I just wish there was a 64bit Photoshop VTF plugin to make my Source tools complete!

Crap. I knew I forgot something. I did do one but forgot to release it. The VTF plug-in is a pain to keep up-to-date for Max versions 6,7,8 so I'd kind of forgotten it.

I'll try and update it over Xmas and release the VTA exporter I wrote as well.

If you want multiple layered audio tracks you can't do it in Max without a plug-in like Sound Trax. That said, if you want a simple single audio source I think you can use the Audio Controller (search for it in the User Refrerence Help index). You can assign it to a rotate/transform/scale track of a certain object (like a dummy) and even wire parameters to the sound level to make models react.

    Oh herrow.

Just a head's up to let folks now I finally finished the 3DS Max 9/2008/2009 SMD importer plug-in that I seem to of been working on forever. I made an alpha release a while ago but this is the first one-point-oh release with some bug fixes and support for importing animations.

Major plus points over the existing MaxScript importer is that it imports the model as a continuous mesh so it doesn't require re-welding and smoothing. That said, it's not able to recreate smoothing groups but uses vertex smoothing. More details on that on my website. Theres also some nice features like making orphan bones dummies and "standing up" models originally from Maya.

    Feedback/bug reports/suggestions welcome.

LinkedIn has been a pain in the arse for me. I keep getting spammed by recruiters looking for game devs or if I can refer them to any. I wouldn't mind if the jobs their pimping were even vaguely related to my skill set and I think their just scanning peoples profiles for buzz words (I keep getting asked to do Flash/Mobile games )

Getting back to skdr, I was in the "little club" and was cheering for him. As others have said, even though you didn't get the job being flow halfway across the world for an interview when you didn't even make an application has to say something about your skill. I'd sure as hell put it in my CV!

Hope you get a job somewhere local(ish) where you can get the design process experience Valve said you were lacking. Get off your ass Grin and employ him!

On a sidenote, yet another guy has left my company to go work for Grin this month, ironically he got the job I applied for.

Just a heads up for any Max folks making stuff for Source games/mods.

I've updated my SMD export plug-in to fix a bug in the batch mode and weights export and while I was at it, ported it over to Max 2009.

If you want/need it you can Download it here

  • VTF Tools - Finally, TF2/OB 7.4 support

Just a heads up. Nem and I finally got our VTF tools updated to include the 7.4 format from TF2. I know a lot of you were a bit frustrated by them not working properly before. Unfortunately Nem and I were busy with other things hence the delay.

Nem has update VTFLib, VTFEdit and the Photoshop plug-in on his site and I've updated the VTF Shell extensions on mine.

One new feature that we've added. We've utilised the new resource types to implement author metadata support. Basically within the VTF file you can now embed the authors name, contact details, texture version, the game/mod it was made for and a brief note. This might help with textures that get shared and not being able to tell who or where it came from. It's also good for mod's for tracking where their assets are coming from. You embed the info with VTFEdit and my shell extensions support it as properties so you can organise and sort by the metadata.

Anyway, enough rambling, heres the links:

    VTFLib/VTFEdit

    Photoshop VTF plug-in

    Vista/XP VTF Shell Extensions

3DS Max VTF plug-ins will be updated soon.

You dont. You define it as translucent in the VMT files with $translucent "1". The VTF is just the bitmap data for the texture, the VMT set-ups the shader and how it's meant to be rendered.

To quote from the first article:

The sites host malicious javascript that is spontaneously created and randomly named only after a visitor hits the home page. That's unlike any other mass infection most researchers have seen before. Usually, infected sites merely host pointers to attacker-controlled servers, which in turn are used to host malware with static file names. The innovative technique is much more than an academic curiosity. Because the rogue code does not exist on any server until an end user visits it, the javascript remains invisible to site administrators. The randomness also prevents most antivirus programs from detecting the javascript.

Did you put $mostlyopaque in your QC file? That usually tells the engine that you model has translucent parts and I *believe* makes the engine do what hessi describe, i.e. render the transparent parts first and then the solid parts after which should help with the z-order problems.

All I see is higher-res photo-textures with Crysis. Is that it? Is that what makes them more realistic? Still not quite in the uncanny valley yet.

I looked at the source of the page and what stood out was this line:

    Code
    <script language='Javascript' type='text/javascript' src='grbzv.js'></script>

Which is being inserted (with varying filenames) directly after the body tag. So it's obviously an injection.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say someone is getting into your site via a cpanel exploit and possibly editing you PHPBB template. Check was admin software and version your host gives you then go check the web and see if its the latest version. Chances are that its some 10th peer pyramid host who's never updated their software. The HaJ site gote hacked a while back because of a similar exploit.
