yeah that hole looks very unrealistic, but a building could have a hole like that and still not collapse. it's stabilized by corners not by faces. JP: it doesnt make sense that you would put a thin layer of wood out on a masoned house. if you use wood, then go wood all the way, if you use stone or concrete, use those instead... they don't mix like that

what you do is mostly team based, usually working with classes that complement each other. the good thing about this though, is that you dont actually have to take human players with you. it is very easy to just bring along some ai that comes along and heals/tanks/damages mobs. the newer things introduced with the nightfall expansion is full customization of these non player characters, so you'll end up having your own little squad which you can command with extreme precision.

the game is mostly pvp based, but there are also alot of places to explore, and much design to be inspired by. i did alot of exploring on my own in all the expansions, and the whole world is quite vast and features amazing landscapes. this is probably my second favorite interest in guild wars; first being, of course, pvp.

another good thing is that while you can buy the main game and just play that, is that you can also just buy any expansion and just start on that. given, you'll have a lot less skills and classes to pick from, but you dont actually need the original game to try them out.

I only really play Guild Wars, but if you're coming from wow, then Guild Wars will seem waaaaay too simple.

guild wars? simple? are you shitting me? by far, this game is one of the most mind challenging ones in pvp. finding a good build can take time, but you'll end up rocking quite a few crotches at the end. i like it as far as pvp goes, but it's not really a mmo (max level is 20), it's more like a fps in third person, and focuses alot on skill, builds, timing and teamwork. i recommend it.

if you're not into that, check out http://www.warhammeronline.com - it'll soon be out and mythic has produced one of the best mmo's out there IMO (as far as pvp goes (you actually get to use your end game character and content)), so i'll be checking it out as soon as i can get into beta (or buy it when it comes out)

any mmos not mentioned are shit (with the possible exception of neocron/matrix online, but they're dead... RIP)

PS: we're a few mapcorians that play guild wars, you'd probably get some good company if you gave it a go

why would a series get better with just a few people watching? how would it make a difference at all? it's not like it's a beta test, it's a fkn series; plot writers won't/aren't asking anything from the audience.

wow... just wow. fmpone really needs to sit the fuck down and relax a bit. the whole thing about what to do and what not to do with a mod has apparently been elevated since insurgency came out, and ins people have really started fortifying themselves to barricade away any and all critique. i discussed this a few days ago with ginger_lord: if you cannot handle criticism the way you get it handed here, then why are you even here at all? you sit and whine about your damn mod all day long every time someone says something bad about it.

here's a pointer: maybe people criticize it because it's not worth their time. i'd rather see that you would invest time in shaping the mod rather than sitting here endlessly babbeling about it; it gets you nowhere. in fact, the only ins member who has actually taken this maturely is minotaur0. suck it up, learn from your mistakes, stop whining and move along. if one of you can, why can't the rest?

i downloaded ins and expected nothing, other than "fun" (that's the reason we play games, no?). prior to release i had only heard about ins here in mapcore. needless to say, it wasn't exactly what i'd call "fun". i doubt people who hear about the mod will react in a different way. people wont generally expect too much unless you hype your mod too much; and if you do, then it's your own damn fault. dont bullshit people and people wont bullshit you.

i dont know how long ins has been in development, but there should have been some meeting along the way where the dev team sat down and asked themselves, "how is this running? is it good or bad? what does the QA say?". i have a feeling that there has been a gap between the actual leads and coders to the level designers and testers, otherwise surely one of them must have thought, "hey guys... this isn't fun anymore - let's try a different approach".

i am sure any game company would have done that in the event of the game not having a copable fun factor, because fun is, after all, what draws you to play a game; even if it does mean resketching a whole level, redoing a part of code, etc. if you read 'raising the bar' you'd see that valve did the same thing, and i am sure that many other companies wouldn't hesistate with doing the same thing.

You guys compare a game (RO) that was released years ago and has seen lots of polishing and development since then with something that isnt even a month old and still in betas. Thats pretty lame from you if you ask me.I would have expect better in a developer/modding community like mapcore.

i never tried RO so i cant compare. however you should know when doing a mod and making graphics count more than gameplay you get something like this. i'd rather see a mod with good gameplay come out with maybe 2 maps in beta, and excellent gameplay, then build on that for later betas. ins did 8-10 good looking maps, and it seems that in the process they forgot that this needs to be fun and not just a showcase. i do not doubt that this mod is excellent portfolio work, but it just doesnt cut it as far as gameplay goes.

Sentura, how can you say that first hand impressions matter the most after playing cave story

i found cave story very appealing even though it is made the oldskool way. i love games like jetpack and i dont really mind exchanging favorable gameplay for graphics. in the instance of games like god of war, you'll get both awesome graphics and awesome gameplay, so for me that's like getting 2 for 1's price.

admittedly though, i do tend to take a different approach when it comes to rpgs. usually customization sucks me in alot there, and i love having options like that. in the event of boring gameplay you can always step back and just admire how awesome your character looks for some time before going back to whatever it was you were doing at the given point.

i rarely seem to find games that dont directly appeal to me (save sports games), but lately i've found a few which didn't just do it for me, one being ins (because of the realism), the other being killzone (sloppy controls made me want to kill my console).

    Quote

First impressions count but if you 'give up' after a short time because you keep getting killed then it really wasn't the game for you in the first place.

this was my point exactly, although there are some games that step beyond that point (like, for instance, beyond good and evil) and end up actually being kickass. for me it depends on various effects that come to mind once i play a given game.

what i said about rather playing full spectrum warrior than this is because i feel insurgency is the first step towards "over-realism" in that way that games are becoming too realistic even for a real life standard. full spectrum warrior offers basically the same gameplay, but you get full control over a number of people rather than just prancing about getting shot every time you spawn. even battlefield 2142 does it better. those 2 other games mentioned aren't about killing as much as possible either, it is about survival - but in either a less over realistic way and definitely a more fun way. when i played ins i felt it like doing a chore, and honestly, i dont want to feel that way with any game.

read it, dont read it, make of it what you want, but that is my opinion. also, take into consideration that i am writing this at 5 am, so i apologize for any lack in cohension in what i wrote.

This seems to be the public opinion at first... but then they play it just a little more

first hand impressions matter the most. ins put me off after playing for approximately 20 mins. i dont have the patience to sit through it because honestly, it's just not worth it. i'd take full spectrum warrior or any other such game over insurgency any day. they at least made their part to make it fun, and not just a show off gallery.
