The PR people in charge of putting together those videos are really terrible at their jobs, based on watching eight minutes of the Oman one. Just tons and tons of pointless wandering and mediocre play. The first two and a half minutes or so were good for getting a feel of the changes to the map, everything past that was just pointless. I don't blame the player- that's pretty much how I am in Battlefield. But that's not the footage you choose to show off a game and get people to buy a product...

The symbol on the banners in the back remind me of Neverwinter Nights. Also those dragon priest masks are awesome:

Man, ghosts don't fuck around, and don't give two shits about your magic. Completely invulnerable to ice, and lightning barely did anything, and not only did it kill me before I realized, it did a special kill animation on me, and then did a spooky ghost laugh.

    Fuck ghosts.

Urgh. Just played for like an hour, fought a dragon to a tiny sliver of its health left, and then died because that health bar draining at the bottom of the screen is easy to miss when the entire rest of the screen is on fire. Lost all that progress.

The amount of shit on the UI in multiplayer is starting to annoy me, especially the chat box, which is about twice as big as it needs to be (and I have no real need to ever see it anyway, there's never anything important said by text...).

Anybody played this on PS3 and PC? Any big differences? I was thinking of getting it on PC like I have all Elder Scrolls games, but I'm not sure I can run the game with good graphics with my machine (quad core i5, GTX 260) and was thinking of getting the PS3 version.

Dude, seriously? Skyrim is barely more taxing than Oblivion. I've got a budget core 2 duo and Radeon 4670 and have the game on the High preset, minus AA and plus all the water effects, and the game never drops below 30.

If you talk to the woman in brown robes sitting in front of the big ass dead tree in Whiterun, she sends you off on a quest to get a dagger from some witches to the south. Holy shit, that was the hardest fight I've had so far in this game. There were four or five human witches, and they kept casting shields to protect themselves, but far more dangerous was this daedric witch-thing, that shot fireballs that hit like fucking mortar shells. My poor Housecarl just spent the whole fight laying there unconscious, and I would've died if I hadn't by change gotten a one handed rank up mid-fight, pushing me over the limit to reach level 9, and thus get a free heal.

Also the blacksmith in Whiterun (the cheap one by the gate) somehow found out about me robbing her house in the middle of the night (it was like the first thing I did upon arriving in town ), and sent mercenaries after me while I was dungeon crawling. When I tried to confront her about it, there wasn't any dialog options to talk about "Hey you tried to kill me, also how did you know it was me that took your shit". She didn't act differently at all, even taught me some smithery shit.

The delayed correction of HDR when you look around is annoying. It's like I'm watching the game through a cheap camcorder. Those slow corrections might be dramatic sometimes, like coming out of a dungeon, but it does it if you, say, stand in town, look under a porch, and then look out across town, and then back under the porch, and then back across town...

I never particularly rated Karkand either, I've always preferred the more open maps. BF2's demo level Gulf of Oman is pretty much a classic example of the kind of map I like, also in the Karkand expansion I believe.

Oman! That's the name of that other map in Play 4 Free I was talking about. Really liked that map. I liked climbing up the big ass crane and shooting down jets with my rocket launcher. Also camping the gas station with a helicopter hovering just behind the hill. It was really smart design, how those hills bisect the map between the beach the US team has to come up, and the rest of the map. Nobody has a real advantage in direct confrontation, while the hills also give the US a big helping hand in making a push into the three points behind the hills, by letting them get closer on foot without being ganked. However, the RU soldiers could also hide in the hills, especially among the one wall that goes alongside the road, and take pot shots at incoming tanks and jeeps.

Really great map. If that's in the BF3 expansion I might have to get it...

The trouble with videogames isn't the violence. It's that most of the characters are dicks.

Killed a tank with my repair tool today. Also got a super ultra long distance shoot down with the SAM launcher you unlock first as engineer. It was seriously like 20 seconds before the rocket landed, and the helicopter it was chasing was way, way over the horizon and out of my line of sight. I got a "disabled vehicle" bonus, and then like five seconds later, acknowledgement of the destruction and kills.

I never actually played Heavy Rain, don't have a PS3. Indigo Prophecy was a great game, though.

BF3's ending actually reminded me of MGS4. In both games, it comes down to a melee between the protagonist and antagonist, except in BF3 it's just a QTE, pressing buttons to make your guy kill the other guy, while in MGS4 the game TURNS INTO A FIGHTING GAME HOLY SHIT AWESOME.

QTEs really are just terrible. There are some things that are sort of blended in between "normal" gameplay and QTE, like Indigo Prophecy/Heavy Rain, where your buttons are associated with expected body movements/actions, so it's less "Simon Says press this random button shown on your screen" and more naturally integrated with expected player control of his avatar, and those are cool by me. Quantic Dream is basically the only company to actually think about the concept before implementing it, it seems. Any time it gets arbitrary, like "Press X to continue cutscene", or Simon Says segments to accomplish some task that could either easily be gameplay, or isn't even worth being interactive and should just be a short cutscene or not exist at all, it's just insipidly stupid and a complete waste of everyone's time.

I'm not sure what the attraction of that Karkland map is. I played it in Battlefield: Play 4 Free and it was pretty bad. The destruction looks awesome, but the layout was not fun in P4F at all. I liked the one other map that game had, with the US coming up from an aircraft carrier and the RU on a base on the back inland, and a big ass crane dominating the B area, and a gas station and trainyard being the other points to capture.

The only thing visually about this game that really bothers me at all is how the edges of water where it meets land looks kinda crappy at a distance, no smoothing to it at all, while it looks just fine close up. However, overall I think the game looks great. I especially love how the shadows that don't need up update much, like sun shadows, will blockily animate to get to the point where they need to go (I have Shadows set to low, my PC's terribad anymore... just within this single fall it went from "Perfectly alright" to "Fuck not even LA Noire on MINIMUM"), when time changes, and then sit at the point where they don't need to move again, calculate at the highest quality, and then sit static until the sun moves again. It looks great in effect.

France is a pretty good map when you aren't playing the version of it in the beta. Had fun dolphin diving around the ruins and knifing people.

e: The battlelog tells me the map was "Seine Crossing"

In my first five minutes I blind fired a rocket from 200 yards and took down a helicopter, getting enough XP to level up immediately. Hell yeah.

I can't play more than two rounds in a row, though. After the second round, on the scoreboard, when the timer ticks out and it starts to fade to the loading screen for the next map, the game goes black and doesn't return. I have to open task manager, kill BF3, and then relaunch it through Origin.

":2ah6gw5n]Hint: Use the favorite menu! The menus indeed suck, without that menu it takes you like 3 or 4 menus to select a weapon or a magic or a shield, wtf.

I was really surprised to see the favorites menu is just a small list on the side, instead of a radial menu. No options to assign equipment/spells to 1-9 keys, afaik, either.

I don't have much hope for Bethesda improving the UI, but for every game they've released since Morrowind fans have replaced their UIs with vastly improved mods, so I'm hoping for that instead.
