, and at the very top is a smiley face on the roof, facing the sky. On the opposite side is a floating island farm with water flowing down on the sandstone path out to it, forming waterfalls down the other side of the mountain I've built on, running down into a lake at the base.

Also this whole thing is about two ingame days of walking from the spawnpoint. I'm not ENTIRELY clear on the path from spawn to the tower actually, that's how far it is. Somewhere in the middle I built a sandstone and brick structure with a staircase down to a bunch of lava pools, and surrounding that were the beaches I ruined for my sandstone.

"With almost depressing inevitability" lol. Jim Sterling is basically the Glenn Beck of games.

That reminds me, did they ever stop however all those 360 games were getting leaked? I haven't payed attention to it in a few months but I remember people saying it was during disc printing that copies were getting ripped, on just about every notable release, weeks early.

Maybe at some point they'll make a smaller version. I feel like Mirror's Edge's gameplay would be better suited to a $20 DD game than a $60 retail game. I personally didn't have it in me to finish the game, it felt too repetitive. I got to the point where that one guy was shot, around there.

Well it is kinda a bummer. It makes Crytek look bad that it was leaked in the first place, and spoilers are gonna get out there, and there's all this drama now when people talk about the game, instead of actually talking about the game. Definitely not a good thing. I would imagine they'd rather people associate "awesome kill stuff explosions new york aliens fuck yeah" with crysis 2 instead of "Oh man game leak piracy PC is dead blah blah blah"

I would think that the leak would hurt more in that it could possibly make the game look bad, missing bug testing/polish/options than that people are pirating it and being satisfied with the leak for their fill of Crysis. It's why I'm still waiting impatiently for that demo.

    also:

    [Blocked Image: http://i.imgur.com/TsR98.png]

EA endorsing the leak. SHOCKING! I actually clicked the link to see what they had to say, and I see that's where the whole "hurting the PC" line came from. I agree with the commenters on the post (though as you go down they quickly become as coarse as seldoon ), that's not really an appropriate pointing of fingers. That pirates are downloading it is inconsequential to that it was leaked in the first place.

Edit: Looked at TPB and there's less than 5000 people with the leak. That's not really a make or break number for overall expected performance, considering the first game sold millions just on PC.

I'm honestly not going to buy this on release because EA's been putting PC games at $60 recently, which is about double what I pay for any game these days because I am poor and/or cheap I will definitely buy it during the first big steam sale though, promise! I did the same thing for Crysis 1.
