Is that Nemesis? I really hope not because Nemesis was the most annoying fella i've ever met in my gaming life.

Nemesis was absolutely terrifying when I was a kid. That part in the police station where he jumps through a window without warning... carrying a rocket launcher? I jumped and died and swore the RE3 off for a month before going back to it.

I played Crysis 1 recently (though didn't finish it, got sidetracked by Fallout New Vegas's release ), and yeah, it really wasn't THAT open of a game, not as much as Far Cry for example. The first few levels are much more open but then like an hour in I recall going down a thin path next to a river and up a mountain, and soon after that was when there's the first alien spotting and you regroup with your squad, and from pretty much there on, it's all pretty much a chain of arena fields that I played. There's plenty of SPACE, but that's mostly about circling around objectives, not really a choice in how to proceed. Suited me fine, but again, not enough to keep me going through the whole game. I never even fought the aliens everyone complained about.

Actually, the main reason I bought it was because of that Mechwarrior mod... and then I never got around to playing that either. >_>

Anyway, I remember playing Far Cry 1 and being absolutely stunned by how big the first level was (either the first or the second). It was absolutely enormous with no loading until I had to go into a half sunken boat (for reasons I cannot recall).

":16dremed]Obviously, some adaptations needed to be made, console market is a whole different market. And, it's where the MONEY is! Unfortunately, the times where you could focus on PC, top of the line tech and make money with it, is gone! You will never have exclusives AAA PC games anymore, simply because these take millions and millions of dollars to be made, and you're lucky if you sell 500 000 copies!

Uh, that's what Crysis 1 did and it sold like 2M+... I remember even right after release EA bragging about how they broke their sales expectations by a lot. Not that I begrudge being platform agnostic, except in that I miss games that are designed with the speed of mice in mind. I buy more new games on my Wii these days than my PC, on PC I get by on sales.

Does "I wish it was Timesplitters" count?

I haven't bought the game yet because I don't have $60 to spend on videogames right now, I just played the demo.

^This. With their last couple of games that have been pretty great, I think we can give them the benefit of the doubt on this one before we jump to conclusions. Wait until we know and see more =P.

Rockstar isn't a single dev, I seem to recall this was being made by some side Rockstar studio.

Edit: Rockstar Vancouver, the dev behind Bully, according to wikipedia. The last few Rockstar games have been Rockstar North (GTA) or Rockstar San Diego (Red Read).

I was off the internet for a couple days (not fun), so I wasted time by replaying Evil Dead Fistful of Boomstick, an Xbox game from 2003. It was kinda refreshing to play a game that doesn't fit into the now standardized gameplay roles we have today. I guess at the time they'd call this game an "Action Adventure", but I can't think of any other game that it plays like, except maybe superficially tomb raider. As Ash, you run around open levels, killing things and completing tasks on your "To Do" list. Frequently it's finding a person or thing somewhere in Dearborn, or to solve a puzzle. The whole game is set in Dearborn, Michigan, with different levels being different parts of town, or in different periods of history later on. You have two attack buttons, X and A, defaulting to your shotgun and chainsaw of course. You can swap out these weapons for other things, for example you can find a flamethrower or a minigun to go on your chainsaw stump, or pistols, dynamic, shovels, etc. to hold in your left hand. When using guns you can hold left trigger to target the nearest enemy, otherwise when you attack you attack in the direction Ash is facing. If you hold right trigger you can also do spells, fueled by energy gotten from killing deadites.

It's definitely not as "good" as a modern game (mostly due to camera issues you'd expect from a game from this era), but I had fun with it. It was really fucking hard for one thing, and not in an unfair way, just an unforgiving way: They never, ever give you free health. Enemies will rarely drop bandages that automatically restore 1/3 or so of a heart when collected, and you can find statically placed medkits that heal 2 full hearts, but both of these things are in short supply, and there are enemies everywhere, and if they get to you they do 1/2 to 1 hearts of damage per attack and can easily swarm you. Despite individual enemies dying easily enough to chainsaw swings, they still are a threat.

Really, the main complaint I have is that the boss fights were all pretty bogus. The first one you have to use the shovel to knock back incoming attacks, like that one Zelda boss, except they don't really give you any indicator of this except that when you die and restart the level you default to holding the shovel. The other two, including the final boss, are too easy once you figure out the gimmick: Shoot barrels, and interrupt the attack with a dynamite throw, respectively.

CoP autosaves whenever you move to a different map, sleep (I think), or anytime there's any status change to a quest line.

I like quicksaves for moments where I intentionally do something that might get me killed to see if I can do it or if there's any benefit, like exploring acid/lava in Doom/Duke3d, or jumping through the fan in Area 51 in Deus Ex. But autosaves are definitely a necessity no matter what.

MGS1 would be hard to play due to antiquated controls and the weird issues 3d PS1 games had with jumpy warping surfaces but I just don't understand finding the game unplayable simply due to it being low res. I've been playing SE4 lately, and a friend of mine is trying to get me to start a project to remake it/make a game inspired by it. Not because oh it's terrible how it's all low res sprites in an 800x600 game, but because its multiplayer was made back before we discovered whatever magic lets us play multiplayer games without having issues due to ports, IPs, and firewalls, and its play by email feature closes the game after every turn you take, making using dropbox to share the save back and forth a pain in the ass.

Meanwhile, Half-life 1 controls just like any other FPS that's been released in the last nearly 15 years since Quake. WASD, mouse movement, left mouse to shoot, space to jump. It doesn't even look that bad IMO, it's not like it's going for photorealism, 99% of what you see are aliens. The Thief games look relatively equal in graphics to HL1, do you guys also consider those unplayable? Because I consider them still peerless in what kind of thing they do. >_>

We have a lot of fans who havent even played the original and are waiting for black mesa to experience it.

That's kind of terrible. :/ Half-life 1 is hardly unplayable, and it gives you access to some of the greatest mods in history... Makes me sad that people would reject it just because a fan remake is promised at some unspecified point in the future.

Ha. I've closed off an entire empire of aliens in SE4 by camping a single Seeker Parasite ship on the warp gate out of their home corner of the galaxy. They keep attacking me trying to get out, possibly accidentally by trying to warp through, because I've had shit like unarmed colony ships attack that sentinel. I'm actually going to have to swap it out soon because its fuel is getting low (it costs fuel to fire a weapon). And yet, despite the massive cloud of wreckage and dead aliens in the space around that warp gate, that empire's attitude is still reported as "warm" to me, and last turn they proposed a trade agreement. I have automatic diplomacy turned on (an AI handles your inter empire actions), I guess my politicians are just really good at buttering them up as I wreck their shit anyway.

I don't think any game has ever bothered me about its lack of autosaves more than Deus Ex, which explicitly says "Saving" before "Loading" on level transitions, without actually saving anything. My first time playing the game I got to the NCF generator before dying (blew up a TNT box that blew up an explosive barrel next to me), without having saved once. It was after that that I learned the magic of numpad+ quicksaving.

Damn. A light cruiser of a heavily oppressed NPC race that I had backed into a corner of occupying nothing but its home planet (home planets get massive defensive buffs versus colonies, due to using the entire planet surface rather than domed structures like 99% of colonies due to planet type/atmosphere mismatch, so I was waiting on better planet focused weapons being researched before wiping them out) managed to sneak a light cruiser past my blockade and wiped out a colony I had invested like 30 turns into in the same system.

Got Space Empires 4, a 4X turn based space strategy game from circa 2000, for $2.50 on Gamersgate. It's pretty cool. I chose the "Organic technology" racial characteristic, which basically makes me the zerg of the game. My signature weapon is the "Seeker Parasite", which can fire from 2-3x the normal range of most weapons every other combat turn for 3-4x damage most normal weapons. It also flies over time instead of hitting as soon as you fire it, allowing me to not only shoot from farther away, but shoot and then fly away as the attack intercepts the enemy. I just discovered a new race that was hostile, they attacked my exploring Parasite Destroyer ship (you custom design your ship based on researched modules slotted into researched ship sizes. My Parasite Destroyer model is no defense, all engines and Seeker Parasites I also have a significantly cheaper Frigate class ship that has two layers of Organic Shielding and short range acid based direct fire weapons. Before I unlocked the Parasite, I used the acid frigates to destroy an enemy colony of a hostile race that spawned one system over from my home planet. It paints a pretty vivid mental image, of alien ships chilling out in orbit out of range of planetary defenses, raining down acid). Six Destroyer and Frigate size ships sent to the slaughter, with not a single point of damage landed on my exploring ship.

That's a lot of GB. And I was massively underwhelmed by the first level.

It's not going to come by at all, but if it did, getting a fatal total dose of radiation spread out over even a year would mean you're pretty screwed, and the "flight time" of radioactive smoke coming from Japan would be two weeks or so.

You apparently see the line between "short term" and "long term" as "instant" vs "everything else".
