Ugggh. And mine. Swedish marketing types speaking Swenglish peppered with bullshit words.

    "We're number 1 at establishing near-shore beachheads!"

Doesn't that mean you're shit? I thought the whole point of a beachhead was to capture and secure a large area away from the shore? So what, you can barely get out of the boats or something?

"Lets do some blue sky thinking"

Yeah, I'm thinking I wish I was lying on a beach somewhere thinking about blue skies not sat in this bloody meeting.

The only time I ever used Max to make a level was for the original Ghost Recon series and it wasn't overly complicated. However, really all you were doing was defining the terrain and placing simple houses, trees, props etc and the player and NPCs just moved around it.

All the triggers, events, etc, were just zones linked together via the igor editor and you decided if a zone was square, round and you had a limited number of actions that zone triggered.

Obviously current engines are more complex but I think again it's still a case of laying out the static map geometry in Max and the cames compilers handle autogenerating LOD, collisions, etc. Usually you the place the interactive elements into the compiled map "base" via another editor or engine based creation tool.

1600 seems reasobale, although as always, the ability to use LOD for your engine helps.

"rush job" for something being show at the Austin GDC. Had a week to design, model, rig, animate, uv unwrap, texture, normal map, compile, bleh.

3400 polys (it's for Multiverse), some textures and those Normal maps you kids love so much these days.

This is what it's replacing (thank God!)

Well it really depends on what's it's being used for and the environment its in, you could shave off some polys without much, if any quality loss but I'd sad keep it as I'm sure any engine would be able to handle it.

Well as it's for DoD:S you have the benefit of LOD so you could quite quickly start swapping out lower poly versions with less detail.

6000 polys is nothing for a DoD:S map model as long as you start kicking the LOD in nice and early. Heck, the default tiger tanks is like 11,000 polys at LOD 0 and the Pak 40 I made was 8300.

OK. I've posted an updated version on my site (1.0.5.1) which should fix the bug where it crashes if you right click on a thumbnail.

You'll need to uninstall the old version before installing the update, but the installer will warn you about this.

First of I'm not angry - just frustrated. I try my best to test and capture as many bugs as I can but as a one man developer working with what little resources I have, I can't obviously test for all cases.

That said, onces my stuff is out in the field thats when bugs start to appear and naturally I'd like people to report them back to me. It a little disconcerting to hear that the word on the street is that it doesnt work and crashes and people are wary and put off using it. As I said, when people had these problems if they'd mailed me direct I could of solved them sooner.

As for the detail view problem - what OS are you using XP or Vista? The thumbnails in any view are generated by the same code in the same DLL so if you see the thumbnails in one view and not another something VERY strange is going on.

Yeah well, if people actually bother to report the crash and whats making it do it I can fix it.

The fact you said you heard "rumours" of a crash yet no-one bothers to contact me and tells me is annoying. I mean how the hell am I supposed to fix bugs I don't know about?

Anyway, as ifO told me what was he was doing that made it crash it made finding the bug easier. I've fixed it now and I'll post a fix soon.

Actually, to be totally fair, it's not all my work.

Small freelance/favour job to get some character models prepped and into Multiverse for a demo next week.

The initial model and textures was done by some students in the US and while their OK as static models, they were rather less than optimal for actually using in a game or rigging.

So I got the job of "fixing" them so that they'll actually animate and compile properly into the engine for the presentation.

Still, kinda fun working low-poly again. Takes me back to my British Airborne model days with Goldsrc

Very useful! I was watching your site closely for the Vista version Thank You for releasing this!

Glad you like it. Took a while because I had to actually figure out how to run Vista without installing it and then learn how to program for it

When trying to install the 64bit version there, i just get "gathering information", then it disappears.. Guess the problem is mostly on my end Anyways, i saw that it stated

Hmm that does sound odd. Did you run vcredist_x64.exe as administrator? It does work under Vista too. In fact VS2005 SP1 is a *requirement* to actuall write apps for Vista so it's definately that version according to MS.

I did a virgin install of Vista x64 Home edition and straight out a box the only requirement to make the extensions work were those runtimes installed.

    Quote

Anyways, in your PM to me you stated that the new version would have something embedded, but there was no extra installer poping up :/

Disregard the version in the link I sent you. It embedded part of the runtimes installer with it but it turns out that only solves the detail properties problems, not the thumbnails. Installing the runtimes package installs everything (MFC+ATL) that the VTF plug-in needs.

OK. Solved the Vista 64bit problem.

You need the VS2005 SP1 Runtimes installed for it to run. You should install them first, before installing the shell extensions but if you've installed them already, try a reboot after you install the runtimes.

Did you run the installer as admin?

Did it tell you to re-boot?

Sometimes you need to restart so that the explorer.exe process re-starts and reloads the plug-in properly.

I've built/debugged/tested it about 50 times both installing/uninstalling on Vista 64-bit Ultimate and not had a problem - yet.

If you're still having problems let me know.
