Mostly this show, which isn't exactly a cartoon but presented and played other cartoons. Every sunday they'd do a long episode where they parodied famous movies with those puppets. That show was awesome, no matter how french.

And Tintin of course, I believe every Thursday night they aired a re-run of one and we'd tape it on VHS to watch over the weekend. Those were the days

Good point. Considering the shitload of red lights that happened on the xbox, that would be a huge problem.

I'd assume they'd be tied to your account, not your console. So if you break your console you just log in into your account on a new one. Possibly

Read that book a couple weeks ago and am going through the series now. Love the books, will probably stay away from the movies, they rarely manage to capture what's so good about the written form.

Looks cool. Considering the movement system might it not have been better tomod Mirrors Edge? Or is ME unmoddable?

I believe it is not officially supported but people have found ways of using the unreal editor with the assets from the game to create their custom content. Last time I looked, it seemed like a pain in the butt to setup and to even manage to run your custom map, because the game was made to not allow it.

Not really a nerd. I have a couple books about architecture and read up on it occasionaly on the internet. It's one of these things that doesn't hurt to have some basic knowledge as a level designer/environment artist.

  • Should I buy Construct 2?

    • Corwin
    • April 29, 2013 at 8:25 AM

My opinion: use Unity. It's got a few add-ons (including free ones) to handle 2D workflows better, and knowing Unity in and out will certainly benefit your future more than knowing Construct 2.

That said, if you've figured out Construct 2 is EXACTLY what you need for that project, and don't mind learning it for maybe only that project, go wild!

At least that's the conclusion I reached, looking myself into 2D game prospects.

Yea that's how I was looking at it I didn't want to spend 2 - 3 weeks rebuilding a level and modeling non stop and then still not get the job. While making that video only took a couple hours.

You obviously don't want the job badly enough then!

    Thanks guys!

blackdog: I definitely want to do something with the space where the preview images are, but don't know yet if it'll be just opening the gallery when you click on it, or swapping the picture on each click, or adding some arrows on both sides to browse through pictures, etc.. Maybe all that is superfluous, I don't want to add too much clutter in general, but want to try to have all the meaningful content on this single page and as clear and easy to access as possible. I guess just have to filter what's meaningful and what's not!

    Thanks for the feedback

I grew tired of the old design of my portfolio so I worked a bit on a new one in my lunch breaks:

    http://www.clement-melendez.com

I need to redo all the descriptions and text in general, as well as take better screenshots of all my projects, and I also plan on showing a bit more behind-the-scenes stuff here and there (2D layouts etc.)

The goal is to try and fit everything on one page and still have it clean and readable

Let me know what you think so far!

I think the weird part is that it doesn't show Elizabeth on it: following his logic, if Bioshock one seemed to be about a robot and a little girl, this one would be about a random action hero and a gun... which doesn't seem that much better in my mind.

But whatever, I buy stuff on Steam and covers don't affect my enjoyment of games

I started doing the analysis of random levels from games and abandonned it after a couple because the result didn't seem like it would benefit anyone but me, and writing it with pics and all that made sense proved way longer than analysing it

If those are well done, and you've done a few different ones, I think it could be a small plus on a portfolio, although obviously actual levels is going to be much more important. Basically, if I was hesitating between 2 designers and one had well-thought-out level analysis as well, it might make a difference, but that's it.

I don't really know about the game concept doc, those files are usually walls of text and hardly convey the actual vision of the game, so I would be tempted to overlook it in your portfolio and get to something that I can appreciate in a minute.

My advice is: do your level analysis, and if it helps put your thoughts straight, why not, write something down. But the actual benefit you'll get from it is not by putting it on your portfolio, but by being able to respond to interview questions much more in depth, thanks to the knowledge gained by looking closer at those levels/games. That's how you can usually tell at an interview the difference between someone that manages to do decent levels by trial and error but doesn't really know what or why he's doing, and someone who actually understands the mechanics at play and that you're confident knows the ins and outs of his craft well.

Haha, yeah, the worst thing is when they finally announced me that they had made the request for a promotion, they had to ruin it by saying "it's because we have this general rule that people shouldn't stay a junior more than a year"

Way to make me feel good about all the extra effort I put in
