I finally got around to buying the full Orange Box the day before yesterday. Also, a box of tea bags and 5 pound bag of sugar.

The three center buildings (the ones with the player height marking dev textures) will have full interiors. The nearby surrounding buildings will have extremely basic bottom floors and areas that can be broken open via traps and trap spawns by the ZM. The outer edge buildings will be solid.

The humble beginnings of what will hopefully be an epic map for Zombie Master. Things left to do:
I need to darken the skybox lighting, add nodegraphs, texture and detail the surrounding buildings, make a basic 3d skybox, flesh out the three survivor stronghold buildings, add props and decorations and decals, add player and zombie spawns, traps, buildable barricades, surround the rest of the buildings with sidewalks, add signs, cars, bus stops, tables, bodies, etc. to the streets, add killing fields in the air between the first and second floors of the survivor buildings, and player clip barriers on the side streets and rooftops close to the play area, and add win logic.
I've been working a whole two hours so far!

Edit: Oh, and find some good public domain'd city textures, the ones that come with Source don't fit the look I'm wanting.

I'm on XP64 for a couple years now and save for a few games that don't run due to copy protection issues (Beyond Good & Evil to name one), I'm pretty happy. I had some sound driver issues in the past with an older Creative card, where I was pretty much forced to run beta drivers that didn't love me. I moved onto a newer card with full 64bit driver support so it's not an issue any longer but worth checking out if you got some older hardware. Plus if you're going for 4 gigs of RAM it's a must, of course.
But yeah, I've been pretty happy with it. Down with vista.
What sound card is that? Is there a way to find out which sound and video card makers and drivers are x64 compatible and x64 trustworthy? I'm building a new computer soon.

Can't break that barrier.

I wish I could play Black Plague but it always crashes for me the second room after the laser tripwire bombs early on, like 20 minutes into it. I loved the first game, especially with Red- such a shame he couldn't be a recurring character...

If Gears PC has a fully flexed out SDK and UnrealEd, then I can't imagine why not, though I'll say you'd be cutting out 99% of the intended audience with Make Something Unreal with a Gears of War

Average around .22. I made it to round seven.

There are also older versions of this "mod" that'll work on most any games. I've got the DX8 version made for Vice City in my Freedom Fighters directory- it's kinda buggy and in places way brighter than it should be, but occasionally it looks AWESOME:

And sometimes it looked AWFUL:

I like Monolith, but I feel that across time since Blood 1 their games have been progressively less and less impressive. I still dug FEAR, except for repetitive level design, and Project Origin seems to be at least ATTEMPTING to fix that.
I really don't like the HUD in the trailer in the OP, though. Too much form, not enough functionality. Leave those numbers in the bottom corners!
Edit: Ugh yeah, those cosole controls. It's even worse because either they're really BAD console controls, or the person playing isn't used to it anyway.

Jetsetlemming, sounds interesting. what are you heading for?
The initial inspiration was Dwarf Fortress, and it's made in standard HL2 in the Source SDK. I suppose once I've got farther along I'll try and tack on a game mode and make it a HL2 DM, CSS, or Zombie Master (or some other Source Mod) map. I've got pretty good ideas on how I could base a ZM or CSS map on a Dwarven fortress.

":3rg4qsfo]Yup, just because the shooting of the game does'nt feel as real as CoD4 or whatever, doesn't mean it's the worst... This game has lot's of flaws, yeah, i'm the first one to admit it, but in terms of atmosphere and RPG elements, it just rocks, you definitely need to play the whole thing to understand it tho, otherwise you'll ended up like the gametrailers review, you can obviously tell they only played 1/4 of the game when doing that damn video review.

I wouldn't trust Gametrailers for much regarding PC games... I mean, when it takes "well over a week" upgrading their singular "rig", and even then couldn't run Crysis, that should be a big warning right out the gate.

Dx10 effects will be avaible for XP users as well so no worries about that. You won't find anything new in the leak btw, it's just what you could see on E3 and nothing more. (1+ year old)
Good to hear.
The E3 2007 stuff was REALLY impressive, though.
Some of the new footage, like the DX10 rain effects, have been moreso, but the demo content is still jaw dropping. Especially the dynamic volumetric lighting, good lord. It's a shame I don't have my new hardware yet.

I found using Vista to be extremely annoying, with shit like UAC and hidden and locked away features (idiot-proofing) to be greatly annoying when I used it. You can turn off UAC though and strip a lot of the crap out of it, so really the decision should probably come down to Do you want DX10 and are you willing to lose compatibility for some rare games and programs (the most significant one I can think of that won't run in Vista is Survival Crisis Z).
-
What's wrong with the leaked demo link? I was under the impression that it was "intentionally" leaked.
STALKER: Clear Sky is my number 1 game I'm looking forward to. It'll also be the reason I upgrade to Vista, unless ways to use the DX10 features in XP show up, then I'll be able to hold off till Alan Wake.

Low resolution? No AA/AF? JPG compression? FRAPS screenshot algorithm? Take your pick.

This an experimental map to see what I can do with very, very large scale outdoor scenery in Source. The skybox is about 1/4 the size of the entire Hammer grid, multiplied x16 by the engine, making it several miles across. Here's a pic in editor of the skybox:
[Blocked Image: http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/5153/dfmap3ja2.jpg]
I originally terrain mapped the entire grid, then after testing it ingame deleted the parts of the grid that weren't visible to the player, and pulled back the water brush. The empty spot in the middle is where the actual play area fits in.
The only real problem I've had with this is texture alignment where the skybox touches the play area. I have to make the play area much bigger than I really need, scale textures, and distort the border with props and decorations to disguise it.
I've yet to add anything to actually do in it yet, though. The "play area" is just a rectangular opening in the hills.
(it also looks less impressive than it might be capable of because I'm running in DX8 mode by necessity (Stupid Radeon 9250, not having SM2 support...) and compiled the map with rad in fast mode)

Make small displacements over the patches of grass along the streets, and make them very lightly rounded on the edges. The less uniform flat surfaces, the better. Plus, you can add dirt patches and stuff like that too them.
I'll second the suggestion to add some cars or other objects in the streets. Perhaps a dumpster, a building that was burnt out and is barricaded up, mail boxes, a moving truck, a crashed car? Try to make the individual buildings have something individual about them, at least some of them.
I would recommend moving the time the map is set to maybe late sunset or early sunrise, and add porch and street lights to make the buildings look more visually interesting, too.

I don't have a console that could play it, I can't afford one. My only consoles are a PS2 (that I never use), a GBA, and older stuff like a Genesis and NES.

My excitement for GTA4 has plummeted since its release from all the news of people playing it, especially how it skews so badly with what all the reviewers said about it. It doesn't sound like a remotely 10/10 game. Maybe 7/10 with a "Badly needs patched!" footnote.
It looks especially bad with videos like these:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm2oMcoFaGI
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/user ... 14041.html
In that first one, the cops are behaving ridiculously stupid, charging in one at a time at the player, acknowledging anybody else is there at all only in voice barks, and the dying ones animations look worse than first generation havoc ragdolls. The framerate's about 15 FPS at the most once shit starts blowing up outside, too. The second one's pretty obvious.
I've also heard a lot of complaints about how cars disappear so quickly when you look away, and mission scripting preventing you from doing what you want, exactly the opposite of what the game is supposed to be. Invincible enemies until they reach plot points, automatic mission failures, scripting oddities... Jesus.
I hope they fix the hell out of it before the PC release.
As for me, I think I'm going to play through Vice City again. I love that game.
