The main thing why no 'pro' artist ever contributes to FOSS game projects is that their holy art will be MODIFIED!!! and BUTCHERED!!! and DAMAGING TO THEIR EGO!!! Plus they can't really make their portfolio level artwork then release it to some game because it'll totally be derived from.

Actually, it's more likely because FOSS games don't pay, and it seems like every single artist wants to get paid for their art even on indie/freeware projects. What the hell happened to actually making art for a project just for fun?

The open source project I'm part of (Hero of Allacrost) has had some pretty good success thus far. Thankfully our artists are pretty good, and our lead artist isn't fond of those that asked to get paid for their art.

As for audience, the game is designed to run on Windows, Linux and OSX, and due to the small number of games for Linux, we have a lot of support from the Linux community.

TBH, asking if that would count as an activation was a rather retarded question. It's a new account, so it's treated as a separate activation -- makes perfect sense to me. I might have snapped at this guy too for asking something incredibly stupid, but then again, the tech guy should have exhibited professionalism in the face of idiocy.

I have 3 words about Dallas- HOT. AS. FUCK.

Yeah, but so are the ladies. Or so I've heard. Maybe someone from Gearbox can confirm?

Its very hot in Raleigh, NC at the moment, i think it hit 100 today.

Yeah, I lived in Atlanta up until last month. Hot and humid as well. I'm glad I'm out in San Diego now -- no humidity, and we're cruisin' at 75 degrees every day.

  • Why Google Maps is Only For Satellite Photos of Sunbathers

Yeah, Google Maps has been wrong before for me. I put in an address for a place just north of Atlanta, and it told me that it was south of where I was, right next to 285 (the highway that goes in a circle around Atlanta). In reality, it was in the completely opposite direction, about 10 minutes north form where I started.

Since then I've reconfirmed everything Google has told me with MapQuest.

They really need to get some investors and a publisher though

They already have a publisher. They just won't say who it is.

But I agree, it's gonna be hard to put together a game this massive and the technology at the same time with only 20 people. Everyone start applying!

I was wondering when they'd let you roll while prone. Looks like they finally got around to that.

I especially liked the part where Snake shot the guys up on the roof and then they just dove off the edge. Just like real life!

Otherwise, it looks like loads of fun.

It's looking pretty slick to me .

At the top, you might want to swap out the site URL for your name since this is your personal portfolio. Your name should be very prominent.

Since a lot of people will probably have a pop-up blocker of some kind, you might want to just display clicked images normally. People may want to open your images in separate tabs, and if they try to look at all your images at once they'll get frustrated with a cluttered screen.

I like the layout. It's simple and it gets the job done.

For the homepage, since you have three main images greeting the viewer, I think you should select 3 very different/diverse images to show them. Like one that's futuristic interior, a fantasy exterior, and maybe a post-apocalyptic one. Assuming you have these kinds of images of course.

In the portfolio page, group together screenshots from the same level and provide a caption describing the level itself (possibly what game it was for) as well as what parts of it were your work (did you do all of it? Or just architecture? Or texturing and lighting? etc.).

If the site ends up being W3C standards compliant, you may want to put that icon on your webpage. Adds an extra touch of professionalism .

You know, I've never liked the dressing nice for an interview, and thankfully I found an industry that doesn't give a shit either

    Agreed and agreed .

Even if you could do two interviews in one day, it'd be pretty draining. If they're in different cities and you have to fly from one to another, then it's not worth the risk. Suppose the flight to your second interview gets delayed or cancelled? Then you're in trouble. Besides, take advantage of the half day you have left, rent a car, and drive around the town. If you like the job but the town sucks, you won't be happy working there. You'll want to know this before you sign anything.

    1. Whats most common, the studio arranging everything for you? Or you having to buy a ticket and all yourself first, and they’ll just refund it later on?

Like zaphod said. If they expect you to pay your own way, they probably aren't worth your while. I had one company that paid for half of my plane ticket, and said they'd reimburse the other half if they hired me. Lame.

    Quote

    2. They usually pick you up at the airport or you just have to figure it out yourself how you get to their front door?

It depends. Most studios will either pay for a car rental for you, or if you'd prefer not to drive they should arrange a shuttle to take you between the airport, hotel, and the studio.

    Quote

    3. Most important question: Is it considered rude to try and combine two interviews that are in the same area in the same day? This might give the studio too little time (3 hours max) to do the interview and since they refund the costs, this can get a little hairy? Id have to ask them to split the costs, is that considered not-done?

If you can get away with it, and you have the energy for it, then I'd say go ahead and do it, just don't tell either one .

But you have to let the studio determine how long the interview will be. If you're flying in from out of town, I can pretty much guarantee you that they'll take the whole day to interview you. That's been my experience.

If they say it'll only take 2 hrs or so (for each one), then go ahead and do them on the same day. I don't see it as rude. In fact, if you tell them that you're interviewing with a competing studio, that'll get them to give you an offer much more quickly or risk losing you to the other studio.

    4. Anything else that might be important?

Try to dress at least business casual, be confident but not arrogant, and remember that they're not only testing your skills, but your personality and how well you fit in with their team.

I've done a crap load of interviews (all for programming positions though), so if you have any more specific questions you can shoot me a PM, and I'll tell you how they all went sideways .

Well, considering I know next to shit about level design, this book can only help me in my situation.

Hopefully I'll be able to give an opinion of the book from the perspective of a noob mapper.
