Congratulations to everyone involved in these mods, it's a great initiative and I thank Valve for this, never is too late. My only concern is what is going to happen with the already weak Source mod community. I mean if some mods which are already ignored will be even more ignored due the massive media attention will get those spotted mods. Time will tell.

If there's any mod that deserves attention, it's Fistful of Frags. No Guns (melee, dynamite, bow only) matches in FoF with friends is some of the best fun I've had multiplayer ever.

wrong (imho ) - recording a demo, set host-time to 30 frames per second when playing the demo, enabling sourcerecorder to save every of this 30 frames to a tga file and export the sound sepperate. when start virtual dub, set the screenshots as animation (VDub does this autmatically) add the sound and you've got a full uncompressed Highquality, lag free video you can later on compress, cut, edit to your wishes.

This takes an insane amount of hard drive space. I made a sourcerecorder video in gmod of some barrels exploding, and a minute fourty seconds of footage was over 4 GB of uncompressed 800x600 tga pictures, and .wav audio. On top of that, the video skipped because Source recorder has problems with flying around in gmod apparently.

I've had problems with Gamecam. The few times I've gotten it to actually record, it's always done something screwy with the video, for example tinting the footage of Deus Ex green/blue, and making Penumbra look sepia.

FRAPS really is by far the best. I've even recorded videos of X:com just fine with it. There is literally nothing I've ever ran into that it couldn't handle.

Again, if Johnny Iota is stealing because the games are too expensive, yes it's a protest. If he is stealing simply because he wants to get something for free, which is far more likely*, it is not a protest; it's simply theft. This is a glamorised view of what really happens.

    * It's not too hard to get supporting evidence that when piracy is not such an easy option people buy the games instead. See: Consoles.

Maybe I'm just overly optimistic but I think the pirates who can afford to buy games and pirate just because they can are the minority to the teens and students who can't afford to buy what they play but don't want to abstain and people living in areas where buying it is impossible. I know when I was younger I pirated like a motherfucker, not because I just liked pirating, but because I was dirt poor and they were available.

Then again, that's not really a protest, and there's no solution to that, unless you believe that adware company guy who says that all PC games should use the free and ad-supported model. I felt guilty about it, and would've bought games if I could (and every time I had some spending cash it typically went towards games, though now that I think about I think the lion's share of that spent money when to arcades in quarter-form! ), but it's not like I was angry at the games industry at their perfectly reasonable prices on PC.

You can't get blood from a stone. No matter what you do to try to prevent pirates, or make the games more worthy a purchase, there will always be a segment of the gamer population that downloads. Such is life. There are plenty of PC gamers willing to buy games, and who do so, and it's really not a subject that anyone should be getting pessimistic or depressed over, and abandoning the PC market or implementing absolutely retarded DRM schemes is not excusable.

I doubt Zombie Panic: Source is gonna be getting any updates, for one. It's got promise but the mod team hates work as far as I can tell, leaving it unbalanced and a bunch of maps shit to play. It's a shame, because if you get on the right map (like subway) it's AMAZINGLY fun. But the primary game mode requires the humans to actually kill off the zombies, which move faster (humans have a slightly faster base run rate but weapons slow you down, so it doesn't matter, you're always slower), take way more damage, and have 30+ pooled extra lives to respawn with. Not to mention limited ammo. If the game would even just accept zombie winning is inevitable and do something like celebrate the last remaining survivor as the winner or something, even that would be acceptable, but it's all or nothing.

Valve finally (partially) deliver their promise to host mods on steam after what? 5 years?

There have been mods available on Steam since forever. These mods are special because they get Steamworks integration, are in the Orange Box engine, and have achievements.

Maya has a student edition that's free.

But it requires XP Pro. Fucking jerkoffs at Autodesk requiring an OS nobody else bothers with at all

There isn't even any explanation as to WHY, as far as I know the only thing Pro has over Home is a different name and a few more minuscule security things!

Jenkins... noted that piracy is a contentious issue but defends it as a necessity for consumers who have no access to many materials that would have been otherwise made available to them...

He sees piracy in two ways: that it is the only way for developing markets to get access to materials and another is that it is a rebellious method for consumers against high prices of original material. To balance, this, Jenkins said that both producers and consumers would have to reach a "moral economy" where the system of belief is that transactions are fair... Jenkins believed that users, if given the proper access point for content they want, will buy original instead of resorting to piracy...

"The younger generation of executives understands the digital age more than their older counterparts. The question now is: how much influence do these younger guys have over the older guys so they could change their strategy? Once they solve that, the rest will be easier."

While I'd agree superficially with "necessity for consumers who have no access to many materials that would have been otherwise made available to them...", in that the average pirate is a teenager/college student who downloads what he can't afford to buy and people getting games they couldn't get locally/physically... "Moral economy" "System of belief that transactions are fair" and "users, if given the proper access point for content they want, will buy original instead of resorting to piracy" absolutely no way, you can't get squeeze blood from the piracy stone.

Lol you guys are so funny, cant do the easiest divide or muktiply with 10, but do it with 6 and 1.4 and 674 (or whatever ) thats all ok

We most certainly can do metric math, and smaller sizes like centimeter and millimeter are used in America for measurement and sciencey type stuff (since the smallest measurement we have normally is inches and fractions of inches). We just prefer to stick with our American measurements for the most part.

Plus re-making all our road signs, maps, books, databases, property deeds, etc. would be a nightmare to go through to change to metric, and that's ignoring getting PEOPLE to start using this new system in general!

EA's reduced the limitations on Spore to a similar level of Crysis: Warhead now; Unlimited installs across a limited number of machines. They're also going to patch the game to allow multiple accounts under one copy.

because you don't want to be a fat cripple at age 45 (at least that's what the doctor always tells me if I'm not doing enough sports ).

You don't need to run 7 km to avoid that! Just don't pig out to ridiculous extents or have a genetic predisposition to being overweight! I come from a very long line of people with overactive thyroid glands.

Edit: Seriously though I'm way underweight by American standards.

I don't do any of this. I keep myself moderately healthy by walking at a regular pace, without any conditions or goals, when I'm doing something else like getting groceries or visiting a friend. I couldn't run seven km (or even seven miles, stupid metric system!), but I can't think of a single reason why I would need or want to.

What are you actually doing? Cause I haven't EVER seen anything like that. Did have some minor stacking problems in the first version, but 1.504 fixed it.Didn't buddy say that rus port to eng 1.504 patch messed it up?

Not my pictures. Buddy was talking about the bug trying to leave the swamps and having the exits not work, I think.

Someone else claimed that is a "well known bug", that's supposedly on the agenda for the next CS patch.

Apparently the result of a bug involving psuedo-dogs spawning in the Cordon village and massacring everyone. That's the most horrific outcome of a bug I've ever seen.

Just for the record, I don't think that limiting installs is the right option, at least not a number like 3 or 5. I would do something like 10.

Limiting the number of installs to a hard limit is a bullshit thing to do no matter what the number, because as some people online have rightly described it, that's just renting the game then- you can use it for X amount of times and then no longer. I don't have a problem with Warhead's version of unlimited installs with 5 machines it can be installed on, but a single set limit of max installs ala Spore and Clear Sky is ridiculous.

Also the rules outlined in an EULA are not legally binding. The publisher can't sue you or get you arrested for breaking them- simply break the "contract" under which you bought the game, for example by banning you for something like WoW, or Valve VAC banning someone. For a single player game cracking it would circumvent any only checks anyway.

Excessive DRM is a bad thing no matter how you slice it. Even for customers you convince to buy the game but crack it once they buy it it can lead to issues with bugs and crash issues introduced from the crack being blamed on the game- and nobody's going to believe you if you say "Those people crashing, they're PIRATES! The legit game works fine, honest!". This has happened for Ubisoft, and I believe a few other developers. Ubi actually claimed they intentionally introduced instability when the DRM is circumvented, which is one of the dumbest things ever.

    Edit for source:

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/6195570.html

    Quote

In addition to lost sales as a direct result of piracy, the publisher also claimed its reputation was hurt by the leak as well. Ubisoft says that it included a bug in the prerelease Assassin's Creed for security reasons that would cause the game to crash partway through. The bug was supposedly removed from the retail edition, but a mix of negative reviews of the leaked, bug-equipped pirated version of the game and legitimate reviews of the retail edition created customer confusion and caused "irreparable harm" to its reputation, Ubisoft said.

Anyone know if the Steam version of Warhead comes without the DRM? I'd assume so, but just want to be sure. If it does I'll get that version.

Doubt it. I just found out that Clear Sky has a limited 5 activations too, retail and DD. And Clear Sky doesn't even remove the CD check like the EA games do!

"This gives you the opportunity to install the game as many times as you want on five different machines."

Does this mean you can get an activation back by uninstalling?

    Yep, further down:

    Quote

This system allows you to authenticate your game on five computers with the purchase of one disc – you can install your copy on each machine as many times as you want. If you go over five machines, EA Customer Service is on hand to supply any additional authorizations that are warranted.

So yeah. I'm cool with this. In Spore you get 5 installations, period, and after that the game's worthless.
