It's funny you say it's hl2dm map. I d/l'd it and opened it. One of the lines speak of wad files?

Couldn't get it to work in anything, sorry. I tried .map/.rmf formats. Essentially any .vmf should be able to be opened in .rmf as well (valve haven't changed the way the files work afaik) with missing props etc, but solids intact.

EDIT: seems like some did better than me. gj ifo!

maybe you didn't use the word proffesional, but I didn't say proffesionals should judge it either. What I was referring to was this:

    Quote

Each judge should honestly be from the community who has been here over an extended period of time, contributed to the forum in some way, and has routinely produced work that makes him worthy of judging others work.

My point was that even people with no modding experience can give off good opinions, especially when the people here are aiming at working proffesionally in the industry. Constructive criticism would give the contest entrants looks of how people outside the modding communities look at things. Hopefully those same level designers will remember what taught to them when one day making games proffesionally.

Again, this is just my opinion.

You could also make a mixed judge base; like 50% of the judges are veteran level designers (or other modders), 50% are people whose experience with modding in general is somewhat limited. It wouldn't be hard to ask some casual/hardcore gamers that play if they want to test so and so.

    Just a suggestion.

Personally I think people who take their time out to at least give the maps a try on the given server they're set on should be judges as is. Ferret, your suggestion is quite elitist.

I also believe that gameplay is the same in a given map whether or you are a skilled mapper or a newbie at it. As a mapper, your job is to "sell" your work because it looks good, and is enjoyable to play. Having people judging the contest who are "above" playing it or higher in the industry proves nothing. In the end, this contest wasn't made for the people producing games/mods/etc., it was made for the public, of whom the majority knows nothing about modding.

    My 2 cents

I'm sorry I'm just bothered about people thinking it's a good game whereas as someone said (can't remember who) just said it was a good product. Because that's what it is.

Look, if you're into games that feature mindless slaughter of people/animals/objects whatever with the possibility of a bland storyline intertwined, then by all means go for it. You're like the average slob that requires no more than such urges to be satisfied. You probably don't give a shit about background (story wise) or anything like that. You want games that offer you simplicity that you can understand and you want the game's logic to be beneath yours.

Let's look into what wow (used as an example) really offers:

-gameplay: you get to upgrade your equipment, run through various environments, level up and generally do what you can to prove yourself the strongest and the bestest of all. You will also feature in bland pvp battles much reesembling deathmatches (or other classic game modes); however you only got one life and your equipment matters.

You of course need to have the superior gear to everyone so that you can prove to others that you have been using countless hours at a game and that whatever you do skill wise in pvp has little significance because equipment dominates the game throughoutly.

-storyline: something about horde versus alliance. no main plot, but picks up from where warcraft 3 left. Used to present two different factions which are at war with each other. You have little or no influence on the story, and you don't really care about it.

-quests: Pretty much ending up in either a) fetch item from place, b) kill person in place or c) both. Nothing interesting, nothing gripping. The storyline to the quests is lame at best, but who cares anyway?

-raids: Large expeditions to dangerous areas, used for getting loot and thus better items (which are essential since you posses no skill whatsoever). These take upwards from hours to a day to complete, and there are chances you won't get any items at all.

conclusion: You end up spending countless hours on these few things, possibly alone, possibly with a guild/clan/group/raid. The only way you figure out this is fun is because of either the ingame social structure or that you keep encouraging each other. You don't care for much else as long as you get the best equipment, the greatest titles and reach the to. Now keep in mind there might be 0 to 1 of the "best" people on each server, each one having the same goals as you. With servers housing thousands of players at any given time, what are your chances?

In the meantime, there are players that focus on games where skill has more to say than equipment, but since you're too weak to join those and beat them on their level, you'd best just stay in your confined mmo world.

I never liked spider man. I dunno, I think he's too cheesy or something like that. Actually he is just rubbish as a whole. His powers are rubbish, the villains are rubbish, his whole story is pretty damn rubbish. In general, I love marvel and I love movies/comics about superheroes, punisher probably being my fav one. I just fail to see what the deal is about spiderman. Or the "fantastic" four. Same deal D:

Yeah props to Blizzard, 'a large amount' of people don't lie.

Sorry but this is wrong. Just because it has a huge player base doesn't mean it's a good game. Again, look at halo.

I guess I could go for contest jury (haven't participated in contest; though I have been on the playtests). I play HL2DM regularly and I can easily tell you what's hot and what's not. I also consider myself rather objective in my judgment.

Are the results supposed to be in tonight?

Looks alright in some places, but the glass railing thing in the first few shots doesn't look like it belongs there. You have crumbling textures on one side along with pipelines and them BAM this new improved bulletproof railing in the middle of it. I dunno, it just doesn't make sense. Also, there might be too much of a rail prop usage in the long hallway shot...

If by 6 million you meant 11.5 million to date...then yeah.

I would love to see a new Starcraft RTS rather than Starcraft MMO.

Out of that many people, how many do you think are kids and/or people you dont want to play with? I have been through 4 different mmos, some with idiots, some with normal people... but wow just takes the cake. The only reason the people playing other mmo's switch to wow, is that wow sucks up everyone else, leaving them with no one to play with.

I really hope that the new mmo's that will come out in 07-08 will take the throne away from wow. People who say that wow is a great game are the same people that think "halo" was a great game. What the fuck people, what the fuck.

As long as controle is the same.

...because all of a sudden, these programs will begin to control themselves! Maps, models and textures will be coming out on their own! Soon the machines will create their own game and publicise it for free! O what horror....

Honestly, it was something about the lifts. The only two maps we experienced really bad lag on both had lifts, and lots of them.

have you actually played these maps with other people on rick's server? i know that repeater, capricious and tyr were lagging so badly (either because of LIFTS or because of water or something like). Either way, those maps would probably get a 0 or 1 on gameplay because the lag practically made the maps unplayable.

By military base do you mean the one under navarro or the sierra army depot? I've been in the SAD and got the cybernetic robot brain, which serves as repair/science bot...

I accidentally got married at that farm with that farmer's daughter, and i've got some weird people with me generally. Have you met pariah?

Oh yeah, I also need some water chip for vault 13. That's what i remember. that was fucking annoying
